Description

With the fall of France, Great Britain stands alone against superior German forces. The Battle of Britain rages in the skies overhead and, with daily air- raids, the threat of invasion and defeat is palpable. For some of Great Paxford's women, the war throws off peacetime limitations, allowing them to flourish in unexpected ways. Some must deal with tremendous loss; some find searing moments of joy; while others tread difficult paths towards happiness amid the chaos and uncertainty enveloping the nation. As Britain finds itself increasingly beleaguered, relationships, friendships, and loyalties within the Great Paxford community will be tested as never before.

  • Just as Lovely and Charming, w/ a Cliffhanger that Won't be Resolved
Once in a great while, a show comes along that charms and warms my heart, making the TV watching experience a vibrant, lovely, and heart-warming one. Home Fires is that and I discovered it in the Summer of 2016. Within 10 minutes of watching the first episode of season 1, I fell in love with the characters and their English countryside, immediately knowing I had discovered a gem of a show. Upon finishing season 1, I eagerly waited a year until Amazon made this second season available on Prime Video. Revisiting the ladies of Great Paxford this second season, I was charmed all over again. I adore this show very much and was utterly gutted to hear that the British powers-that-be, decided not to renew it for any further seasons beyond season 2. This is a disappointment because I've come to love the stories of the ladies and the countryside so much. With a surprise return of a WI troublemaker, all the ladies are back, still just as flawed but charming as they were in season 1. A couple more husbands have gone off to fight in the war. As the wives grapple with the thought of if they'll ever see their loves again, a trove of handsome, strapping, and brave men from various divisions of domestic and international armies, come to Great Paxford to help with the war effort on the home front. In season 2, each woman has grown up a bit more. Individually and collectively, they are stronger, bolder, and more audacious, all while still having grace and poise, without much more than two strands of hair out of place in their neatly coiffed heads. As we saw in season 1, the women display courage at a time of raging war - a war they have no control over. Tensions and disagreements arise, but this time around, they are tensions from external forces that not only threatens their well-being and livelihood, but also the foundation of what some of them once knew. With aplomb and hardened nerve, the women tackle many things that both literally and figuratively fall into their homes and their countryside. I am being intentionally vague in not naming which woman goes through what this season, so as not to give away any spoilers. Each new discovery and revelation seen on screen is so much more fulfilling and worthwhile when seen without foreknowledge. It was also wonderful to see that everything that I loved about season 1, was duplicated in season 2. The charming storytelling, the convincing acting, the breathtaking cinematography, and the lovely soundtrack. One scene in the fifth episode comes to mind, where all the women and the townsfolk join in on a farm to harvest corn. In poetic slow-motion, the camera pans and zooms, revealing faces and hands that are determinedly focused on the task of helping out a friend and fellow WI member. This scene is enveloped by provincial charm and told while sweet, melodic voices vocalize in the background, as if the heavens had opened up, releasing angels onto the Great Paxford countryside. As with a handful other scenes, I teared up while watching this one in particular. Without a third season in the horizon, I am saddened that I won't find out if the hearts of several of the women will heal; if one woman will forgive and embrace the joys of surprised motherhood; if one woman, after finding courage to make a bold decision, will see if her one chance at genuine love and happiness, has been irreparably thwarted by her rotten husband; if one woman will come to realize that marriage is not a cloak that will suddenly wash away who her heart really wants; if several of the women will find redemption and peace in the internal and external battles that they are fighting. I am beside myself knowing that I and many others who adore this show, will not get to see any of these resolutions on screen. Particularly since the season ends on such a good cliffhanger. Grrrr. Offering some consolation, I have read that the creator and writer of the series, Simon Block, will be publishing the show in book form, picking up the stories of the women where season 2's cliffhanger leaves off. Being that it will be a a British publication, it is not slated to be released until Summer of 2018 in the US. Nonetheless, I plan to purchase a copy in order to see where the ladies and the rest of the townsfolk of Great Paxford are headed. Until then, I will re-watch seasons 1 and 2 with great delight.. ... show more

  • Missing the entire movie
Ok PBS.......what do you think the reaction would have been if Dowton Abbey stopped, without warning, at the end of seaspn Five. Why must I be forced to read reviews to find out that this is what you did to Home Fires. Without any warning, you just decided not to continue a wonderful series and left the viewer totally hanging. That is why I am sending back both season 1 and 2. ... show more

  • WOW!!!! EXCELLENT!!!! A++++
Oh....my....word! Why is there no season 3?!!!!! I can't believe they didn't continue this series! I've watched tons and tons of TV shows now on Amazon prime, mostly PBS and BBC crime dramas and period dramas and this one is in my top 10! The characters and their families are well developed. You fall in love with each one of them. And it's so family friendly in the way that it's not bloody, gory, or revealing too much skin. I mean, there's the lesbian theme, sure. But the rest of it, wow! I have gotten a bit tired of the WWII era dramas because the BBC really focuses on it a lot but this show really unpacks a ton of the aspects and angles by developing all the characters instead of just a few. And there's a lot of forgiveness and reconciliation between the characters as well, instead of holding grudges between the women. And the plot twists, wow! I usually can predict those. Not with this show! Wow! Man, I was so looking forward to a season 3! Ugh! ... show more

  • Best series in a long time
I have viewed seasons 1 and 2 and can't wait to see season 3. Great winter viewing. This could be a depressing topic, but it is done in such a way that you get the horrors of WW2 but you also see the human positive things that women can accomplish in very trying times. It is actually funny and heartwarming. ... show more

  • CLIFFHANGER
THIS HAS A CLIFFHANGER ENDING!!! This is an epic great series and my 3 stars are for the acting, scenes, sets, etc. which should be a five, but it ends on a COMPLETE CLIFFHANGER, as the series was canceled and not allowed to wrap up. I'm one who hates un endings, so this was a hard NO for me. Had I known the cliffhanger ending, I wouldn't have started watching it. Some wonderful actresses, too, and well done. The plots are engaging, there's action, drama, romance, and funny scenes. Very true to the war times, down to the smallest details. A true shame it was canceled, as this series had the potential to become as big as Call the Midwife or Broadchurch. ... show more

  • Home Fires Review
I love period movies and tv shows, especially British shows. I was a bit concerned about the WW2 era element of the show. I detest most war movies after the turn of the 20th century. (with a few reservations: Pearl Harbor, Inglorious Bastards(I just absolutely love). However, I do like to give any film a bit of my time to capture my attention. So I was reserved with Home Fires, but it was the women of this production that captured me within the first two episodes. I was especially impressed with the cast in this show because I did not recognize most of them, except for Samantha Bond. So despite the war element, which gratfully, was not the main focus of the storylines but captured my interest of a modern view of a small English village. I'm not a history buff, though I am deep into genealogy and the lifestyles my ancestors lived, Home Fires captured that imagination. I was well pleased to see that Home Fires came back for a second season, was even excited for Mrs. Simms(character) played by Claire Rushbrooke.(and that's all I will say about this character). I love most of the shows put out by PBS, I purchased a subscription to Masterpiece Theater to satisfy my passion for 'good' historical movies and tv shows. (loved The Crimson Field also) ... show more
