  • LED bulbs don't work well with factory housings
Model: H13/9008
The lights do what they're supposed to do. They're easy to install and simply work. I can't fault them for that. But, putting LED lamps into stock housings is a bad idea. The problem is that the reflectors in light housings are designed for a very specific location of the light source (where the filament is placed), and any deviation of that location throws off the entire projection of light. If the LEDs were placed in EXACTLY the location that the filament would otherwise be placed, the projection would be more-or-less similar. But this simply isn't the case with any LED lights I've found. They're all placed differently and as a result, the function of the stock housing goes out the window. I tried these in a 2012 Jeep Wrangler and immediately took them out because they were actually worse than the stock lights. Brighter, sure; but the low-beams would blind other drivers, and switching on the high-beams gained almost no extra distance because the light source was placed incorrectly. The difference between low-beams and high-beams was comically small. If I aimed the low-beams such that I wasn't blinding other drivers, the brights would only add probably 5' of extra illumination. It was truly that bad. For those of you who have projector headlamps, the same applies (even if to a slightly lesser degree). A couple years ago I tried some LED lamps in my Chrysler 200 which uses HIR bulbs in a bifunction projector. I took those out almost immediately too, because the light pattern was too erratic and looked junky. They also didn't project down the road as far as the factory HIRs (because the lighting was so scattered and unfocused). Additionally, the foreground became too bright, and a dim foreground is essential for distance vision (where it really matters). That's something a lot of people seem to forget. It's also a big reason why I'm giving up on retrofitting LED lights to vehicles that weren't designed to accommodate them. I see much, much better with the HIRs on my Chrysler and Jeep than I did when I tried the LED bulbs. While the xenon-look is appealing in an "I drive an expensive car" kind of way, they seriously hinder your distance vision versus otherwise-healthy HIRs. Anecdote time: I remember the #1 consumer complaint on the Chrysler 200 before I bought it was for dim low-beams. This was actually by [genius] design. The low-beam projector setting is intentionally dim so more light can be focused down the road when the high-beams are activated. In addition to allocating more light farther away where it's actually needed, the dimmer foreground also means that your eyes aren't adjusted for daylight. With a dim foreground, your pupils are dilated more and better able to take in the light from further ahead (this, I suspect, is why virtually every vehicle turns off the foglights automatically when you enable the high-beams). I can attest to how well it works--I drive a wide variety of vehicles and I see virtually just as well at night with the "lowly" HIRs in my 200 than I do with any of the HID vehicles I've driven. The foreground may not be spotlight-bright, but I'm not counting pebbles on the road when I'm driving--I'm watching for deer/pedestrians/obstructions a quarter mile ahead. If your headlights really suck right now, I genuinely suggest just replacing the bulbs with new ones (HIR if you can). Incandescent bulbs lose output as they age. In the case of my Jeep, I ultimately ended up replacing the 7-year old bulbs with brand-new versions of the same bulb and it made a world of difference. And while going with those blue-tinted SilverStar or whatever brand filament headlights gives up some illumination versus the standard non-colored filament headlights, they'd still be better than poorly-fitted LED headlights. For you and other drivers. If you still want the LED/HID color temperature because it looks classy, I'd try to find light housing replacements that were designed for LEDs (good luck, though--a lot of those cheap Chinese ones will burn out quickly). ... show more

  • BRIGHT LED Fog Lights
The media could not be loaded. Full disclaimer: I was offered this set of fog lights free in exchange for a review. So I have a 2015 F150 with the factory LED headlights, however, for some reason Ford put some of the dimmest halogen fog lights I have ever seen in a pickup that has fantastic high/low beam headlights. The factory foglights are so dim they are basically useless in fog...odd concept. Anyway, I probably wouldn't have spent money to replace them, but I was offered an LED set in exchange for a detailed review. So attached are pictures of the factory halogen (9140) VS the LED replacement. While the LED light output is FANTASTIC and leagues above the halogens, I do have concerns. These LED bulbs are fan cooled, and while the packaging says they are dust/waterproof, I still question their durability. The fan blades are very open to the environment and look to be plastic and I question since I live in the country and deal with lots of gravel, dust, snow, and ice whether or not they will last. I hope I will be proven wrong and they last just fine, but this is a concern of mine. So installation went smooth, the only hitch was that I couldn't get the bulb to seat fully into the housing, but after I oiled the o ring on the bulb that seals it to the housing everything popped together nicely. The only reason this was giving issues is that the seal on the LED bulb is just a shade thicker and needed the lubrication to coax it in place. After lubricating, everything popped together beautifully. There is a small box inline on the bulb harness that I assume is the driver for the LED chip which must be tied up with supplied zip ties and/or double sided tape. Light output is without a doubt night/day better. Another bonus is that the Fog lights are nearly the same or exactly the same color output as my Factory LED headlights which is a very nice bonus. This set of bulbs was going to be $50, but since I wrote the review, they were free for me. I actually would buy them based on light output. The only thing would be the long term test, whether or not the cooling fans can hold up to the environment as the back of my foglights are exposed to my wheel wells. However, I would NOT be afraid to use this bulb in a headlight application, due to the fact that usually the back side of a headlight is usually in the engine bay, which is much cleaner than under the bumper in the wheel well like the fogs. ... show more
