  • A fun alternative to DND or likewise
Style: Mansions of Madness
A fun game for those who enjoy storytelling and high risk/reward. The game can be played solo as well with the player taking controller of two characters. The game rules are a little tough to learn the first go around but using the app and reference guide helps you get the rest down pretty quick. Offers a couple different scenarios that are pretty consistent with each playthrough but the adventure lets you explore different ways to explore and handle any threats. I would recommend for anyone who does love the math/dice portions of DND or someone who dislikes the roleplay of DND, as the dice rolls are an extremely simplified and the story is told to you, you just have to help it unfold successfully. • This review is for newbies.
Style: Mansions of Madness
This game gets really great reviews, even for families with teens so I took the bait. My wife and I played with our 13 and 11 year old daughters last night. I will give you information that I would have found useful prior to my purchase of this game. We like to play popular games like Pandemic, and less popular but still fun like Stone Age. This game is a step up in complexity of rules for us. We played the introduction game and it started real slow. Half of the blame is our learning curve. My heart sank as our daughters seemed really bored. I had the app running full screen on our lap top with the music playing. My wife was also not enthralled but was really being a great cheerleader. The pace of the game picks up and the game has a pretty steep learning curve so we adapted to the pattern of what to do and when to do it. I had read that you need to get to the objective and not go on a scavenger hunt. My wife loves treasure hunts so we explored everything. I just let it flow knowing we were probably doomed but we would go down with lots of cool stuff in our satchel. With the universe crashing down near the end, my wife was trying to keep our girls engaged. she wanted to see the end. The girls perked up a lot. The game took some unexpected turns. You could tell that the app was changing up and also trying to force us to the showdown. This morning, the girls wanted a bit of a replay on how it all went down and were talking about it. We had to take some pauses in the game (two totaling about 45 minutes), which worked flawlessly, but that first intro game still took us 4 hours (including paused time). Maybe we are challenged. Those are the facts, now here are some of my opinions. Ignore the carping about poor quality of the figures. They are not museum pieces, but they are fine and definitely get the idea across as to what you are dealing with. They are worthy of painting if you are a modeler. The app was great. It was almost like a real dungeon master (I used to play D&D some 35 years ago). I think that it was adapting to our play style, changing things for us, and guiding us to the grand finale. Even if it wasn't, isn't it great that it felt like a real person was monitoring our game and adapting the game to us instead of vice-versa? The game has a great mix of mystery, treasure hunt, puzzles, and battles. We all want to play that first scenario again and I predict that it will go by in about half the time. I give the game 7/10 so far, but that rating seemed to be rising fast for all of us as the game mechanics became more second nature. The set up phase had us all at 10/10, before it started to drag. I will plan to update this after a few more tries. The instruction booklets are great and I was able to answer most of about 20 questions within one minute. Some relatively detailed nuances required maybe two minutes to find. No unanswered questions so far. Regarding expansions, we started with Recurring Nightmares and Suppressed Memories figure and tile sets. The investigator figures were the biggest hit from them so far. We liked the 16 new possible investigators and two of us used them. Can't comment yet on whether the additional room tiles and monsters (a LOT of them came with the sets) are worth it. My wife adds that kids should get a pep talk at the beginning of the game that the first hour is not reflective of the overall game experience. The game required a solid hour of learning for us, even with having read the instructions first. It's not like Monopoly where you get in and learn and play your first game. This game appears that it will be on our playlist longer, but it requires a training period for us. ... show more

  • Great game, deep plots and Never the same
Style: Mansions of Madness
Mansions of Madness is a very well made game and everything is as described. It has deep stories that ever change and no two games are the same. Be aware it is a Cthulhu game, and do not expect to beat it very often!

  • My favorite board game
Style: Mansions of Madness
Love love love this game. So much fun, and a complex game that’s very simple to explain. The app feature is really cool and gives an immersive experience. It’s also a game you can play solo (and keep yourself entertained for hours!). Price point is high but the board game itself is great quality, and I know I’ll play a lot so it’s worth the money. If I could give only one suggestion, I’d love to see different editions with different genres outside of Lovecraft. Don’t get me wrong, love the Lovecraft theme, but would love to try this same concept with a different setting :) ... show more

  • Fun game!

This game is awesome! It does take a little bit to explain and learn but it can provide hours of fun when played. We bought this for a friend’s birthday and they love it! I love the concept of working together as a team to play against the game. It’s great for groups! Thanks!

  • Very pricey experience
Style: Mansions of Madness
Disappointment in the Mansion If anyone knows me, you'll know I am a huge Fantasy Flight Games fanboy. Just about every game I bought with a FF logo on it, has been "hell-o-fun" and worth just about every penny I spent on it. When I first started in the Hobby Board Gaming world, I always wanted a copy of Mansions of Madness 1st Ed. But the lack of friends wanting to be DM and the "clunky" rules (some go so far as saying it had "bad rules") kept me from buying it. Almost a week before GenCon 2016 got under way, Fantasy Flight announced their unveiling of a new Mansions of Madness (2nd Ed.). When I heard there would be an app on IOS taking care of all the details and GM-ing for the players I was instantly excited. Fast forward to my birthday... I scrapped the money together to afford the high price tag of this "beast-of-a-game". When I received it in the mail, I was greatly disappointed by the quality of the figures and the bases. Many of the bases had excessive flash and the figures looked like they were rushed into production with very little care given to the detailing. When you look at Fantasy Flight's quality on minis to games like Descent and Imperial Assault, you'll find almost half the amount of minis and much less quality as well in this new game. Also the plastic is very soft and fitting them into the very large black bases is quite an effort. The figures also have a tendency to not stay in the bases. Some of the bases are so large that they cover a large portion of the beautiful room tiles which is a little annoying to me. I understand the reason for the bases including the stats of the monster, but the app could of had those stats and then FF could of included simple round small bases which didn't interfere with the board. There isn't much items to pick up or gather along the way. In other games like this, there are many items and gear you can add "buffing" your toon to help get through a scenario. I simply would of preferred... more. Also there are only 4 scenarios in the box and that is a crime. There should be double that amount of scenarios and again..... I would of preferred ... more. Also the IOS DM app.... seems to do almost too much. I often felt like it was playing me. Leading into situations or into rooms... and when I didn't it punished me. Much like linear video games such as BioShock with a maze-like quality, I felt like I could not take the lead. Now many this is a bit harsh, but it is a real feeling I get from the app. I can see how DMs can alter the game for the players, because like in most RPGs like D&D, you tailor the game to your players. "Different strokes for different folks". I am not sure how MoM2ndEd could of done this, but this thought did cross my mind. Also the app does not save longer scenarios. This glitch has many gamers frustrated, but with that said, Fantasy Flight will probably have this fixed soon. Also I have only heard one monster with a sound effect from the app. This caught me off guard and scared me a little. It also got me "bummed" that only one monster of this game had it's own sound effect. The art on the room tiles, rules and game box are stunning though. Fantasy Flight in my mind always just amazes me with such spectacular eye catching imagery. I should say that I do like the rules. Fantasy Flight has been doing rules books where there is a small booklet "how to play" leading you gently into game-play with an accompanying glossary booklet. This all works very well, but like FF XCOM app, they should of included a learn to play part inside the app which could of sped up the learning time. The stories and the puzzles are all very cool and I enjoyed the breakup of monotony of regular game play. No complaints here! I was tense and riveted to the narrative in general. I pushed my characters at all times to learn what was behind that next door... that next clue... so I could solve the mystery. Like all good mysteries and ghost stories there is a story of tragedy... or some other tale to be unveiled ...and MoM2ndEd is no different. There has been so much care in these stories that is really gives me as a player a real sense of anticipation and excitement. With all this back and forth, good and bad, frustration and elation, Mansions of Madness is a good game that left me wanting more. It's dichotomy and contradictions beacon me to come forth and play. Yes the game is much too expensive and not worth the $100, but I did have fun. I am just not sure it is worth the price tag in the end. One of my friends stated, "for the money I could of bought the three games, Eldritch Horror, Elder Signs and Arkham Horror for the price of this game and had an almost BETTER time in the Lovecraftian world". This might be an exaggeration, but it has some merit and points out the "Value" of this product. Most people that I know agree that this game is not worth $100. For many, this might be a game to borrow from a friend and play, because after the 4th scenario it's really finished. Sure the IOS App randomizes the mansions rooms, but in the end you will be facing the same monsters and base story in each scenario. Good luck and game on! ... show more
