This unit arrived with the packaging in a rather bad state and the thin back panel actually had a horizontal crack about the length of a forklift tine right in the middle of it, however I gave it 5 stars as one of the shelves lines up with the crack so it is not seen and the unit itself is VERY sturdy and looks good in my office. You definitely need to attach it to the wall with 2 "L" brackets to studs in your wall if you want to load it as heavily as I have mine, but it takes the weight of my books and I am very well pleased with this. The only 2 things I would say is the assembly instructions are pretty dire so if you haven't assembled flat pack furniture it may be a bit of a challenge and the delivery truck only had the driver and this is a 2 person lift so I don't know how it would have got delivered if I had not been at home to help. Overall very pleased with this puchase and would recommend it. ... show more

    • Attractive, sturdy bookcase
I was looking for a moderately priced bookcase -- but one that would be sturdy enough for lots of books and related materials. Most of the bookcases I found for under $200 rated their shelves for only 40-50 lbs. That is marginal for me. I also found many "commercial" ones with shelves rated more in the 150 lb range. However, they were more than $1000 plus shipping, and many had only a few adjustable shelves. I selected this one as a reasonable compromise. I believe it meets my criteria. The assembly is pretty straightforward if you take your time and follow the pictures. The instructions are sparse, but I was able to figure things out OK using the figures provided. Once assembled, it is very sturdy. The hooks that hold the shelves actually mount into the sides and also stick into a hole in the shelf itself. This makes them feel very sturdy. I just have two cautions. The veneer makes the cabinets look very good, but it is pretty thin. It scratches easily. Also, the box in which the bookcase is shipped is really not adequate to prevent minor scratches and dents from shipping. It is a large, flat box. If it was handled and stored flat, it would probably be fine. But such a box will inevitably be lifted and likely stored on edge. The packing around the edges is not sufficient to prevent incursions into the edge when it gets bumped. Mine came with several minor scratches, most of which were located where they could not be seen after assembled. I still believe this is a good buy for a sturdy, attractive bookcase. Nevertheless, look carefully for shipping damage when received, and be careful when moving it to avoid scratches in the veneer. ... show more

Originally arrived in one box, largely loose and with very paper thin plasticy sheets to protect it. No rigidity to the box itself aside from what the panels themselves will provide and you have them, again, loose in this one box. Mine arrive scuffed and requested a replacement panel, describing both over the phone and in my email which side it would be. replacement arrived a full month later, and the wrong side (also still with a gouge in it). Now I have a slab of this panel that was WAY overpacked compared to the first shipment, full supports bubble wrap double boxed and six feet of tape to lock it in, Had that been done in the first place I may have not needed a replacement but, it would seem that the protective stuff is keep in reserve to be an ass on replacements. The bookcase is great and sturdy and would look amazing without the scuffs, shipping and customer service not so much. ... show more

Not actually hardwood. That would be fine for the body, but really wanted solid wood shelves. These are not.
