Description

Close your eyes. Think “jeans.” Now open. They were 501s, right? With a classic straight leg and iconic styling, they’re literally the blueprint for every pair of jeans in existence — burned into the world’s collective cortex ever since Levi Strauss (the man himself!) invented them in 1873. To this day they’ve never gone out of style. And they never will.

  • It's Jeans. It's Levi's 501.
Special Size: Standard Size: 32W x 32L Color: The Rose
The Levi's 501 is hands down one of the most classic and affordable jeans. Every bit of my 501 tells a story: the v-shaped yoke, copper rivets, the 5-button fly, the iconic two-horse patch, and the signature arcuate stitching. Also the cut and fit are great! Mid-rise, straight-leg, and natural-indigo-dyed. No nonsense. No extreme high-rise or low-rise, no awkwardly skinny leg, no floppy sloppy wide or extra-wide, no crazy taper or flare. It's just classic. Although my dark wash pair is initially rigid with no stretch, it is comfortable to wear as it has enough room to move around, and the fabric softens up after one year's beating. Listen guys, I don't need any of the trend-chasing jean propaganda. I just need this, and this is it! ... show more

  • Oldie and goodie!
Special Size: Standard Size: 34W x 32L Color: Listless
My husband is so happy that I found these. Sale prices were great. Well-made and nothing beats that button front. They fit him just fine, just like the original model. No shrinkflation at work here.

  • The real thing...probably
Special Size: Standard Size: 32W x 34L Color: Rigid
It used to be that there was only one type of 501, and now Levi-Strauss has confused matters by introducing a variety of jeans bearing the 501 label, but not having much in common except for the button fly, as pointed out by the many reviews I read here. My memory of 501s goes back to around 1960 (still fairly recent in Levis' history); and for me, their golden age was in the mid-1970s. If memory serves me correctly, that generation of 501s was cut an inch or so lower in the waist than the pair I just received, and thus they don't completely satisfy my nostalgic wish to return to my own perception of the "classic" 501. Amazon is to be commended for providing one piece of absolutely vital information about these jeans, information that, incredibly, is missing from some on-line department-store sites, which is which 501s are shrink-to-fit and which are not. Some of the customer-reviewers have clarified the situation further, for which I am grateful. The bottom line is that if you're looking for shrink-to-fit, be sure that the name or description of the 501s explicitly states that. Another customer-reviewer suggested that to get the truly "original" 501s one should only order those designated as "rigid." I suspect, however, that most of us alive today who are looking for the 501s experience of the 60s and 70s would be happy with any of those designated "shrink-to-fit," and perhaps some of them are available in a lower-cut waist. Although I doubt that anyone reading this would be unaware, I'll just review three things about shrink-to-fit: first, it must be obvious that it is impossible to order the right size if one doesn't know whether the jeans are shrink-to-fit or not; one has to order one size larger in the waist measurement and 2-3" longer inseam if the jeans are shrink-to-fit. (I usually wear 31x31 pants and thus bought this pair of shrink-to-fits as 32x34; and after a couple of washings in hot water, they fit perfectly.) Secondly, shrink-to-fit is the best way for guys to show off their "assets," some going as far as to wash the jeans in boiling water, and (after they've cooled somewhat, but still warm) put them on wet, so that as they dry they can fit the body's contours exactly. Thirdly, many of the non-shrink-to-fit Levis on the market today are made of inferior material and bear only a passing resemblance to the classic 501s, which were always shrink-to-fit. Shame on Levi-Strauss, by the way, for diluting the value of the venerable 501 brand. I need to return to the matter of the "rigid" designation. If you read through all these reviews, you'll find some customers who were taken aback by the degree of stiffness in these pants, calling them "stiff as a board." I wouldn't go that far, but I would warn customers that they are stiffer than average and thus may not be to everyone's taste; I'm sure they soften over time, however; and the initial stiffness probably contributes to their longevity, and for many it is an indication of quality. Personally, I expect that my next order will not be for "rigid," as I have a slight preference for the softer materials. This goes to the heart of the question that we are urged to answer in our reviews: "How do you use this item?" My use is for everyday casual wear, but not for heavy work. The overall quality of these jeans fits my expectations, and I recommend them for anyone looking for traditional Levis, who doesn't want to take a chance on one of the several inferior products Levi-Strauss has released under the 501 name. ... show more

  • The Gold Rush of Denim
Special Size: Standard Size: 35W x 30L Color: The Rose
There’s a strange poetry to the way certain objects become embedded in the culture. Like a key that opens something far bigger than you expected. And if there’s one item of clothing that’s done that more than almost anything else, it’s Levi’s 501 jeans. You know them. Everyone knows them. The number itself—501—is practically a legend. A claim to something more than just denim. It’s the kind of number you’d see on an old gold-mining claim. The thing that started it all. The foundation. Levi Strauss wasn’t out there looking for gold, but in some ways, that’s exactly what he found. Because these jeans are something you don’t just wear. They’re something you inherit. They’ve lived a thousand lives before they even touch your legs. And when you put them on, you feel the weight of it. It’s like stepping into a legacy of men who built America with their hands, their sweat, their grit. And that—that—is not lost on you. The 501s have been around since the days of the Gold Rush, worn by miners and cowboys, soldiers and laborers, roughnecks and rebels. They’ve seen things. They’ve been places. They’ve survived hard labor, tough winters, long nights of uncertainty. Maybe you’ve never mined for gold or fought in a war, but when you button up those jeans, you can’t help but feel connected to those who did. There’s something elemental about them. The blue denim is like the color of a deep, unspoken sky, one that has seen everything and held its peace. But beyond the history, beyond the weight of their heritage, there’s the way they fit. The button-fly, which, let’s face it, makes you feel like you’re in a John Steinbeck novel—somewhere between The Grapes of Wrath and The Outsiders, like a kid on the cusp of something big but unsure of how it’s going to go. They’re a little bit rebellious, a little bit nostalgic, a little bit tough. You slide them on, and it’s like taking a step into that world—where the world’s a little harder, a little less forgiving, but you wear it with confidence. Sure, they’re not the most comfortable thing when you first get them, but that’s part of it. You wear them in. They get better, like an old leather jacket or a favorite pair of boots. Over time, they become a second skin. And like any good thing worth waiting for, they remind you that effort, endurance, and a little discomfort are what lead to something that feels real. The cut? It’s a classic. Straight-leg. Timeless. You could dress them up with a blazer or throw on a vintage tee, but they’ll always have that air of rebellion about them—like they’ve been through things you’ll never fully understand. They’re not fashionable—no, they transcend that. They’re iconic. They don’t need to follow trends because, honestly, they set them. It’s like having a piece of history in your closet, waiting to be worn, to be earned. If you ever felt like a character in The Outsiders—a little out of place, a little misunderstood—you’ll understand why these jeans feel like a rite of passage. Like the tough but heartfelt soul of America, handed down through the years, stitched into denim. They might not dig for gold anymore, but they’re still mining something priceless: authenticity. ... show more
