I recently bought a pair of old black 501s at a vintage store, and love them so much that I decided to buy another pair new. The two pairs are different despite identical model and size descriptions. The older ones are a lighter shade of black, with gunmetal-colored studs, a thicker feel to the fabric, a tighter fit in the glutes and thighs, and quite a bit shorter (inseam) than the new ones. The new pair are darker black with shiny copper-colored studs, and larger than the vintage pair everywhere but in the waist (even after one hot wash and hot dry.) Obviously, it could be due to years of washing and drying in a dryer for the vintage pair, but it feels like more than that, especially the texture and weight of the fabric (thicker and coarser in the vintage pair), and the vintage pair seem like they were hardly (if ever) worn by the former owner (no signs of age or use, no fraying even at the bottom edges of the cuffs, and with all the tags in place except the price.) Another reason may be that the vintage pair were made in Mexico and the new pair were made in Egypt (as stated on the inner labels.) Just sharing for those looking to renew a vintage pair with a new pair. I still like the new pair, but they do not seem exactly the same as the vintage (that I prefer.) I was satisfied with the fulfillment by Amazon and the price by Amazon/Levi's, so I'm glad I didn't do a road trip to a Levi's store, because the only one near me is not a convenient location (kinda far with lousy traffic patterns getting into South Boston.) Also, I called the Levi's store, and theirs are also made in Egypt.

I've worn 501's since the 80's. They're the best jeans ever made. These didn't disappoint. Going to be ordering a few more pairs, as my old ones are wearing out, after years of dependable use. Hard to beat the quality !

Dark blue, very nice fit. Not as trim as the 511s but I have found the 511s inconsistent from being too tight/skinny to just right. The 501s have been spot on, but you will need to get used to the button fly. Great value in this world of designer jeans and fancy denims.
