  • simple plot— sublime scenery—sweetly inspired
I enjoyed this easy read because the characters revealed their inner thoughts and fears and it made me examine my own. The Greek scenery is intoxicating!

  • Sports romance!
Let the Games Begin was my first sports romance book! To me it felt like contemporary YA romance, & not in a bad way! What I mean by that is that though the characters are adults, 23, Olivia is on a journey through her career path to her ideal job, & Zeke is at the zenith of his athletic career & experiencing the anxieties that come with not knowing for how much longer he’ll be able to keep winning races, These two plot lines therefore felt like that middle ground between ending high school & beginning adulthood. Olivia & Zeke are also dealing with coming to terms with the concessions & compromises they’ve made to get where they are as well as discovering exactly who they are when it comes to love & friendship—all themes of contemporary YA romance, & reasons why I love that genre & greatly enjoyed this book! Meanwhile, this book takes place during The 2024 Summer Olympics & features beautiful athletes in top form! Yet, my impression is that a sports romance is meant to have the sport featuring into the story of the romance, while Let the Games Begin felt more like sports was the setting rather than a plot point. This wasn’t a bad thing, just a way this book broke all of my expectations (& also, I could be wrong, because it was my first sports romance book!). I loved that the meet-cute in this book was immediately angsty & gave enemies-to-lovers vibes! The banter was absolutely on fire between Zeke & Olivia. On a deeper level, I so appreciated the gray areas that Olivia & Zeke had to navigate as Zimbabwean citizens of the UK—the complex nuances of their desires to stand up for what’s right versus surviving & ultimately succeeding in their dreams. Watching Zeke & Olivia find the middle ground that worked for them, & also serving a bit of comeuppance to those who deserved it, felt so visceral! Zeke’s storyline also features mental health awareness, acceptance, resources, & healing, & I loved that that was included during a time in our history that mental health is becoming a recognized aspect of athleticism. This was a Macmillan Audio pick & was narrated by Shaniqua Okwok, who I’d previously seen in It’s a Sin, & I absolutely loved her voice! ... show more

  • The Olympics + MC athlete + closed door!
The Olympics + MC athlete + closed door! Olivia secured an internship at the Olympic Games. Zeke is the golden boy runner for Great Britain. They clash on day one, and continue to run into each other. Read if you love... - dual perspective - insta love ish - the Olympics - closed door - MMC runner - laugh out loud moments - texts on page - meet disaster This is one of those books that while I read it quickly, I wasn't screaming "this is amazing!" Yes it's entertaining, but it could have been so much better. I loved all the insider knowledge to Olympic Village and what it's like being at the games! Especially as the Olympics just happened! I enjoyed the side characters and the added humor they brought to the story. I loved the fact it was closed door. But overall I was just underwhelmed. The book takes place over the course of less than two weeks and insta love isn't my thing. While there was *some* character depth (could have been so much better), there was hardly any solid character growth. Overall, quick read, but meh. Location: Greece Representation: Black MCs (both families originally from Zimbabwe); panic attacks Content warnings: death of a parent, past ... show more

  • Gold medal read especially for fans who love the Olympics
What a fun debut novel. I'm an Olympics fan so thought the premise of this story was quite fun and felt a little behind the scenes as we got to see Olivia work as a volunteer and Zeke compete for his gold medal in track and field. Loved the little fake press drama between Zeke and his ex- gymnast Valentina, plus both of their besties. The chemistry between Olivia and Zeke was so sweet. Super enjoyable story with a lot of heart. Oh you'll just feel like you're a part of their families rooting for them. Great audio narration as well! ... show more

  • Great coming of age story/romance
I listened to this audiobook during the Olympics, and the timing was perfect. The narrator's ability to capture multiple characters accents and emotions contributed to the story. This was a coming of age story with romance. The backdrop of the Olympics was a wonderful setting and became integral to both of the main characters' stories and growth as the grappled with identity ( both grew up in England w/immigrant parents), success and pleasing other people (especially family). Thanks to the publisher for sharing an audiobook. All opinions are my own. ... show more

  • Cute Rom-Com
I absolutely loved listening to this audiobook! (Thanks Macmillan!) Having visited Athens myself, I really enjoyed imagining the places they talked about, which made the story feel even more immersive. Olivia and Zeke were such a great pair, both ambitious and determined, with chemistry that leaped off the pages (or in this case, the speakers!). Their journey together was filled with both heart and humor, making this such a delightful read. Olivia Nkomo is a go-getter with dreams of landing a top job at the Summer Games. She’s determined to make a mark and starts by securing an internship that will put her in the heart of the action. Zeke Moyo, on the other hand, is a star athlete with his sights set on becoming the world’s fastest man. After a messy breakup, his focus is all on the finish line—until he literally collides with Olivia. What follows is a story of unexpected romance and personal growth as they both work toward their dreams. However, as the games get closer, Zeke’s past and Olivia’s internship start to stir up complications. This book is such a cute and engaging read, with a perfect blend of romance, personal ambition, and the excitement of the Olympics. The chemistry between Olivia and Zeke is electric, and the setting in Athens only adds to the charm. ... show more
