Great product! I recommend it for any parent/child in my situation. My 5-year old son previously had hockey skates that he wore for his snow plow skating lessons, but they didn't offer enough ankle support (as evidenced by his stance and maneuverability) and were hard for me to tighten, not to mention outgrowing his size 11 in a few months. The Lake Placid Monarchs are comfortable, easy and quick to get on, will not be outgrown this year, and my son loves the looks and calls them his "magical skates". He now looks forward to his lessons and to skating with his father. The skates and his new found enthusiasm have led to significant improvement in just two weeks. Regarding netative comments from other reviewers: I. Putting the Skates on -- if you have every put on ski boots, you'll figure it out in 3 seconds. However, there is a strategy to it. I recommend: 1) tighten the laces but don't tie final knot, 2) tighten velcro strap, 3) final pull and tie knot, 4) lock binding. II. Blade Sharpening -- while the blades came sharper than I expected and better than a skate rental, they should be sharpened for best results. My son noticed the difference. FYI. all new ice skates need to be sharpened when they come out of the box, whether you're buying kids skates or top-of-the line adult skates. ... show more

Got these skates for my son. We've gone skating 5 times with them and I have to say he is real happy with them. The boot is a soft shell, allowing for a lot of comfort. For recreational skating, they do well, but note these are not hockey skates. A big plus is they can be size adjusted as needed.

The overall feel of the boot is quite cheap - but it's not bad for the price; however, the sizing is off. Our son wears size 5 shoes and already needs to set these at size 7 to make them (barely) fit. I would only recommend these for smaller children, and only if you are not going to use them a lot since the boots are not great quality and probably won't be good for extensive use (they are too soft). Again, it's not bad for the price, and a good skate for smaller kids (count 2 to 3 sizes up!) who want to start trying out skating without buying expensive skates. ... show more

Although I had to exchange two of the initial orders for the larger size, my three grandsons have been skating in these ever since I gave them at Christmas. The older grandson may outgrow his pair by next winter, as her had to fully extend his skates. But the other two boys will see at least another season of skating. Well worth the price. ... show more

These were purchased for my grandson, who recently decided he wanted to learn to ice skate. I liked the idea that they would grow with him and give him time to decide if this was a sport he wanted to stay with. I bought these for my son for Christmas. They did not come sharpened. My son enjoys them otherwise and has had great fun with them and I like the option that they adjust in size as his feet grows, making them last longer for him.
