I got this mainly for slicing onions paper thin for onion burgers and it works great for that. The only problem is that some onions are a bit too wide so you have to turn them on their side partway through slicing. Have also used it for slicing cucumbers which worked well. It's made of plastic (except for the ceramic blade) so I'm not sure how well it would hold up to rough treatment. The hand guard works but doesn't hold the food all that securely so you have to be careful when using it. It also doesn't come with any kind of sleeve or cover for storing it, so you want to be careful where you put it. Note that this is just a simple slicer, it doesn't have any blades for doing French fries, matchstick cuts or crinkle cut potatoes. You just get flat slices. Overall though, it's cheap and small, good for light duty slicing. However if you plan to use the Mandoline a lot for slicing all kinds of vedge I would suggest you buy one of the larger more full featured models. ... show more

I have had this slicer for over a year and use it quite often. Onions, potatoes, garlic, carrots, cucumbers, cabbage, apples, and zucchini are just some of the things I have used this for. It's great for slicing garlic thinly for drying. Soft foods such as mushrooms are better off sliced in an egg slicer. Tough-skinned foods like green peppers take some care to slice. The guard is a real PITA to use. Be careful! This slicer can thinly slice your fingers just as easily as a clove of garlic. :>( I like the adjustable thickness and the notches to hold the slicer on the edge of a bowl. Just as sharp today as when it was new. When done with it, just put it in the dishwasher. A must-have in my kitchen. Edit 4/24/2010: I've had my slicer since 2007 and it is just as sharp today as when I received it. It has proven to be very un-flimsy. I have since ordered 3 more for friends who saw mine and wanted one just like it. Edit 8/14/2011: Mine is still going strong. Still sharp and unbroken. My internet-less friend called today and asked me to order two more for a couple of his friends. Five converts so far! Edit October 2015: I finally decided my first one it's finally worn out so I ordered a new one. I noticed one change from my original version. The height adjustment bar previously labeled .5, 1.4, 2, and 3 mm, it is now labeled 1, 2, 3, 4, but the thicknesses seem to correspond to the old thicknesses.     • Repeat Purchase after 3 years- Very Handy Kitchen Utensil

This is my second purchase. The first one lasted a little more than three years before it seemed a bit dull. I think I used it 2 the 3 times a week. I liked and used the various thickness settings of the adjustable design. I don't think I would like the fixed blade design. I'm not a kitchen gadget guy but the light-weight, easy-clean and overall simplicity makes this a goto kitchen tool. The plastic parts were all intact and functioning after 3 years. Just wish the ceramic blade was sharper or could be sharpened. Still pleased with the design, performance and value of this product. Will probably buy again in another 3 years. :-) BTW I think I maintained good blade life by storing it hanging with other kitchen stuff. To avoid chipping the ceramic blade you probably shouldn't store it tossed in a crowed drawer with other utensils. ... show more

    • An outstanding addition to your kitchen

I've had this one for several years---I'm here buying another for a friend---and this is one of those "must have" things for a kitchen. This is a great slicer which is fantastic for small and quick jobs. I just used it to shred a bunch of Brussels sprouts, for example. It's only got one blade, and there aren't a ton of thicknesses, but the advantage of this compared to my big monster slicer is that it's fast to get out, fast to use, FAST TO CLEAN, and easy to deal with. If I want to do something fancy like match stick cuts or waffle cuts or 6mm thick cuts, I have another mandoline. But 90% of the time, this little baby is there for basic slicing when I want even cuts, fast, and have a lot of slice. The blade is ceramic, and although mine is 6 years old, it seems as sharp as when I got it. It's sturdy and a good design. This probably shouldn't be your ONLY mandoline, but if you have it, you'll find that you reach for it often because it's not a pain to clean and to reassemble. I highly recommend this. ... show more
