This is, arguably the nicest 3/8 ratchet that I have ever owned. It's got the absolute smoothest rotation I've ever seen. No play in the anvil gear and, no backdrag, seriously. The direction switch is very easy to change directions with a lighter spring incorporated into it. That's usually something I don't like because it can make the switch jump while it's turning, but it hasn't been an issue with this one. It has the nicest polished chrome finish of any ratchet I've seen as well. This is a short ratchet at about 6.5- 7 inches or so. The mechanism is exposed on the back of the ratchet to give it more stability under load, and it allows you to bring on out a loose bolt by holding a finger or thumb on the back to prevent the bolt from turning back in on you when you turn it back the other way. It's not a sealed head, but it's very easy to take apart for cleaning and oil. Using grease will cause it to skip because the spring pressure is so light. But this ratchet is very strong. It has a need for Japanese tools for me. Get one.

Best ratchet ever? I prefer some other brands but this ratchet is nice. Dual 80 Snap-ons are tanks but back drag isn’t their selling point. They are the best IMO though. Koken Z back drag is the selling point. Better than any ratchet I have except for maybe a $nap-on Zero 💸 and some other Ko-ken Z ratchets. 90 tooth USA S-K’s are in that ball park too. Japanese Nepros 90 tooth 3/8” ratchets are close in light back drag as well and also very nicely finished. KTC Nepros have the same reverse positions as western ratchets unlike Ko-ken which is opposite . ———————————————— Pictures are with Snap-on dual 80 and Nepros 90 for comparison. ________________________________ Have several Ko-ken ratchets now. Didn’t need them but rave reviews made me curious enough to purchase. Very nice for ratchets in $45-$75 range. The ratchets I think are better were a lot more then what I paid for my Ko-ken ratchets. The hype about Ko-ken ratchets back drag is true. But. IMO I have better 3/8” ratchets all though maybe not as light in back drag. Ko-ken isn’t the be all end all in ratchets for me as for some reviewers. But they are very nice. Affordable without compromising overall quality. I liked the first one I bought enough that I purchased more from Amazon Japan. So 👍

Hard To Beat Japanese Quality - I'm Now A Koken Fan

I'm a home gamer shade tree mechanic, but I feel like a pro when using this Koken ratchet. It has a very smooth operation and very low back drag so it'll spin sockets in the desired direction when the fastener isn't offering much resistance, instead of annoyingly spinning in both directions, requiring the mechanic to add some friction with the off hand to prevent spinning backward on the return stroke. The direction selector tab may work the opposite of your other ratchets. That could really bug some people, and would probably bother me if I used ratchets so often that I could remember which way they rotate without checking each time. When the little lever is rotated clockwise (to the left), this Koken ratchet turns sockets counterclockwise. This ratchet was my gateway drug to Koken. I bought a couple of other Koken tools since then and plan on buying more. Not quite as addictive as Milwaukee power tools, but close. Koken makes high quality, clever, often best-in-class tools.

good low back drag rachet

mechanic. Have many different brands of rachets and my most used are snap on and matco. This does have its uses but is it as good as the tool trucks I would have to say no. Yes its slightly cheaper but lack of warranty at this price range is a hard pill to swallow. I use in situations the low back drag is beneficial but other than that it doesn't come out very often. I think it would be great for someone who just wrenches on their own vehicles but for me it is too easy to change direction and lacks the strength I need, and while it does feel good compared to cheap rachets, it doesn't have the solid feel that im used to feeling, that might be a personal preference. I dont regret buying as I said it does come in handy in certain situations. Is it the best rachet ever as others have stated? No. Is it a very nice rachet, with unique characteristics that sometimes are extremely beneficial? Yes

Very little backdrag, seemed a little rough when i first got it. Opened it up and added a drop of light oil. Now it has less backdrag then all my snapon and gearwrench ratchets

Best ratchet I have used

I have quite a few ratchets on my box, and this is the one I grab for every small job. It has a shorter handle so it’s not great for getting lots of torque but the mechanism is super smooth and the backlash is less than anything I have. Koken makes some very high quality tool and you can feel it.
