Format: King Changó

Description

In the early 90’s, David Byrne was at SOB’s to see the legendary Mexican group Café Tacuba. The opener was an unknown NYC band that went by King Changó. David came back from the show raving about an incredible, vivacious singer who climbed all over the speakers and leapt around the stage. He thought it was one of the best performances he’d ever seen and that Luaka Bop should sign them. We did. King Changó was the first Latin rock band signed to an American label, and their singer, Andrés ‘Blanquito Man’ Blanco, was indeed a force of nature. We released two King Changó albums, featuring members who went on to start playing in bands such as the Dap Kings and Antibalas. Blanquito Man unfortunately passed away in 2017 after a long battle with liver cancer. Luaka Bop is releasing these albums on vinyl for the first time as a tribute to him, and in gratitude of King Changó’s die-hard fans. 1 Don't Drop Your Pants 2 Confession 3 God Damn Killers 4 So Sweet 5 Empty Hands Are My Weapon 6 Melting Pot Intro 7 Melting Pot 8 Revolutin/Cumbia Reggae 9 African Fever 10 Pisando La Serpiente 11 Latin Ska 12 Torero

  • Latin Ska Stew
King Chango is a fine group of musicians who play their music with lots of intensity, conviction, and high energy. These guys rock the house! Lots of uptempo music that crosses over into various styles such as Ska, Reggae, Salsa, and Fokloric. The blending of styles is never confusing and flows as if they were created to be played simultaneously. The vocals by "Blanquito Man" are in English and Spanish within the same songs for a delightful effect. At other times it is only in one language, usually Spanish. This is roots music of the new immigrants, true to their roots but well versed in the new language they have adopted. The style of singing fluctuates between rag-a-muffin to pure salsa. The horn section is tight and keeps the band moving in an inspired direction. The Afro-Cuban influences are everywhere, con mucho sabor. This is party music that will leave you feeling exhilirated and ready for more. As with much of Rock en Espanol there are messages in the music. The opening track "Drop Your Pants" sings about "drug dealers and sex dealers" with explicit lyrics and suffice to say, they are against the corrupt injection of this into society. This is a song with an international theme. King Chango says they are "rich freaks with money". The songs are not always controversial but they always rock. If you like Latin Jazz and Ska this is an excellent first release for these American modern rude boys. The melting pot of styles creates a flavorful stew of Jazzy-Latin-Ska that is hot and tasty. ... show more

  • Awesome
I understand that this CD is already a couple of years old but no one can take out the fact that good music usually does not fade away so fast. I would recommend King Chango 100%. and If you like King Chango you should also check out Los Amigos Invisibles. You may not understand what they say but the beats will make it up for it. ... show more

  • Great album, great latin flavour!
Great album. Latin flavour mixed with afro-venezuelan drums and other caribean rythmes. Excellent combination: venezuelan singer: Blanquito Man, Luis Blanco, from China: Glenda Lee and many more... ska, reggae and Venezuelan roots and culture all together in a great album... their best!
