  • Awesome, portable, and don't forget about Overdrive Awesome, portable, and don't forget about Overdrive
Color: WHITE Option: Without Kindle Unlimited Offer Type: Without Lockscreen Ads
I've always been a die-hard book person. I still am. That being said, I love my first official Kindle. (I ordered another version in the past but gave it away, because books.) I'm a petite person with small hands, so the size and weight is perfect to hold. The text is very clear and easy to read, as well as adjustable if need be. I love that there's multiple fonts to choose from. This Kindle fits in my purse. Win. I read mostly at night before bed, so A+ on the built-in light. The battery life is great, but I also use a low brightness setting and always opt for "screen off" vs sleep mode. I highly recommend the Overdrive availability through many public libraries. I "checked out" my first book in years, and it's completely free. Absolutely love supporting libraries again. The only drawback, as others have mentioned, is the issue with turning pages. It sometimes goes too fast, and I completely lose my place. For the price and overall awesomeness of this Kindle though, I'll take that. UPDATE: I've discovered the pages don't fly by if you swipe rather than tap them... Highly recommend as a first Kindle. It does its job. Don't forget - it's supposed to be a book. Books don't have bells and whistles. 😉 I did purchase a case for protection though. ... show more

  • Touchy, twitchy little devil
Color: BLACK Option: Without Kindle Unlimited Offer Type: Without Lockscreen Ads
I've been an avid Kindle user for years. This, and the previous version bought a year earlier, are good. Get the job done. You can read in the sun as well as a dark room. Light weight. There are a couple issues my husband and I have had with both. 1) The touch screen is VERY touchy. 2)The settings sometimes change on their own. Issue 1 - the touchy part, swiping to change pages sometimes works, sometimes doesn't, and sometimes takes you a multitude of pages ahead leaving you to try to find where you last read. It also sometimes presents choices you really were interested in - like changing the font size of its own volition. Because of this, I liked the old version's feature of turning the page by depressing a side button much better. Issue two - I like to have the display of book location as I read. Often I find that it has shut itself off, then, of course, I have to set it again. Not a big deal, but why does it do that? BTW, it isn't happening when I swipe. I still continue to recommend. It is a great and easy way to read. Much easier and lighter than lugging a hard copy book. Get one! ... show more

  • Good, but faulty
Color: BLACK Option: Without Kindle Unlimited Offer Type: Without Lockscreen Ads
I have owned this for 1.5yrs now. I LOVE how lightweight it is, and I can actually put it in my scrubs back pocket, making for an easy exit to lunch/read/chill. Ahhhh....if this was all I need to say it would be fantastic. The issue? Because reading is so random these days, much to do in life, every time I have notice the issue that I have, I said, “I will contact them about this...” and then life moved on...and so, 1.5 years later, issue never resolves...It just randomly shuts down. Leaves the page, sometimes comes back full force, sometimes jets down to mid level gray, then goes black. I have to touch it to restart. At first I thought I was mistakenly turning it off. But, not so. I should have addressed this with Amazon, I did not, not sure if this is an ongoing issue with this model, but I cannot get it to correct. I have reset it. I have dont every thing imaginable. Also, I paid for no ads....but amazon still heavily markets in a different manner on this Kindle. No pop ups....but imagine your amazon emails on kindle platform....”you might like to read this....” etc.... I have loved every kindle ever owned. This one is not hitting all of the bells. ... show more

  • This kindle means a lot to me <3 This kindle means a lot to me <3
Color: WHITE Option: Without Kindle Unlimited Offer Type: Without Lockscreen Ads
I’ve had this kindle going on 4 years now. When I first got it, it was perfect from the get go. Easy to set up. Started reading all my books immediately. To this day it is still perfect. She has some wear and tear on her (my fault) cause I can’t even tell you how many books I have read or all the places I’ve traveled and took it with me. It stayed in my purse for a long time. Never went anywhere without it. 1000% with out a doubt this was a great purchase. If you’re thinking about getting it just go right on ahead. It’s been my comfort blanket for years. Wayyyy worth the purchase. Oh and I LOVE the paper look. The black and white. I never had a problem reading it since you can make the font a lot bigger. It has a tiny lag to it but nothing to make a deal out of. I think the little lag is endearing. Over all I’m glad I bought this. ... show more

  • Pretty Good, Just a Few Minor Flaws. Pretty Good, Just a Few Minor Flaws.
Color: WHITE Option: Without Kindle Unlimited Offer Type: Without Lockscreen Ads
I was really excited for my kindle to come in because I have had more time to read lately and I felt that a kindle would be useful in easy and cheaper access to books. (not to mention environmentally friendly. As much as I do love a good physical book.) This version of the Kindle of relatively easy to figure out, and navigate, stays charged for weeks if you put it to sleep, and is light and portable. the last part, is probably one of the best things about the Kindle. I recently bought a hard copy of Obama's memoir a Promised Land, and thinking about lugging that book around for as long as it will take me to read it, is making me wish I had bought it as an e-reader instead. I really like the feature that is built in where you can highlight a word and it gives you access to a definition, or if you are highlighting a phrase, will show you a wikipedia page with more background information. I like to read a lot of nonfiction books and historical books, so this feature has come in handy multiple times. The reason I am giving this only four stars compared to five is because I have had just a few unexpected problems, and while they are not big enough problems to make me want to never use my Kindle again, they are annoying. In the reviews that I read, people were all assuring that there was no glare seen in the screen. This was one of the big selling points to me because I have some books just on my iphone and the glare was the most frustrating part. I'm not sure if the lack of glare is when you are reading outside, but I am reading inside of an office and the glare of the fluorescents is hard to avoid. Definitely not as bad as an iPhone or even a fire tablet, but still bad enough to where I'm constantly having to move the screen around because the glare spots mess with my eyes when I'm trying to read. (the words still come through the glare, but it's hard to focus my eyes on it because of the glare. Hope this makes sense.) The only way there is no glare is if I'm holding the Kindle directly in front of my face. if I have it angled up towards my face and am holding it lower, the lights are directly hitting the screen and then reflecting off into my eyes. (I attached a picture of what the glare looks like at a comfortable -for me- reading position so you get an idea.) The second problem I've run into is that I feel like the screen is really sensitive. If your finger even accidentally touches the screen, it will flip the page. And sometimes I will swipe from the right of the screen to the left to turn the page forward, but it will register as if I am trying to turn back a page and I have a hard time seeing where it is that I am in the book now. These are the only two problems, but I have to work with these problems every day as they both pertain to the actual reading of the book which is why I have docked a star. Overall though, I would say that it's a pretty good deal. I bought the kind without the advertisements which was a little bit extra but honestly I didn't mind paying the extra amount and I would say personally that it's worth it. Advertisements just also bug me. Although I do miss reading from an actual book at times, I would not say that that was because of anything having to do with a Kindle. Maybe I am a little harsh of the Kindle because of that, or maybe I am just old fashioned. Ultimately, one of the biggest reasons that I got a kindle is because I 'm trying to reach a point of zero waste and the Kindle has helped me get one step closer to that goal. ... show more

  • Perfect size for travel
I love my kindle! It’s such a good size and is so slim it easily fits into my purse. I do tend to read more on my phone than my kindle but that has more to do with not wanting to drag my kindle everywhere with me since I read during downtime at work or in short periods if I’m running errands and waiting around. There is a lip on the edge where the case meets the screen, this doesn’t bother me but I’ve seen people mention they like the version that is flush with the screen. So if tapping on the screen with a edge will bother you I’d look into the other version. I also added a pop socket on mine and since it’s only slightly bigger than my hand and maybe twice as big as my pro max iPhone it’s pretty easy for me to hold without wanting to put it down cause it’s so light. The battery also seems to lasts so long, if I give it a full charge before a trip I haven’t had to recharge it once so far during the trip itself. The biggest downside has been getting it to sync, I’m not sure if it’s the WiFi or if it’s just delayed but my kindle app on my phone will sync to whatever page I ended on on my kindle but my kindle won’t sync to the page I was on if I most recently read on my phone. I also couldn’t get my highlights to transfer from my kindle to my phone or Goodreads and had to redo them on my phone. It will sync all of the books I added into and returned from my library since I have kindle unlimited I can only have so many titles at once. Also the downloading process is super easy and has been wonderful for plane rides and going out in public where there’s no WiFi access. ... show more

  • Hooked right up to the library – very easy
Color: BLACK Option: Without Kindle Unlimited Offer Type: Without Lockscreen Ads
My husband got this new Kindle because the old one (from 2014) no longer downloaded the library books. The library and Amazon indicated the book had been delivered, but it never showed up. So he figured a new Kindle was in order. We chose this one (2019) because it had higher ratings than the current version. And it worked immediately to hook up the library and downloaded the library book via Libby. My husband was thrilled. He said it did have a few changes from the older version. He said it was less sensitive and needed to be touched more firmly than the older model. Perhaps that’s a setting that he can look into. Also, he was used to his cover closing the Kindle. And he hadn’t yet bought a new cover. His old cover didn’t fit the new model. So we’ll have to get one for this new Kindle. All in all, he was very happy with the purchase. ... show more

  • GREAT FOR GETTING BACK INTO READING!
Color: WHITE Option: Without Kindle Unlimited Offer Type: Without Lockscreen Ads
I used to have a Kindle way back when (it had a keyboard!), but it's been a couple years since then and with shelter in place, I figured this was the time to get back into my hobby of reading. One of the huge attractions to having a Kindle is the fact that you can store many books at once onto this device while having none of the weight or bulk. In an age of digital noise, I look to this device to get back into the quiet solace and concentration that reading gives me -- kind of ironic, I know. I've made it a point to read my Kindle instead of going through social media on my phone when I have a couple of minutes to spare. I've found that the Kindle has really made the decision to reach for a book instead of my phone a lot easier -- the compact size means I can throw it into any bag, the amount of GB means I can stack the books I want to read inside my library, and the adjustable screen brightness and text size / font means I can emulate the actual reading experience seamlessly. Of course, the Kindle is no absolute substitute for a bibliophile who enjoys thumbing through the pages or flipping back and forth between their reading material, but I have personally found much enjoyment getting back into reading with this little device. I also expect that it will be incredibly convenient to have once travel opens up again, so that I may read on my commutes or on airplane rides. If you're looking for a simple e-reader that lets you read on your own preferences, I would strongly recommend this Kindle. As an aside, I would not recommend purchasing the offered Kindle Library Subscription after the one month free trial unless you're making a point of looking through the library on a monthly basis to "borrow" books (or read the Harry Potter series). I've gotten more use with buying the books I'd like to read on the Kindle instead of depending on Amazon's Library (especially since I like reading more recently acclaimed books, such as Michelle Obama's Becoming or the Dune series). The Kindle pricing for books can add up, but it's definitely cheaper and less bulkier than buying the physical book. ... show more
