Often imitated, John Boos and Co. is internationally known for its expertise in crafting American hardwoods into products of beauty, durability and function. Simple board care can ensure this heirloom, handcrafted board is a favorite in your kitchen for years to come. Every John Boos Board and Block comes with a food safe natural oil finish that helps protect the wood during transit. Once a month, apply an even coat of John Boos Mystery Oil (NSF approved, sold separately), and allow it to soak in overnight. Repeat this process more often when the board is brand new or if you live in a dry, arid climate. John Boos recommends applying John Boos Board Cream (also sold separately) to seal the top of the wood surface after applying the Mystery Oil. A few quick minutes of regular oil application will ensure your new board is properly seasoned, and ready for work! After use, wash board with warm, soapy water (all wooden cutting boards are not dishwasher safe and should not be soaked in water).. Troubleshooting : Warpage: The board needs to be Oiled at least once a month. After oiling the customer can apply the Boos Board Cream. Warpage is caused by a imbalance of moisture in the wood, be sure to oil all sides of the cutting board. Our boards are individually manufactured and oiled before packaging at the factory. note: Use the John Boos Oil or Mineral oil. Boos Board cream is to be used only with the oil. Splitting Glue line: If the board has been properly oiled and maintained the glue lines should hold indefinitely. Once in a while there might be a piece of wood that did not bond and a glue line failure can occur. Compared to the number of boards sold the amount with glue line failure is very small.

  • Quality Block - high maintenance
Size: 20"x 15" x 2.25
Very high quality block but make sure you buy the block oils and cream and work it well into the wood. This block is very high maintenance, requires oiling and conditioning at least once/month (more often when it is brand new). Avoid color liquids/substance (cherry, grape jelly, beets) as the wood takes it on and stains easily until well condititioned. ... show more

  • Do NOT purchase this real hardwood product IF you are not willing to oil it for life.
Size: 20"x 15" x 2.25
Do NOT purchase this real hardwood product IF you are not willing to oil it for life. What this means to you is: purchase a bottle of food grade mineral oil WITH this product or do not waste your money, just purchase a cheap bamboo board or something disposable. Note that without oil bamboo can crack AND absorb your foods juice (yuck). I have a cheap bamboo board which is great but I have oiled and cared for it as I have outlined below. I use Boos mystery oil first then seal with Boos board cream. I have a few Boos blocks, all of which have required ALOT of maintenance (oiling) for the first few days of purchase. After the initial 7 days (in a row) of oiling (depending on how dry your board is it might need multiple daily sessions) it's 'thirst' slows down a bit, but will still require as follows; for the first month: weekly oiling, then monthly (for a few months), then quarterly at a minimum (this is with light duty). The key is to 'tune in' to the board, it will tell you when it's thirsty. Always keep you Boos dry while not in use and do not wash it for the first month and only after oiling for a month minimum as mentioned. Drip dry for a few seconds (if your boards been properly seasoned & mantained the water will run off like a ducks back or good car wax job) then use paper towels to dry then after its completely dry reapply oil. If you follow these instructions you will have a family heirloom to be passed down for generations. ... show more

  • Good board however...
Size: 20"x 15" x 2.25
Thick heavy board is a plus. But I was disappointed to see that it is warped. When laid flat on granite surface it is NOT 100% straight. This is something that shouldn't happen at this price range. Also the individual blocks the board is made of aren't all even throughout. I have seen boards with half the price with better craftsmanship. I would only get it if you're a bit of show-off like me and want to own a Boos board. But I think for the price you should be able to get much better ones ... show more

  • Do not be fooled by the name.
Size: 20"x 15" x 2.25
I bought this because I had been looking for a good end-grain board and because "John Boos makes great boards". I place an order in December and received it shortly in the new year. I began a long process of curing the board by oiling each face _and all sides_ daily for a week with food grade mineral oil until it would accept no more, followed by a little less than a week of a food-grade wax and mineral oil mixture coating on each face _and all sides_. I'll say it again, because other people's pictures with cracks look like they ignored this bit: AND ALL SIDES. It looked pretty for 3 months, along with a bit of curing maintenance, as decoration - I'm waiting for a larger kitchen to really make use of it, but I did use it twice and both times felt great. Hand washed and dried immediately, left to fully dry standing on its side - the standard operating procedure for wooden kitchen products. Treat your wood well and it should treat you well! Fast forward to last week, and one night as I was doing my daily inspection (did I mention it's pretty?), I noticed two separate splits along glue joints and some hairline cracks in the wood block between them. After a light oiling and a few days, the splits and cracks deepened and ended up reaching fully through the board. This indicates to me one (or all) of 3 things: (1) the wood was improperly dried before being cut, glued, etc; (2) the glue-up was not properly clamped or was otherwise weakened; (3) the wood block placements are not conducive to allowing the board to expand and contract naturally - they're placed in a bunch of random orientations that would be prone to failure from natural wood movement. I contacted John Boos with photos and they sent out a replacement directly. However, after taking the replacement out of its plastic-wrap packaging, I immediately noticed splits that already began to form while still in its packaging. Again, glue is a concern. After sending photos of the new board that already began splitting, I was told that I could keep both, and since I bought this through Amazon that I should contact Amazon for any replacements or returns (it's been 3 months, so the return window already closed) and that they wouldn't be sending any more replacements out. They also told me "there is nothing wrong with the replacement board" and that the wood will start to "swell back up and those cracks will be eliminated" - both statements are not quite correct, and while wood does expand and contract, once it is split it will always be split. I really appreciate the attempt that they made to make things right. Truly, I really do, and free boards are nice, but there are details throughout this entire interaction that are concerning. The fact that a board was already beginning to split before taking it out of the plastic wrap is a more glaring issue than the fact that my original board split after 3 months. I'll end here with a few pictures. Use your best judgement before buying. Amazon probably isn't the best place to buy a wooden board with its 30 day return policy, but maybe with a good warranty. You will need to maintain it, but even with meticulous care you may (probably) still wind up with a split board. ... show more

  • One Beautiful Board!
Size: 20"x 15" x 2.25
I love Boos boards. This company is by far the best in the business when it comes to cutting boards and butcher blocks. There's really no comparison but do some reading up on it anyway. I think you will come to the same conclusion I did when I ordered my first Boos cutting board: it's spendy for sure but worth every penny. This is a product to last a lifetime (if cared for properly). Boos makes two kinds of boards, "edge" grain and "end" grain. The difference is that you see the edge of the wood, in the familiar striped pattern, on edge grain boards while you see cut ends, in a kind of checkerboard pattern on the end grain boards. Both are superior products but the end grain boards are supposed to be slightly easier on your knives because the knife actually sinks into the wood fibers when cutting. I purchased my first Boos board about a year ago and I went for the less expensive edge grain. It looks as good today as the day I bought it because I keep it well oiled. My daughter has admired this board from the beginning and when I saw this great deal on an edge grain I decided to upgrade and give her my old one. She's thrilled and I couldn't be happier. One very, very important feature is the integrated hand grips. Trust me, don't overlook it. These things are heavy, even at only 2.25" (they come in 3" too!). Without the hand grips this board would be impossible to grab, flip, wash, and generally handle. Again, this is a board to last a lifetime and is worth the expense. I don't think you'll regret it. ... show more
