  • Baseball bat neck!
I'm a beginner with BIG hands. I like Les Paul style guitars and bought a few including an expensive (in my opinion) $1,000 Epiphone Les Paul Custom Limited Edition. I wasn't looking for a double cut guitar. But this one kept popping up on Amazon. I liked the arched top and thought why not for the $133 sale price drop. The only reason I hesitated at full price was the color in the pictures looks kind of green rather than trans black. When the guitar arrived it was actually bronze! I've joined an IYV Facebook page and it seems you could get almost any color from greenish to gray or solid black. I've had several people ask to trade for my bronze one. Apparently thats the color most people want. I'm not trading it! The guitar came out of the box out of tune of course, but once tuned it was perfectly intonated and had a super low action with no fret buzz at all. I've had guitars set-up by pros that couldn't replicate this! Unfortunately that changed after a few weeks in its new climate of Florida. It's still holding tune and doesn't buzz, but the action got a bit higher. But I belive I can get back to that feel now that it's settled in, it just needs a little adjustment. The finish was near perfect. Just one small fish-eye where the neck meets the body on the bottom horn. The pickups are brighter than most humbuckers but not quite like a single coil. The pots, while dime sized, are super responsive. They work well enough to go from almost single coil brite to smooth bluesy, like you would expect from a humbucker. The fretboard was dry as a bone. A little Dunlop 65 fixed that very quickly. The tuners work well and hold tune. The nut is bone! The bridge is kind of cheap looking, but it works perfectly. Now for the best part. The neck is chunky, thick, and round. It's like a baseball bat sawn in half lenthwise. For a beginner with BIG hands, it's amazing! The fretboard is also rather flat. These two things make fretting bar chords much easier. My guitar teacher is a shredder/metal guy that insists I use my Stratocaster during lessons. He believes that low frets are easier to avoid losing tune by pressing too hard. I oblige him, but as soon as I get home to practice I grab this guitar. I'm very anxious for Amazon to get some black, white, or silver IYV Les Pauls in stock. Currently they only sell a green IYV Les Paul. I will buy one as soon as they appear. I could order one directly from IYV, but the shipping cost from Vietnam plus the possibility of damage in a flimsy cardboard box and paying return shipping are holding me back. If you like a fat neck and an almost flat fretboard, you want one of these! ... show more

  • A Truly Lovely Guitar -- and This in Every Way.
Been playing, both pro and for myself, over 60 years. Started out as a Gibson guy (and still own quite a few), but these days I am looking to IYV. The "why" of this is exemplified in this guitar. It is a total winner. The basic design, right down to the 25 inch neck scale, is PRS. But IYV added a few of their own touches -- both "practical" and esthetic. Two quick examples: The string thru body design. Staggered so as to equalize string length, downward pitch and string tension. Works and looks wonderful. And then there's the binding. Beautifully applied -- and beautiful! Maple instead of the standard (boring) celluloid. Love it! The transparent black finish is just that -- not greenish at all on my guitar. And revealing the rich flame of the maple veneered body. Totally gorgeous. The PUPS are classically voiced humbuckers. Ones that bring out the sweetness of an amp more than its grittiness. Some here speak of a thousand little flaws on their instrument -- possibly signs of it being carelessly handled before they received it. Mine didn't suffer from that at all. It is simply lovely. Set up was pretty good out of the box. Certainly good enough for a learning player. But I prefer light to heavy (9-46) strings, and those made of pure nickel rather that the more piercing sound of today more commonly used strings. Set up to compensate was quick and easy. And she holds tuning beautifully. (I did slightly tighten the tension of the "B" string tuner -- this via the adjustment screw there for that purpose.) In simple words I could not be more pleased with this guitar. And highly recommend it to anyone, be they a newbie or (like me) a long-time player. ... show more

  • PRS Clone
Have read reviews on this guitar which overall talk about how great the guitar is and many with no flaws. Over the last 3 years I have bought now a total of 8 IYV guitars including this one from Amazon. I have to be honest I do like the IYV guitars but I have yet to get one without blemishes or need to do a full set up. Not sure how I have been so unlucky but for the money if you know how to do a full set up, basic wiring, and some finish repair skills you can get these in really great playing condition. Upon arrival in its single box which the one I got had no dents or real damage I got my hopes up that I finally got a defect free IYV. Now the good: Upon inspecting the guitar the neck was straight and ever so slightly had correct relief, nut was cut almost perfectly would need minor filing and polishing. fret ends were not too bad, tuners seemed to work well and it had pretty good figure on the maple veneer cap. Pickups and electronics all worked, and sounded decent. Wiring looked fairly neat and cavity had shielding paint and aluminum foil tape on cover. Basic screws holding tuners, straps and pickups were properly tightened. Intonation was half on and half off. Now for the not so good. On the face of the guitar where the wood like binding is located, see picture, there is a definite over lay of the black top paint color bleeding into the binding, which if was on the bottom section of the guitar would be a non issue to me but its on the side you see when you play it. Also on the front of the guitar and top horn to the neck was a noticable run of the poly coat as well as on the belly cut out in 2 places and one on the bottom side. The worst blemish was near the guitar jack where there were 6 actual chips out of the poly finish you could see the base wood and some of the black color was missing. Lastly, frets tops were scratchy needing to be polished and there were about 4 high fret areas. Even though I did not need another guitar the price was good with it being around $138.00 delivered to my door I decided to keep it and spend several hours fixing the issues as I like taking a mediocre guitar and making it something you can enjoy playing. I ended up coloring the chipped areas by the jack and filled with super glue the missing poly then wet sanded and leveled/polished it. Its not a perfect repair but you can't feel the chipped areas now. The poly runs I wet sanded and polished too. I leveled the high fret areas and polished them as well as rounded the fret ends and polished them too, this took longest to do as I believe the frets to be stainless steel and not the softer nickel copper type. Lastly, after the fret work I adjusted the string height with new quality strings, and intonated the guitar. I also replaced the tone pot with a coil split and new capacitor because the pickup were 4 wire type and waxed potted. So after 4 plus hours work the guitar action is around 1.25 mm off the 12th fret and super easy to play and has additional tonal sounds with the coil splitting and sounds good enough to my ears not to switch out the pickups. Tuners work smoothly. Bottom line, even though I have yet to get a blemish free IYV guitar like some of the reviewers have said I decided to keep the guitar and make the corrections. Now after spending time and a bit of energy I have a guitar that plays and sounds definitely better than a sub $150.00 guitar would be. It holds its own against an actual PRS SE Standard I have. ... show more
