Set in a world where the lines between good and evil are are blurred, players will experience heroes and villains engaging in epic battles on a massive scale. Challenging Yet Accessible Gameplay Developed by NetherRealm Studios, under Ed Boon of Mortal Kombat fame, Injustice: Gods Among Us is developed with gamers of all skill levels in mind. The playable characters are separated into roughly two categories: power based fighters such as Superman, and gadget based fighters such as Batman. In the interactive environments of the game a power character like Superman might use his super strength to lift and throw an object such as a car at an opponent, while a gadget character like Batman might maneuver an opponent close to the same car, then blow it up with a tossable explosive. Characters like Wonder Woman Woman and Nightwing have hybrid abilities that they can toggle between. Regardless of the characters used, varied abilities makes each a possible match for the other, with their attacks broken down into heavy, medium and light varieties, and each also having a specific move that can be unleashed when the power meter that they grow throughout combat, is full. In addition, players can engage in "wager battles" in which portions of the opposing character's power can be won as a prize for victory. Taken together these mechanics promise action that is simple to pick up but challenging to master, and and which adds a distinct gameplay feel. • One of the best fighting games I've seen in a while
Platform: PlayStation 3 Edition: Standard
Injustice is a FANTASTIC game. It's one of those games that you hear about, you read about online, you see the promotional items and the publicity and the hype and you wonder if it's really going to end up being all that good once you get it home. Thankfully, Injustice is one of those rare games these days that actually does live up to all of that promotional hoopla. I should offer a disclaimer: I'm not usually a big fighting game fan. It's never been one of my favorite genres, and whenever I do get my hands on one, I'll typically play around with it for a little bit and then lose interest. But Injustice is such a well-crafted game that even casual fighting game players like me will get hooked. The centerpiece of this game is its story mode. Which is actually not the first thing one thinks of when one thinks "fighting games," right? It's a retelling of a fairly tried-and-true DC Comics storyline trope: there's a parallel universe where Superman's gone bad, and the heroes from the proper DC Universe are out to stop him. Along the way, you meet the parallel incarnations of various heroes and villains. And each time you are called upon to fight, the game's plot gives you a reason and a context for that fight to be taking place. Each character has a well-thought-out moveset, the characters themselves and the stages are all wonderfully designed. Some of the costumes are a little strange, but this is an easy thing to get over. One of the coolest features in the game is the degree to which one can interact with the environment. You can pull hovercars out of the air and toss them, fling a dumpster at your enemy, or smack them through a portal to the Phantom Zone and watch them get torn up by... Phantom Zone monsters?... before they get spat back out in another part of the stage. Each stage has a selection of doodads in the environment that you can employ (depending on which character you are, and whether or not your fighter has super strength), and most have a "transition" that connects them with a different part of the stage (e.g. the afforementioned Phantom Zone portal) through which you can smack your enemy -- if you can maneuver them to the appropriate edge of the screen. Which, of course, I always try to do. Because the transitions make me happy. All in all, this is a really entertaining game. If you're a fan of fighting games, it definitely has a lot of the stuff you like. If you're not necessarily a fighting game person, but you dig the DC Universe, this is definitely a worthwhile diversion. Even if none of the above applies to you, I'd still wager you'd not be disappointed by picking up this title. ... show more

  • When Free of Mortal Kombat's past, Netherrealm can still make a good game
Platform: PlayStation 3 Edition: Standard
So Netherrealm Studios is long known for their amazing Mortal Kombat series, however don't think they are a one trick pony. Ed Boon and the team return with Injustice: Gods Among Us and provide a really solid fighter. Continuing into the 3d models in 2d environments style fighting like the most recent Mortal Kombat entry, yet free from the shackles of the Mortal Kombat series, they can throw away their well known block button that is often a point of contention in the Fighting Game Community. Injustice sports a great story that would be right at home in the pages of DC comics and great fight mechanics that keep the fights fast paced and interesting. Knowing their audience, Netherrealm's character move lists have serious depth to them showing their want to court serious fans of fighting games and go about displaying frame data and descriptions of the moves instead of just simple motions and names. While intended for fans of serious competitive fighting games, this has a much easier path to entry than say Virtua Fighter games or even the venerable Street Fighter series. It is still just as pick up and play as your Mortal Kombats of old while still being more designed for the competitive nature than Netherrealm's previous offerings. If you like Mortal Kombat or fighting games in general you'll love Injustice. If you are looking for a great DC Universe game with a generous cast list this can whet that appetite as well. I know you may be afraid this is another Mortal Kombat vs DC Universe, but rest assured this is a very well executed fighter that would stand well even without the DC characters, so these guys(and gals) being included just makes an already great product shine all the more brightly. Give it a shot, it won't disappoint. ... show more

  • Awesome Spoiler free.
Platform: PlayStation 3 Edition: Standard
I have to say this is the best licensed fighting game I have played. This game might be the best fighter of the year. The cast is massive, the controls are smooth and easy enough that a newbie, with practice, will be pulling off combos in no time. The game itself looks beautiful. the animations are smooth, and the environments are extremely usable. The classes are well balanced and each character has specific powers and abilities that feel right. hits feel and look brutal. Almost each level has at least 2 transitions (Atlantis is the exception with none) The story in fighting games is usually a casualty but for once it is in my opinion the star of this game. it is written by vets of the comic industry and with the exception of a couple of hiccups makes it believable that these heroes could fight. The addition of Star Labs makes for an intriguing detour from the standard ladders and story. It does take a while to get all of them unlocked but still worth a look. These are mini games specific to each character on the roster. If there is a gripe for this game it has to be this. The game does offer DLC and a season pass option but the season pass only allows you the four additional characters (Batgirl, Zod, Lobo and Scorpion from the venerable M K series.. It does not include the recent addition of Martian Manhunter or Zatana They are 4.99.each. I recommend this to fans of DC and Fighting Games in general. ... show more
