Description

IN ALEXA'S SHOES – a dramatic, uplifting true story of a young girl's struggle to overcome great odds to survive through WWII. In the autumn of 1940, thirteen-year-old Alexa’s happy life is ripped from her as she, her mother, and many of the locals are rounded up by the Nazis in Poland. Loaded onto cattle trucks, they are transported to an unknown destination. Terror and uncertainty become the new normal. Life is a continuous nightmare as she is selected by an SS officer’s wife, destined to become little more than their slave. Separated from everyone she loves, Alexa relies on her Christian faith, inner strength and courage, to endure through her long nightmare. Her story takes her on a treacherous journey across war-ravaged Europe in search of her family and the life she once knew. Despite living through unimaginable hardships and life-threatening danger, Alexa feels that someone, or something, seems to be looking out for her. Years later, she finds out that not all was as it seemed, as hidden secrets from this dark period in history are revealed to her. In Alexa’s Shoes is a historical novel that beckons the reader to follow in the footsteps of a real-life individual who walks by faith to triumph over tragedy, one step at a time. It is based on the true story of the author’s grandmother, one of faith, hope, love, forgiveness and the incredible resilience of the human sprit under severe trials. • Excellent read!
I gave this book a 5 star rating due to the fact it is a true story. The author took the time to write this life story of her grandmother As the reader feels she is in the time and place. Excellently crafted.

  • Incredible story
I found this story different than other historical fiction WWII books I have read. I learned knew things the Nazis did and it is hard to understand how they could live with themselves and how they could later try to atone for their evilness. How they think nothing of it years later.

  • .
This is a gripping story of a young girl's faith and fortitude in the face of the greatest menace in history. The story was beautiful but marred by instances of poor grammar, incorrect punctuation, and awkward sentence structure. Many passages were overly described . In spite of these technical flaws, the story was well told. ... show more

  • Powerful and Profound
I am an avid reader and fly through books rather quickly, but every now and then I will read a book that gives me pause. “In Alexa’s Shoes” was one of them. This novel is the powerful true story of the author’s grandmother, Alexa, a young Polish Christian girl who was captured by the Nazis and enslaved for five years in Bitburg, Germany as the unpaid housekeeper of an SS officer. From start to finish, Alexa’s story is profoundly moving and unexpected. This is not your typical WWII novel and features topics I was not previously aware of, such as the kidnapping and enslavement of “undesirable” non-Jewish children from all over Europe by the Nazis. If you love stories of human fortitude, overcoming hardship against all odds, faith, and forgiveness, you will love “In Alexa’s Shoes”. I can’t recommend it enough. So happy I picked this one up! ... show more

  • Loved it!
It is an amazing book! The way it is written is great. There were some times where I was so engulfed in the story that I started crying. I'm that kind of reader. Some part were hard to follow but I blame the many interruptions as I read. I seriously recommend this book for readers of 12 and up.❤👍

  • Good story in spite of some writing issues
This was a good story that could have been a great story with better writing and editing. The style of largely telling instead of showing inhibited me from getting truly emotionally invested in the story as much as I could have. There were also many errors as mentioned by other reviewers which were distracting. Overall, I would recommend this book in spite of its shortcomings. It is a beautiful story of strong faith, overcoming adversity with a positive attitude, and forgiveness toward those who harm us. ... show more

  • very interesting read
Story from a perspective of someone brutalized by the war but not as a concentration camp prisoner, but as a prisoner in her own way. I kept thinking Mark was going to play back into the story but he never did. I was hoping the granddaughter would find him and they would be reunited. Would have been interesting to hear even a brief mention of how life turned out for her 3 friends in terms of marriages, kids etc and if they ever did a reunion. Other than the loose threads, a compelling read and well written. ... show more

  • A story worth telling
Alexa's story is definitely worth telling. I am amazed at Alexa's resilience and faith but sometimes not convinced of her forgiveness throughout under the various circumstances. I am sure this is part of seeing the past through her granddaughter's eyes. I had to read this because my mother was also taken by the Germans from her home in Poland to work in the German factories. My mother did not talk about it at least to me. She certainly wanted to forget. The prose is not polished as well as it could have been. It is difficult to tell fact from embellishment. It is written as a novel or so the description says. For these reasons I gave it 4 stars. ... show more
