  • A cool, entertaining manga collection of one-shot stories by Mashima Hiro from 1998-2003
Mangaka Mashima Hiro is best known for his series "Fairy Tail" and "Rave Master". But the road to becoming the successful manga writer/artist he was today was quick and easy, in fact, from his debut work in 1998 with "Magician", he had created other work around the time he was working on "Rave Master", some that got published, others that didn't. But the one shots he had created from 1998 through 2003 has been published in a manga collection titled "Hiro Mashima's Playground" which comes with a total of eight stories. What's interesting is to read his one-shot work, because they are actually pretty fun and entertaining. But it's interesting to read his original "Fairy Tail" and to see how the work was tweaked to be the series that people have come to love today. For example, "Fairy Tail" back then was about two individuals who come from different clans, one of fire, the other of water. For those who read "Fairy Tail" now know that the storyline is about magic guilds and the members of the Fairy Tail guild, as opposed to few characters, the current version has many. I found his debut work "Magician" to be entertaining, about a magician and his friends trying to rescue the principal's dog, who is not exactly what it seems. "Cocona" is fascinating about a Princess of the Devils who will give up being a princess and devil to become human to pursue a man she likes. What's interesting is to see the girl/cat. We see this in "Fairy Tail" with a few charactrs. "Bad Boys Song" is more or less a story that Mashima wrote, inspired by his childhood when he and his friends created a band in high school, despite not being good. But yet they were very happy doing it. And you have a few other stories that are just fun to read and are entertaining, but also fascinating are the comments by Mashima on what his feelings were of each one-shot, why he wrote it and a cool insight in the brain of one of manga's popular mangaka. Overall, if you enjoy Mashima Hiro's work with "Rave Master" and "Fairy Tail", then definitely give "Hiro Mashima's Playground" a try! The fact that you get a cool collection of eight stories in a 432-page booklet, makes this collection worth owning and reading! Recommended! ... show more

  • Hiro Mashima's Playground, it's worth the trip. You'll have a good time.
Review Result: [Buy Today, Get it Someday, or Pass it Away] Buy today! This large collection of short stories isn't short on entertainment value. I liked seeing more of Hiro Mashima's work and saw some glimpses into his future hit Fairy Tail in some of these short stories that came out before. Full Review Two are stories about teenagers in school, there’s a story that’s also a comedy/game (Plue’s Adventure), a couple magic based stories, an x-mas themed magic story, and a hero for hire based story. I liked all of them except “Bad Boy’s Song.” It was about some delinquents forming a band for their graduation ceremony. Band stories never interest me. This one also didn’t… “Magician” was the 1st school-based story. It has some magic and a transformation leading to a fairly interesting rescue of a captured dog. “Fairy Tale” not to be confused with Hiro Mashima’s other later and long running story “Fairy Tail”, was a interesting story of elemental based magic clans arguing in a meeting while the son of one clan and the beautiful daughter of another clan solve the problem and save the day. “Concona” was solid short story a devil girl in love with fool. She tries to become a human to date him, but the story ends with a battle instead basically. “Plue’s Adventure” takes a couple of minor/mascot characters from “Rave Master” and send them on a quest setup as choose your own adventure type story. It’s comedy mostly with just about every panel giving you the option to do something to advance to one of several different numbered panels. Prior knowledge of Rave Master, by the same author, isn’t needed. “MP” is a magic story of a girl and or mini-dragon guide as she seeks out a magic tome, aka a book, with some fights and surprises. “X-mas Hearts” is a story of a stanta kid who wants to just skip x-mas to eat cake but he ends up saving all of x-mas and his fellow santas mostly by chance. Lastly, “Combo Squad Mixture” is a hero story of adult super heroes who fight for ratings to earn toy sponsor money. An unlikely trio train with an odd/crazy manager to get to 90% popularity. Everything besides “Bad Boy’s Song” was pretty good. This manga is well worth your time. ... show more
