  • Don't waste your time!
Color: Bronze
First, I'll verify what other reviewers have said: if you want heat, buy the traditional kind of tabletop heater. These look cool, but they simply don't put out the heat. But that's not why they only get one star. I bought two, and out-of-the-box, both fired up right away. Then I didn't try to use them for about six weeks (weather, schedule, etc). Last night I tried to use them, and I got one to light, but...talk about sensitive! The thing kept going out at the slightest movement or touch (I'm not kidding - it got hilarious pretty quickly because we would literally touch it and it would go out). Ridiculous. The other one doesn't even give me a spark now, so there's apparently no hope for it at all. And, since I'm six weeks out, the items are no longer eligible for return. THAT'S why they get one star. ... show more

  • Height is smaller than advertised; but enjoy it .
Color: Bronze
This is not 39” tall as advertised but 33 3/4”. Even the box it came in indicates 39” height. I was concerned about height due to the patio table I had planned on using so this smaller height actually worked out better. How could the mid-measure by 5”? Anyway this thing fired right up and created the ambiance I was looking for and a comfortable amount of heat for our cool Texas evenings. Keep in mind this is a small heater which only produces a small amount of heat of 2 to 3 foot radius depending on the wind. If you want more heat get a bigger heater. I have the larger version of this one and heat can be felt up to 6’ away on calm nights. ... show more

  • Absolute FIRE HAZARD!
Looks great. Doesn't throw off a ton of heat but does fine for the Houston, Texas winters. ***UPDATE January 13, 2017*** ***FIRE HAZARD*** My 11 year old son and I were enjoying a cool night under our covered patio using this heater when IT LITERALLY CAUGHT ON FIRE!!! The glass actually caught on fire near the base and started melting! It is less than 2 months old and used sparingly. We hadn't even gotten through the second tank. This thing is an absolute dangerous piece of garbage. BE VERY CAREFUL!!! Do not leave this unattended for even one minute! Thank goodness I saw the smoke and was able to turn it off before it literally melted itself and possibly burned the entire house down. ... show more

  • Little heat, lasted 2 seasons
Color: Bronze
purchased in 2015, Review in 2018. I used this for a screened in porch heater for function and style, mostly style. It was easy setup, easy use. Used it weekends for 2 winters, very lightly. Packed it away in original boxes and stored after winter. When I pulled it from it packaging in winter 2017, I could not get the pilot light to stay lit, therefore can not light the heater. Searched for repair parts, because I'm a handy type fellow, and found it cheaper to buy a new one than repair this one. SO, if you want a stylish cool looking heater for 1-2 seasons, this is your item. It does not produce enough heat in a large area to make a difference. It does look nice though. To place it in a smaller area that it will warm up, I would be concerned of the exhaust gases. ... show more

  • Good value, good vendor attitude,
5 star review is based on value, EG, cost vs. operation and vendor attitude. Bought one of these a couple of months ago to replace the gas engine on a log splitter with a 5" cylinder. Low cost made me dubious, but, as I'm pretty good at beating up flaky manufacturer's, thought I'd take chance. Unit ran for about 3 hours, at medium PTO idle speed, then completely froze up. Not good. Contacted the vendor via Amazon's messaging service. Very quick response, several messages back and forth with details. As I had mentioned that I had a shop that was capable of taking the unit apart, and re-assembling, they suggested I do so, they'd pay for any locally procured parts to fix it. Verified that this would not impact warranty. Unusual approach, but I liked it, would be much faster than sending the unit back, waiting for them to diagnose. Good attitude. Opened the unit up, found a piece of hard plastic jammed in the gears. Had to come from the manufacturing process, in my application the supply oil line has a an automotive type filter just up stream of the unit inlet, no way it came from my tank or piping. Removed the plastic piece that caused the binding, re-assembled, tested. Not satisfactory performance, likely caused by internal score marks that appeared to be caused by the seizing. (Hydraulic pumps have very close internal tolerances.) Passed this info back to them, they shipped a replacement the same day, didn't want the old unit back, hence no return shipping hassles. EXCELLENT attitude, New unit now has about 40 hours of use on it, works fine. Smooth, quiet operation, plenty of power at slow tractor idle to do some nasty 24" Diam X 18" long pieces of old hardwood with big knots. The internal inspection gave me chance to see the gears, bearings - looked like good quality, heavy duty. Time will tell on that. All and all, seems to be decent quality unit, very good value for the cost when compared to other units. Most important was the vendors attitude towards taking care of the problem. 40+ years of dealing professionaly with high end equipment manufacturers has taught that me that even top quality manufacturers mess up occasionally, the mark of real quality is seen in how they pick up the pieces. This vendor could not have done more or been easier to work with. Very pleased with them. Caveats: You will likely have to do some fab work to mount the unit. Only has the 3/8" X 13 bolt holes shown in the picts to attach to. I built a frame to allow mounting on the log splitter chassis, worked well, but that also meant I had to find a piece of 1 3/8" X 6 male spline to allow connecting to the PTO drive shaft. If slid directly on the tractor PTO shaft, would definitely need a frame to keep it from spinning. Not a fatal flaw, nothing a little metal fab work couldn't deal with, but something to be aware of. Output at 540 PTO RPM doesn't seem to be quite the 21 GPM per spec. (Rough measurement, based on speed of shaft movement.) Again, not a fatal flaw, but something to be aware of. Bottom line, If I needed it I'd buy another one without hesitation. ... show more

  • Heater was shipped with existing damage !!
Color: Bronze
I love this heater. This is the third time I've purchased this Hiland model. However, this heater arrived damaged. The external shipping container was not damaged. Rather, the original manufacturer's product box was damaged on one corner, resulting in a severely bent heater frame and door. See attached photo. This leads me to the conclusion that the damage occurred prior to being shipped to me. Additionally, the shipping box was much larger than the original product box. That's fine, but there was only 1 piece of crumpled paper filling the void in the box. Thus, the product box was not secure inside the shipping box - I'm sure it moved around during transit. Amazon quickly replaced this damaged heater (thanks for the excellent response ). However, the original heater should not have been shipped in the first place. ... show more
