Description

Early in his career Gustave Baumann (1881-1971) lived in Chicago and spent time in rural Indiana and the Northeast, but he found his true home in New Mexico. He moved to Santa Fe in 1918 and spent the rest of his life there, producing a wealth of woodblock prints depicting the southwestern landscape and its people. As his images grew more complex, he devised innovative printing techniques, creating luminous prints with warm, blended hues. This book reproduces more than fifty of the artist's woodblock prints and gouaches and features an essay by New Mexico Museum of Art curator Joseph Traugott. Read more

  • get past page 25
Format: Hardcover
When I first starting browsing the book I thought all the illustrations were going to be 1/4 page or smaller and was wishing I bought the kindle version to enlarge the paintings. Then after page 25 they were all full page and glorious. Now I know why many of the art magazines list his woodcuts as a great investment. Cannot afford that but $15+ for 50 beautiful woodcut illustrations is in my budge (the book price). I recommend this book strongly for landscape art lovers and this and other books that feature native american lifestyle during the period of his art. ... show more

  • Wonderful Collection and History of Baumann
Format: Hardcover
I can recommend this as an informative book with lots of Baumann's work - I particularly enjoyed seeing Baumann's opaque watercolor sketches and the resulting print, side by side. This is an excellent collection of his work.

  • Great Little Book
Format: Hardcover
This is a fabulous book that contains woodcuts and gouache paintings not previously seen in other Baumann books. The colors seem accurate and it is nicely designed with great front and back covers. I only wish it would have been printed larger (most of the woodcuts are reproduced at 6.5 inches tall). Baumann's woodcuts are generally quite small and it would have been great to see them at their actual size. Also it would have been nice if the author included dimensions. Despite these flaws the book is a must have for all enthusiasts of Baumann and the art of the woodcut. ... show more
