  • Be sure your copy has pages in order. Then Read this Very Informative Book!
Check your copy when it arrives for pages out of order. I had to reorder and even then my copy arrived with the same problem. The book was so informative that I contacted the publisher and they sent me a new copy. Hopefully now Amazon now has new copies that are correctly printed. If you do any kind of graphics for learning, this is the book for you. I'm an instructional designer and often help faculty and staff with their Powerpoints. This book provides the information I need to inform the graphics I use. I also highly recommend. eLearning and the Science of Instruction by Clark and Mayer for the very fascinating empirical evidence. ... show more

  • How to tell effective learning graphics from not.
This book is a great desktop reference for speechmakers, courseware developers and teachers - all of whom feel the need for graphics in their presentations. This book not only tells you how to create graphics that engage, it also tells you how to create such graphics while avoiding making and inserting graphics into your content that are nothing more than decorative and therefore dulling. ... show more

  • Excellent!
I have been looking for a book like this for a long time. As an instructional and material designer, I have developed a lot of ideas about what graphics work best for what in learning. This book deepens and extends my understanding in several different directions and makes it easier to select the best graphics for each situation. I HIGHLY recommend it to anyone involved in designing (hard-copy or e-)learning material or presentations. ... show more

  • HELPFUL
A very practical approach to design principles that improve meaningful learning. I will be keeping this one. It has a lot of great visuals as well.

  • Not much different than the first edition - don't pay the bloated price.
First of all I have to say that this review applies to the second edition of the book and not the actual content. I accidentally ordered and received the first version (published in 2003) of this book prior to ordering and receiving this edition (published in 2010). I made the decision to order the newer and much more expensive second edition because I thought surely with the changes that have been made in graphic design & eLearning, the first edition would be out of date. I'm disappointed to say you wouldn't know that from viewing this book. While Ruth Clark is nothing short of brilliant (seriously, I've read at least 4 of her books and they are all so insightful and informative) and while the guidelines presented in this book are no exception, this edition seems like a release from the publisher to make more money. For example, most of the graphs and figures are exactly the same as the 2003 edition. The layout actually breaks some of her evidence-based research guidelines (i.e. put the visual and the words on the same page to prevent overuse of the working memory). Most of the graphics are not available on the "free" website as claimed. Worst of all, there are tons of typos (1 every 10 pages or so). As Ruth Clark would say, bottom line = buy a good condition used copy of the first edition. ... show more
