  • The guide on lighting for film and video
I teach film and video at the college level, and whenever a student wants a book recommended as a general learn lighting book I recommend this. 1. This comes with a great DVD that shows visually the difference between many types of hard and soft light as well as numerous light placements and types of bounce. A lot of people who get into film are visual learners, and this DVD is awesome for those of us who like to look at something for results based on how the lighting is set up. 2. I love that Blaine gives such a detailed description of how electricity works. This is something that is very difficult to learn unless it's really laid out there for you. The book is almost worth it just for this section. 3. The pictures int his book are great. They are from very accessible movies and are great examples of each thing that Blaine is trying to show. Along with Blaine Brown's cinematography book you really only need to get two books to get a great understanding of the medium. I would never recommend reading over real world experience. But by being on set and reading this book you'll be off to a great start. ... show more

  • Great for anyone who is ready to take video and film seriously
Book covers all the elements in lighting. I found myself ready to skip a few chapters, electricity for example, but read through the chapters. Glad I did, I learned something new in every single chapter. So don't skip a page, no matter how skilled you may believe you are. I did wish I had a little more detail or examples on creating and shaping light as another review suggested, or at least on the DVD. Either way, this book is a must for every anyone serious about putting out a quality video production. Some of the images and info direction was a little clumsy, but you will figure it out as you continue to read through. Well worth the value. I just began reading Blain Brown's other book "Cinematography" and also loving it. ... show more

  • Great resource
In what you might expect from a focal press book, Brown gets right down to business. He covers all of the basic stuff folks lighting rookies need to know to avoid looking or sounding like a fool on set. Matched with some practical experience, this offers a solid education on professional lighting. Lots of great images, the book is very good. And thorough. ... show more

  • Super in depth that wlll give you more info than you can handle
It is a real treatise on lighting measurement and stuff that I guess the real pros in allcohollywood would really find valuable or perhaps pros at CNN. Frankly, it's a ton more than the average videographer would ever need or likely use. But, that doesn't mean it isn't good stuff. The tips in the book are excellent, found a couple of handy ones that gave me some new ideas on handling old problems. What was super helpful was the discussion of setups. Perhaps less so, the in depth review of every lighting unit, it seems, out there but you'll darn sure know what the options are once you go over that. The lighting setups were the most interesting to me but there were not too many of them. Perhaps that's not the focus of the book but it would have been more useful if there had been about 4x as many setups in different situations. My assessment is more for Motion Picture lighting and major production studio video than any run and gun or smaller video shoots. I just wish there had been a lot more setups that were not major production setups and more ordinary stuff a business video would run into along with a bit more discussion of why something was done and what else could have been used. Clearly the author is a wizard with lighting, I hope in the next edition he goes down in size to working videographers who shot weddings, interiors, stores, interviews, cars, etc. I'd buy it first one off the press, be that digital or hard copy! ... show more

  • Easy to follow!
Speaking as a student, this was for sure one of the easier text books to read! I'm a visual/hands-on learner, so a lot of reading doesn't help. I study better looking at examples, and this text is filled with examples on different lights, set ups, etc.

  • Fantastic Book
Required text for my Lighting class and it helped out a lot. Very well written, the DVD isn't that bad either, though it cold have been made better. If you are in film school or want to have a higher understanding of lighting for cinema, this book is essential.

  • Mostly About Film rather than Video
There is a lot of good background information in this book, and the accompanying video DVD provides excellent examples of the technical lessons in the text. The text includes deep technical details about many things (mostly related to film, including still photography). The only criticism I have about the book is that it may be mis-titled in the respect that much of the technical discussion in this book is specifically about still photography and film, some of it applicable in many ways to motion picture film, and some of it explicitly specific to still photography. My guess is that the author's background is mostly in film, including still portrait photography, rather than video, as the book has a very strong bias toward film and relatively less detail applicable to video. ... show more

  • Motion Picture and Video Lighting
Seriously! This is a damn good book to learn necessary things all about lighting. Teaches you different terms of light set ups and explains why certain set ups or types of lights are necessary for such a subject. What I didn't expect, cause I didn't really notice to read it, was that this book included a companion DVD with video tutorials. What a nice touch. ... show more
