Can’t beat physics or good leverage. Works exactly as intended and once you get used to it, nothing compares. Best hand tool I’ve ever used. The short handled version is handy for when you’re splitting firewood too. Going on two years with extensive use. Handle is showing wear and the head is starting to come lose. My fault for leaving it out in the elements.

I live in an area where pit vipers (copperheads mostly) are common. I wanted something that would give me a little more reach than picking wood by hand. After getting this tool and putting it to use I found it not only gave me a little distance from the blocks of wood, it also made it easy to move them 10 to 15 feet without taking a step. Also saves the back. If you're handling more than a cord of blocked wood on a regular basis you'll love this too. Made in Germany (not China).

I bought three different hookaroons Made by Council Tool (USA) 44$ Made by Fiskar (Finland) 42$ Made by Ochsenkopf (aka OX Head) (Germany) 66$ The first one I got was the Council tool. It comes as an unfinished wood handle with red powder coated head. I didn’t like the color so I wire brushed off the paint and oiled the handle. Of the three, I think doing this gave it the best allure. It is the most dull of the three, but has a lot of material so it can be sharpened. Second I got the Fiskars. It is extremely lightweight because it is hollow. It is made from a strong plastic so weatherproof with a good handle that won't slip. This one is the sharpest of the three, but also seems to be the most fragile. Last I got the Ox Head. It is kind of like a hybrid of the other two. It is middle sized, sharper than the Council Tool but not as sharp as the Fiskars. Lacquer wood finish with a yellow painted head and handle. Honestly, at first I was not impressed with the Council Tool due to it being dull. I had a hard time getting it to bite small dry branch size cuts. It has really grown on me though. I thought I would like the Ox head the most because it was durable yet still able to stick into the wood. After taking all three up to the mountains I learned they all work really well, but for very different tasks. The Council Tool is excellent at dragging the biggest and heaviest logs. You can get a good full swing into the wood and it does stick just fine. Its having the longest handle makes pulling easiest. I do think it is only good for dragging wood though, not lifting. The Fiskars is the opposite. I couldn't get it to drag anything, plus it is way too short so I would have to hunch over to drag, which defeats the purpose of a hookaroon anyway. On the other hand, the Fiskars is the best for lifting wood above your waist due to its light weight and sharpness. So when I am trying to load rounds into the back of the truck or stack splits, the light weight of the Fiskars is perfect. The Ox Head is a good all around. I think it is kind of ugly at first, but I am sure I can sand the paint and finish off everything and oil it like I did the Council tool. It does seem sturdy. It is capable of both dragging logs around almost as well as the Council tool and it also can stick into rounds and splits well too (while being a little heavier than Fiskars). Im glad I bought all three to figure out the differences. All serve a specific purpose and all come from countries with reputations for producing high quality products.

For years, I have been muscling fire wood around the hard way. Recently, I had two large hemlocks taken down, and after being bucked up into rounds - they were 32" in diameter and weighing over 300 pounds. To get them into my tractor loader I was manually rolling them over to the loader, then tipping them into the loader, which required further adjusting to keep them from tipping out. Well... like a fool, I ended up spraining both of my wrists pretty bad which took me out of action for several weeks. Since then I checked out countless YouTube videos and discovered this handy tool that loggers and home firewood folks have been using for years to do exactly what I was doing the hard way. I settled on this Hookeroon due to it's craftsmanship and head design. I like that it is a solid piece of steel. The hook is sharp and curved just enough to easily stab into any side or face of the log effortlessly. It stays hooked, allowing me to much more easily maneuver the log around - or pick it up if light enough, and easily releases by simply tilting it down with a slight wiggle. The handle is top quality wood with perfect curves to it for a good grip - both as a long swing, or choking up on it for a shorter swing. It is light and very easy to carry. My only regret is that it took me so many years of wrestling with wood the stupid and hard way!

Hey, if you heat with firewood, process your own firewood or have anything to do with firewood, do yourself a favor if you’re looking at this review and just pull the trigger on this purchase. You don’t have to be a full time logger to benefit this tool, it’s a time and back saver. Also helps move large pieces of wood around so you’re not wrestling around when you could be standing upright as we are intended. Just get it. I have the long and short versions, short being more useful believe it or not. I’ve found that the Gedore brand has a slimmer handle than some others, allowing a better grip and feels “ just right” to me. If you’ve stacked wood all your life, and haven’t used this tool, please join the 17th century and see what you’ve been missing. Now for the bad... do not impale any of your limbs with this sharp hook on a stick, it will ruin your day and your wife will remind you what a bada$$ logger you were gonna be every time she sees you limping around. Im just guessing about that as so far the thought of it has kept me safe. If you have concerns about the safety of this sharp object and its use, maybe a pellet stove is for you.

I don't know why I have never heard of this tool before; it makes handling wood for whatever purpose easy. Loading rounds into & out of a truck or onto a log splitter table is fast and easy with this back-saving tool. There is a slight learning curve on using. However, I have had no problems with the quality of the device using it on seven cords of firewood. Highly recommend.
