Book is nice sized, hardback, with tight binding. Paper is thick with lines if wanted to add notes about the pictures/things glued to the page. It's got a nice old fashioned look and feel to it that shows high quality. It was exactly what she was hoping for! I absolutely adore the paper and the cover and the variety that this set comes with, but if you want to use the journal to scrap book, the binding is so tight that after several entries you're going to see damage to the spine, meaning keeping it in good condition long term is going to be difficult.
