Description

The Frye Company For more than 153 years, Frye craftsmen have been dedicated to the art of shoemaking, creating modern patterns, discovering materials and even inventing machinery. Rooted in authentic American heritage, The Frye Company uses the best leathers, designs and innovations in the pursuit of timeless, artisanal style. Frye boots were worn by soldiers on both sides of America's Civil War, soldiers in the Spanish-American war, and by Teddy Roosevelt and his Rough Riders. When homesteading drew adventurous New England families to the West during the mid and late 1800's many of the pioneers wore Frye Boots for the long journey. Today Frye remains true to its roots with its line of heritage boots, but continues to innovate as it introduces chic new handbags, pumps, and sandals to its collection. Frye’s mission, to make iconic leather goods that endure, has remained unchanged throughout its storied history. Harness 12R Nothing says Made in the USA like the Frye Harness Boot. Inspired by the Civil War cavalry, this iconic boot is American craftsmanship at its best. Not for the faint of heart, these biker boots are uncompromising and get better with age. Unlined with rugged rubber bottoms, it needs a certain type to make this boot his own. Sourced from domestic and imported products. The men's belted Harness 12R boot from Frye has a rugged character and rough attitude but exudes pure style. This attractive pull-on boot has an oiled leather upper with brushed metal hardware, decorative ankle harness with buckle and o-ring detailing, a 15 inch calf circumference, neoprene oil resistant soles with a full-length leather midsole for maximum comfort and durability, and a cushioned insole for additional comfort. Made in USA.

  • Great Boots
Size: 10.5 Color: Gaucho
Received these boots about a week ago. First thing I did upon unpacking was remove the cardboard inserts. There are several, and apparently some people have never bought shoes before and missed the pieces inside the shoe. Reach down in there and take them out. Next thing I did was trimmed and installed a pair of insoles. That's right, these boots don't come with insoles. Unlike your Nike's, most boots do not come with insoles. I personally like the Dr. Scholl's "Work Boot" gel inserts at the low-end (they're about $10) and SuperFeet Green (about $40) at the high end. Select an insole that best matches your foot and biomechanics. Don't know? Go to a qualified shoe store (a specialized running store is best) and have them watch you walk and run. Finally, I selected a quality boot sock. Point 6, Fox River or Smartwool are good choices. After a week of fairly steady wear, including three straight days, the boots are properly broken in and fit great. I do wish the shaft was about 1/2" smaller, but the wider mouth does make the boot easier to put on and take off. The sole is excellent. Sturdy but pliable with a good pattern. They will slip on ice but that's true for anything. On most surfaces they provide solid grip and balance. Regarding long-term care, avoid the Frye leathercare product. There are some expensive French products on the market that work great, but the best bang for buck is this beeswax-based butter: http://www.amazon.com/dp/B00PHV9HXS/ref=wl_it_dp_o_pC_nS_ttl?_encoding=UTF8&colid=1CL07PD0KL43J&coliid=I1X5GD4MGX8D5K. A little goes a long way and it shouldn't change the color of your leather. Always do a test spot in a less visable area first. ... show more

  • Best Frye Harness boots I’ve owned
I’m a 33yr old female who has been wearing various pairs of Frye harness boots since I was 17. No matter how many times my preferences in fashion have shifted over the years, these boots have always held their place in my closet and on my feet, no matter what popular trends have come and gone. They’re a timeless look that can be coordinated with so many differing styles and vibes. That being said, I have now switched over to wearing the men’s harness boots and won’t ever purchase the women’s style again. I am a women’s size 8-8.5 shoe. The women’s harness boots always have felt tight on my feet, even when trying on a size 9 (I do not have wide feet). They’ve contoured the shape of the women’s harness boot so much that it only really fits one maybe two shapes of women’s feet. The men’s harness boot is straightforward; no contouring, no slanted heel. Thicker leather even. My foot settles right into the footbed without feeling any sort of red flag that would suggest painful pressure points or squeezing of the toes. The men’s harness feel sturdier, which in consequence does mean they’re a little bit heavier to clunk around in versus the more delicate female design. But to me that is purely evidence that the men’s are made sturdier and will last longer. My guess is that it’s probably because Frye knows that the majority of women will buy another pair as soon as theirs gets scuffed up or the boot shaft starts sagging at the ankle due to the poor leather quality that I’m convinced is only reserved for the women’s styles. I purchased a men’s size 7B and when worn with normal hiking socks, they feel like they were tailored for me. This review is purely my opinion due to my own unique experience with consistently wearing Frye harness boots for the last 16 years! I still love the few pairs of women’s harness boots I have left that I just couldn’t part with, but the men’s pair is a game changer for me. ... show more

  • I suggest you upsize
Size: 9.5 Color: Black
I bought my regular size and this is my 3rd pair with this brand. This wasn't even my first pair of the exact boot i had the same boots 15 years ago. The quality is amazing and they look great. These boots have a very tight fit and do not form to your foot at all. Something changed or i received a wrong size. Ive worn them 3 times for several hours each time and every time they become unbearably uncomfortable after 30 minutes. They have yet to break in and im at my wits end. I cant even return these because of the timing of my order and my first chance to wear them. Im stuck with these now and Amazon wont help me. ... show more

  • Great boots, but not perfect
Size: 12 Color: Gaucho
I just purchased my second pair in this same style and color. I still have the first pair and they are three years old now. They have held up very well with no rips, tears, busted seams, etc. And they still look great. The only reason for getting a new pair is that the original pair was too small from the beginning. I thought they would stretch and they did not. I wore them anyway as long as I could stand, but finally broke down and picked up a new pair in the correct size. First the bad about this boot: The foam rubber insole (what Frye calls "memory foam") is not very comfortable. It also does not wick moisture so any foot sweat just sits on top of the insole. This may contribute to the fact that said insole does not last very long. In my first pair, I think it only took a couple of months or less to start to disintegrate. Since it was crumbling away, I just tore it all out and put in some gel insoles which drastically improved both the comfort and moisture situation. With this latest pair, I tore out the insole and put in the gel ones right off the bat. The only other negative is that there is no stacked leather heel, just plastic. I think leather would look much better, and the price of the boot warrants it. Now the good: Obviously for me the good outweighs the bad or I would not have ordered these boots a second time. The leather is gorgeous right out of the box, and only gets better looking as it's worn in. The look and feel of the leather is really nice. (I use mink oil which adds suppleness, and also darkens the leather, which I like.) I get compliments on these boots all the time. And with the gel insoles they are comfortable enough to wear all day, and I do a good bit of walking during the course of a day. The stitching and leather hold up really well. After wearing them for a few days consecutively though, my feet and ankles get a little sore, so I switch shoes for a couple of days. ... show more

  • My opinion... best boots on the market
I am a huge fan of Frye shoes and boots. I have had several pairs over the years and these are the same high quality, American made, great looking boots I wore right through the soles last time (and it took a lot of miles in a lot of tough places to do that). Frye does offer refurbishing and my old boots are on their way for new soles and general reconditioning. I look forward to more years with them, but these new ones are just as I expected. Soft but tough leather. Incredibly well made. Well fitting. Smart looking. It's plainly obvious that they were made by people, not machines. It's also obvious that those people care very much about the product they are putting out there. I ride motorcycles, and this is my riding boot. I also shoot trap and skeet, and I wear them in the field. They went with me to the Middle East and North Africa. They went with me to Asia and Europe. I am never afraid that they won't hold up to the task. This is my newest pair of Frye's but I hope they won't be my last. My strongest recommendation!! ... show more

  • First Pair of Boots!
This is the first pair of boots i've ever owned! After trying on many pairs of boots from other manufacturers, and not finding a good fit, i took a chance and ordered these Frye boots, thinking i would need to return them. I ordered the size that i always wear in most shoes, and they fit absolutely perfect! Nice room in the toe area, comfort right out of the box.The leather on top is soft, with a broken in feel. Boot cut jeans, and my regular cut Levis, slid right over the top of the boots.I found my self walking around the house in amazement, sitting down, realizing i still had them on after awhile. Didn't want to take them off! Nice quality boot. Soft leather insole. With a little slip in the heel, i feel they fit true to size like i was told they should fit, by many boot people. Can't wait to break them in, and see how they feel. I'm expecting great results. I love the boots, and i'm sure i will buy another pair soon! True to size, quality, comfort, and MADE IN USA!! ... show more

  • So so boots.
Size: 14 Color: Black
Alright, review time. 1. Sizing All these reviewers say that the boots are 1/2 to a full size too big. I made the mistake of taking their advice and ordering a 14 (I normally wear a 15 and there's no 14.5 available. This turned out to be was a $200 mistake. The boots are sized correctly, ASSUMING YOU WILL PUT INSOLES IN THEM. I've since bought another pair of 12Rs in a size 15 and they fit fine with a $10 Dr. Sholes insole--and are more comfortable that way anwyay as THESE BOOTS COME WITH NO INSOLE. TL;DR: Buy your normal size + a pair of insoles. However, there is still one aspect of the sizing / style that's odd and I don't know if it's unique to the larger sizes or not, but the shaft is huge--almost comically so. I can fit my entire size XXXL hand in the shaft of the boot while wearing. Not sure what Frye is thinking with this--it would be a much better boot with a couple of inches taken out of the circumference of the shaft. The result is that you can't wear pants over these boots unless you wear 1970's bell-bottoms. At size 15 I don't have a lot of models to choose from though, so I just have to live with it--if I wore a 13 or lower, I would not buy this boot. 2. Style As mentioned above, the shaft is huge, much bigger than it appears in the pictures. This is not a calf-hugging boot by any means. The harness is purely decorative and is actually rather loosely fitted to the boot. 3. Quality The leather is good quality. The craftsmanship is what I would expect from a $89 boot, not a > $300 one. It's China quality even though these are supposedly made in the USA or Mexico. Nothing you'd notice unless you're holding the boots in your hands though--just things like nicks in the leather and irregular stitching. 4. Price I got these on sale, so they were only twice as much as similar cheap no-name boots from the army surplus store. I'll just say flat out that these boots are not worth more than $200. So, if you want these, I suggest waiting for a sale rather than paying the ridiculous (for the quality) asking price. Hell, for $450 you can get a pair of custom made boots from another manufacturer. ... show more

  • Color NOT as pictured; great boot!
Be warned!!! If you order Tan, you will end up with something closer to the Chocolate color. I have posted two pictures to give an idea of the color. I called Frye Customer Service and the nice woman said she had heard this several times and has passed it on to management (she sent me some free boot conditioner just for asking). 5 stars on customer service. As it turns out, I like the color of the boot and am keeping them. They went on tight, and for me at least are true-to-size. They were only slightly tight in the forefoot, and have already gotten more comfortable after just a few hours. No heel slippage whatsoever. I am going to Arizona with the family and figured now was as good a time as any to get these. They give me a nice height increase (I am already 6'1") that was noticeable. I feel great wearing them, and my wife said she loves them on me. Made in the USA quality, and in my opinion, well worth the price!! ... show more
