  • Chris Stapleton continues to grow, and never makes a mis-step
Chris Stapleton can do no wrong. And that's just wrong. Chris is now showing the kind of versatility that demonstrates he will be one of my favorites for a long time to come. First, my obligatory hipster line-- I was listening to Chris Stapleton before it was cool. I've been following his career since the first Steeldrivers album, being blown away by his voice. I followed him away from bluegrass, with his first solo album, I loved Volume 1 of "From a Room," and not to disappoint, Stapleton does something different yet again. This is the kind of growth and versatility that separates the wheat from the chaff. Volume 1 leaned towards the folkier and bluesier side of things, although Stapleton's R&B voice always kept the sound in a southern soul vein that would sound familiar to fans of Dan Penn. Volume 2 turns the volume up. This isn't just more of the same, and it isn't just a follow-up to Traveller, although frankly, I'd have been happy with that too. No, Stapleton is recording the kind of album here that fans of the Drive-By Truckers are likely to enjoy. I could hear Chris getting on stage with Patterson and Mike, and having a blast playing Midnight Train to Memphis, and a couple other tracks sound almost Cooley-esque. Not everything here rocks that hard, and Chris's voice is always more R&B than anything else. There's always the right amount of twang, but my basic point is that Chris Stapleton looks like the kind of musician who isn't going to stand still. You can put this up against Volume 1, and it actually sounds like a different album. In all likelihood, Chris has had his moment of fame. If the world were fair, he'd stay in the spotlight as he continues to explore every kind of music he wants to sing and play. Popular tastes are probably too fickle for that. I'm here for the long haul. Wherever Chris's genius takes him, I'll keep listening. I wonder where he goes next. Further listening: This one really makes me think of Pierce Edens. ... show more

  • Warped
Four stars because it’s a great album that was packaged professionally. The reason it didn’t get five stars is because the album itself was noticeably warped. I have it under pressure and hopefully with time it will flatten out.

  • Great music!
I love the sound of Chris Stapleton's voice. I'm unable to pick just one favorite song, because I love all of them. Great song writer and singer!
