  • Great product, even refurbished
I bought this refurbished and was a little nervous, but not enough to pay full price. It looks and works like new and I'm very happy with the purchase. This was for my 4th grader and I wanted a dictionary with enough words so we wouldn't have to buy a new one in a year or two. For a young reader I especially love the speaking feature which reads the word for you. It only reads it if you push a button, so that's optional. It does, however, read out every letter that you type in, which is fine if you're at home. At school, you'll have to use earphones or turn the volume off. I also like the exercise function, which quizzes the kids on spelling words (which you can enter into your own word list - up to 80 words) or the game function, where they can play games such as hang man to guess the words from the spelling list, the SAT word list or the general dictionary. If you use the general dictionary to draw words from for the games, be prepared for some surprises, I have gotten several words I didn't know existed. BTW, all "games" are spelling type games, so you won't mind your kids playing them. 4 stars only because the screen is the bluish screen as shown in reviews about other Franklin products, a little hard to see. ... show more

  • Helpful gadget
It is easy to use, user friendly. My only dislike is that it isnot able to pronounce many words. That was my main reason of this purchase was to have something help mw with the correct pronounciation of words.

  • Love/Hate - I love the product
Love/Hate - I love the product, but I hate that I keep having to reset it. What i did was order another one from a completely different vendor, and even different model number. Holding down the power to reset does nothing, it freezes up... Still the same result. If the manufacture is reading this, please contact me. ... show more

  • I really like this speaking electronic dictionary
I really like this speaking electronic dictionary. The phonetic pronunciation of the word is clearly shown unlike a more expensive electronic dictionary that I had purchased from Amazon previously. At first I was unhappy at the low level of the volume of the speaking feature of this device ( as were many of the other buyers of the MWS-1940), but that was simply solved with an audio splitter, now the audio from the computer goes to the spitter as does the audio from the 1940 then from the splitter through my computer speakers. I can control the level to the same level as my computer since the device has a volume control of its own. I give it 5 stars! ... show more

  • best I could find, but need voice recognition
would like to find a dictionary with voice recognition so my dyslexic friend could just speak the word to retrieve it.

  • Usable
It only speaks the head words in human voice. The definition are in electronic voice. The screen is reflective and hard to see in a bright room.

  • Talking Dictionary
I bought this item because I am a special education teacher for grades 3-6. There are times when students need to look up words in the dictionary and it is such a daunting task that they give up before they get started. With the electronic talking dictionary, they ask me to use it to look up words. It is great for my low level reader and beginning reader because it will not only read the words, but the definition also. The students and I are like it a lot. ... show more

  • Didn't work in 2 weeks...
I had ordered this for my 5th grade son to help him for his reading and vocabulary mainly because of pretty good reviews. However, my son said the definitions from this dictionary was bit complicated and difficult for 5th grader to understand. But I kept encouraging him to use and get used to it because I believed he just might not get used to it. But he still had preferred to use my 10 years old electronic dictionary. But the worst thing happened was that this dictionary got broken within 2 weeks after my son had started using it. (even barely used!) Thankfully I could return this and will look for a better dictionary for my kid. ... show more
