Description

"Entertaining, enlightening and disturbing." - Ira Glass The immersive, captivating untold story of the mass radicalization of the Republican Party in the aftermath of January 6, 2021, entrenching the political power of a radical right-wing movement dedicated to dismantling democracy itself. Inspired by Donald Trump’s election lies, a growing movement of grassroots activists mobilized around the country to pick up where the insurrection left off, laying the groundwork to succeed next time where Trump had failed to keep himself in power. But their own success in taking over and purging the Republican Party became their undoing as it drove away moderates and supplied the Democrats with a winning message in the 2022 midterms. Still, the MAGA Republicans proved uninterested in learning from that defeat, only becoming more extreme, divisive, and dead set on returning Trump to power. Washington Post national political reporter Isaac Arnsdorf has spent years at the forefront of reporting on this growing movement. Drawing on extensive, exclusive on-the-ground reporting around the country, and deepened by historical context, Arnsdorf has produced the defining journalistic account of the origins, evolution and future of the MAGA movement. Combining critical and rigorous reporting with the intimacy and complexity of a novel, this book is unlike any other in the decade since Donald Trump convulsed and transformed American politics. Finish What We Started tells the story of the ordinary Americans driving this change, who they are and where they came from, what motivates them, and what their movement means for the survival of American democracy. • Surprisingly even-handed
Steve Bannon recommended it so I took the bait. Many hard-core MAGA folks will quickly dismiss Arnsdorf's book because of the obvious acceptance of the mainstream narrative concerning the 'steal' and the 'insurrection', after all he does write for the Washington Post! However, that 'bias' notwithstanding, the book is surprisingly forthright and one could also say, even-handed. The highlighted individuals are quoted but not necessarily commented on by the author and the reader is left to weigh their words which I find to be an unusual trait in partisan political commentary. All in all, I would recommend this book as a honest attempt to record and recount the ascendence of the populiost movement known as MAGA. ... show more

  • The end of democracy?
Good read that occasionally gets bogged down in minuet details that may bore readers. A book that shows how democracy can die in broad daylight.

  • Title Over Promises…Book Under Delivers
The title of the book appears to be election-year political propaganda. The book describes Steve Bannon’s political philosophy and opinions. It profiles a few people who are MAGA movement true believers. The Precinct Strategy is described/explained. The Precinct Strategy’s success in allowing the MAGA movement to take control of Republican Party operations at the County and State level is exemplified. All of this seems to describe rough party politics that is in line with the history of our democracy. The author has written excellent summaries of interviews and research findings for the subject individuals and described electoral successes and failures of MAGA/nonMAGA Republicans. Conflating the excellent writing into a title that includes “….Ground War to End Democracy” goes well beyond advertising (blank ….expletive deleted). ... show more

  • Must read. Superb story-telling of the rise and danger of MAGA.
Arnsdorf tells the story of the rise of MAGA and its threat to our democracy through the words and deeds of regular folks swept up in the Precinct Strategy. Trump himself is a minor character. The stars of the show are the real people he reports on -- with supporting roles played by Bannon and others. ... show more

  • Riveting & Revealing
Major players in the MAGA movement (like Steve Bannon) are well known & their influence on the Republican Party is substantial. In this timely & important book Washington Post Reporter Isaac Arnsdorf profiles some of the movement’s supporting players, ordinary citizens involved in the movement at the grass roots level. He introduces the Strategist (Dan), the Enthusiast (Salleigh) & the Misfit (Kathy), documents their personal histories, & traces their activities in the aftermath of the 2020 election. A fascinating, revealing & disturbing read! ... show more

  • Excellent read
Instructive glimpse into the right wing’s strategy to convert the Republican Party into 100% MAGA serving as a place for nonvoters and disaffected voters left and right.

  • Intellectual dishonesty with zero integrity
From the jump this book is full of word choices meant to manipulate the reader's view (attack, insurgents, and many more). This is not only pandering, but shows a deep level of attempted manipulation, along with a healthy dose of projection. Grift is bad, dishonest grift is worse, manipulative grift is the mark of unintelligence. ... show more
