  • Just pulled a set of blown Felpro gaskets that failed after 34000 miles
I have replace head gaskets on six 2.5 Subaru engines in the past year. I had been purchasing a multi-layer metal gasket with a Viton coating from an independent Subaru repair shop for about $140. The cost of the gasket is minimal compared to the labor of pulling the engine to replace the heads. These Felpro head gaskets appear to have design similar to the 'NASCAR designed gaskets' that I had been purchasing and have a coating that is supposed to handle 'some' imperfection in the head and block surface preparation. It will take some time before the performance of these gaskets is known, but the price was attractive enough for me to test it on a car that I will drive personally. The three missing pieces that you may want to pickup in addition to this kit are the O-ring for the oil addition tube, a water pump gasket that you will need if you removed the water pump to prepare the top of the block and the 'donut gasket' and spring bolts for the exhaust system. ******** Update 3/20/2014: I have just been overhauling ANOTHER Subaru 2.5L with a blown head gasket. This one had the timing belt changed at 132,000 and now at 166,xxx it was beginning to overheat and use coolant - classic signs of a blown head gasket. I pulled the engine and pulled the head and to my dismay, saw that the head gasket was the very same blue Felpro gasket that I had installed on a different car 2 weeks ago. I assume that the head gasket and timing belt were changed at the same time so the gasket had failed in only 34,000 miles! I have been unable to find the 'good' head gaskets on Amazon.com so I went to my normal source - an independent Subaru Repair facility in Seattle and ordered 2 sets of the 'good' Multi Layer Steel (MLS) gaskets for $108 per set plus shipping. (You still need all the other gaskets that are in this Felpro set with the exception of the head gasket) I'm going to pull the heads off the engine that was just rebuilt 2 weeks ago and replace the Felpro gaskets with the Six Star MLS gaskets as well as replacing the blown Felpro gasket on this engine. If you look closely at the website from this shop in Seattle, you will see some pictures of 'aftermarket head gaskets' that are blown. Those 'aftermarket gaskets' are the same color and exhibited the same failure as the Felpro gaskets in the engine that I just tore down. I had been warned by other Subaru enthusiasts to 'use only the Six Star' gaskets or you will end up doing the job again, but I assume that with a name brand like Felpro I would be safe. Bad assumption! Even after replacing head gaskets in Six 2.5L engines this year, it still take me about 16 hours of labor to pull the engine, put the correct surface on the block and head, replace the gaskets and put everything back together again. I certainly don't want to do this every 34000 miles so I am going to go ahead and pay the big premium for the 'good' gaskets. Bottom line: Buy this kit and use all the gaskets WITH THE EXCEPTION OF THE HEAD GASKET to rebuild your engine. Purchase a WATER PUMP GASKET and an Exhaust flange 'DONUT GASKET' and SPRING BOLTS for the exhaust system to replace the bolts you will likely need to cut.. Purchase a slide hammer blind hole bearing puller to pull the hollow dowels out of the block (I found one at the local store of a Nation Wide discount tool chain for $75 - 20% discount). Removing the dowels and water pump allows the surface can be prepared properly so you can achieve a uniform, flat surface. A couple tips on the engine to trany bolts - if you remove the drivers side axle it is MUCH easier to get at the lower bolt on the drivers side. You need to mark the position of your camber adjusting bolt (Top bolt attaching the axle hub to strut) with a white paint pen so you can put it back together just as you disassembled it. Remove the camber adjustment bolt, loosen the lower axle-hub/strut bolt and you can tip the axle hub enough to allow the axle to pull out from the trany. You will need a 7/32 punch to remove the pin that holds the axle in place - there is one sold on Amazon for about $10 that has a little nub on the end of it to go into the spring pin. When you are putting it back together make SURE that the spline is aligned correctly. If you are 180 degrees off you will be able to get the pin started but then it will be stuck, your 7/32 punch should slide in and out easily BEFORE you put in the spring pin. There is also an engine/trany bolt that is just below the starter on auto transmission vehicles that is almost hidden even after removing the starter - if your engine won't separate, check for that bolt. If you are pulling the water pump make sure you replace it with an OEM ASIAN pump with the 'stamped sheet metal impeller'. Since the water pump is fairly easy to get at I generally don't change it when I change the timing belt (like I do on Hondas). Good luck rebuilding your Subaru! ... show more

  • Made in Japan, fit great
These gaskets worked great on my 2001 Subaru Legacy GT. The head gaskets have 3 layers of stainless steel and was of better quality than the OEM head gasket I removed. Surprisingly they were made in Japan. This does not contain head bolts, I reused my existing ones (which is fine on these Subaru's, so long as the bolts aren't damaged). The tightening sequence is: Step 1.....22 ft/lbs Step 2.....51 ft/lbs Step 3.....loosen all 180 in reverse order of tightening Step 4.....loosen all an additional 180 Step 5..... bolts 1 and 2 only 25 ft/lbs Step 6.....bolts 3,4,5,6 132 in/lbs Step 7.....tighten all bolts 80 to 90 degrees Step 8.....tighten all bolts 80 to 90 degrees the order is of the bolts is: TOP 316 524 BOTTOM I used a Haynes manual and the web to guide my repair. I'm not sure if I can post a link to the site I used, but google search: "2000 my obw in car head gasket replacement". I got some great tips from there. Timing is easy (on the SOHC engine), just line up the 3 notches (not the arrows). The notches are not at top dead center, they are at middle center. This confused me at first but that's the way it is. I was able to do it with out removing the engine, but it was hard to get the heads in position with out messing up the new gasket. I used rubber bands to hold the bolts and had someone put the gasket in after I lined it up. I had to hit the drivers side fender with a hammer to put a small dent to allow for the #4 bolt to have enough clearance. You can't see the dent with everything back in the engine. Good luck! ... show more

  • Valve stem seals are crap
Hope the head gaskets hold but the valve stem seals were not good. they were scraping the bottom of the barrel when they threw these in the package. 8 or 9 different seal numbers on top where there is suppose to be 8 for exhaust and 8 for intake. few where out of round and the seal material looked deformed on a few. to much work to replace so I bought a set from autozone. ... show more

  • Would be 5 star but...
Would give 5 star but they left out several gaskets. Called Fel Pro & told them about it & they said they’d do better next time I order from them. Otherwise they make great gaskets.

  • Felpro are the best gaskets on the market
The shipping box arrived with a big rip along the side of it. Lucky all the pats were inside. It should have been double boxed by shipper. Gaskets are the best that you can buy. No china rubbish.

  • Complete gasket set for Subaru 2.5 L engine
I bought this kit as part of an engine transplant job for a 2002 Subaru with a 2.5 L engine. I don't have a way to assess the quality of the parts, but Fel-Pro is a respected brand and all is well after several hundred miles. The head gaskets in the kit are of multi-layer steel (MLS) construction, and the results of my research indicated that they were an upgrade to the occasionally troublesome OEM gaskets that came with Subarus of this vintage. All of the components I used (head gaskets, intake gaskets, exhaust gaskets, valve cover gaskets and grommets, valve parts (used by machine shop when refurbishing the heads)) fit well and seemed to be of high quality. There were some parts (throttle body gaskets, fuel injector gaskets) that I recognized but didn't use, and others that I didn't recognize, so I have a small stock of unused parts. Perhaps these kits are designed to be used by professional mechanics who would presumably know what all the parts are for, but I would have appreciated some type of identifying information. My overall impression is that the kit has every gasket that would be needed to do a complete gasket job on an engine. I was pleased with the completeness, fit-and-finish, and price of this kit. ... show more
