This game was a lot of fun. More so than I had thought it would be. The game has several things controlled by an app, but the players still do manage several things as well, so it isn’t just sitting back while the game plays itself. The artwork is very nicely done, the spiral adventure book is solid and so much nicer to use than map tiles (shame Gloomhaven), and the story elements are all narrated should you wish to let them be acted out for you. Amazingly immersive. This game has really allowed my family to dive in and play. Spending hours and days together is the greatest gift and this adventure provides just that. We had a ton of fun as always, but lots of rules were unclear and it would have been nice to have access to a more thorough set of rules like they did for Mice and Mystics, maybe via pdf or Web site, since it is a huge cost to make all the rule books (pretty though they are). I am an avid board game player so who wouldn't pass up the opportunity to be a pirate?? Played it for our family game night and had an absolute blast!!! From having the "mad lib" style pirate names to trying to decide what route we should take, and then added the hollers and screams as we fought other pirate ships back to back lol The game is beautifully drawn and the best part is the free APP!! Whoever does the voices deserves a raise cause it draws you into this world and you believe you really are a pirate. This is a def keeper for families to own. ... show more

This is one of my all time favorite tabletop games. Like other Crossroads games from Plaid Hat, the main point is cooperation, but there's also the opportunity for a bit of backstabbing (you're playing a pirate after all). Every playthrough is different, even when playing the same story. The end objectives may be the same, but the journey varies each time with different characters and random events so that there is some good replayability. The game is app driven, which I usually don't like, but the app for this game is so well done. It adds so much to the game with ambient sounds, sound effects, and well done voice-overs. The app is actually a website, so it runs from pretty much any device with a browser but also has an offline mode (voice-overs require HTML5 support and an internet connection). The game doesn't take itself too seriously. There are a lot of jokes and a few fourth wall comments. Fans of the Dead of Winter series or other games from Plaid Hat will not be disappointed with this one. ... show more

So after my unboxing and being only able to play the solo variant of this game so far. This game is very sound!! I cant say enough good things about the quality of the components. The rulebook is light on the reading and easy to follow and surprisingly only a few pages long. The gameplay is cooperative campaign styled based and the website/app assisted part runs seamlessly with no problems so far for me. You might think the corny voice overs and mad lib characterizes sheets are setback but in all honesty if you love the pirate theme it makes it all the more charming and complete. I would say this would serve as a brilliant gateway game to the RPG world. You play collectively and so far I'd say difficulty is well balanced but that doesnt mean it cant seem challenging or easy at times. The flipping of the campaign book can be slightly tedious, however it gives that choose your own fate/adventure feel to the game Cant wait to get my group going on their first campaign. 5 star quality and gameplay through and through. ... show more

We played as a family with our 4th grader and kindergtener. Our kids needed a little help understanding the mechanics, but the story was great for everyone. It was great to have a cooperative game instead of playing against each other. We were sad when it was over, because we wanted to keep going.

This was a random purchase during a sale and honestly, was a fantastic purchase. I wasn't expecting the app but I can honestly say it's the highlight of the whole experience. The game is a 3 hour narrative adventure. Think DnD but far less involved and the DM is the app, which reads every bit of dialogue and keeps track of all of your decisions until you reach a conclusion. If you have a few friends and are looking for a game for board game night, you can't go wrong with the 3-4 hours you'll spending cackling or eye rolling at the madlib backgrounds each player made for themselves. ... show more
