Description

Fail Safe (DVD)George Clooney stars as a U.S. fighter pilot mistakenly commanded to start a nuclear war with Russia. Now he must be stopped--at any cost--to avert Armageddon in the chillingly realistic movie Fail Safe. Colonel Jack Grady (Clooney) commands a fighter squadron ordered to destroy Moscow with nuclear warheads as a result of a glitch in a military computer. With the help of a translator named Buck (Noah Wyle), the President of the United States (Oscar winner Richard Dreyfuss) must join forces with the Russians to end the deadly threat. If all other efforts fail, the President promises to send one of his most important generals, Warren Black (Harvey Keitel), on a mission that could millions--including both the President's and general's families. Also starring Brian Dennehy and Hank Azaria, this riveting drama, originally broadcast live, shows civilization dangerously close to annihilation despite measures deemed Fail Safe.]]>

  • Very good
The acting was great. Considering this was originally broadcast live, the actors did a great job. I was on the edge of my seat the entire time.

  • A more streamlined remake
I was excited to watch this when it first came out. I liked the original movie because I child of the 70s and living through the tail end of the cold war and in the computer era it felt so relevant. Also being a theater nerd in high school I was awed that it was aired live like over broadcast TV. This Failsafe has actors that are more widely known and seen by younger generations. Think of Failsafe is an adult version of that 80s movie of War Games but where the ending is not all cheers and high 5s. Thermonuclear war is averted but at a terrible cost. ... show more

  • Great Movie that I highly recommend for those who like drama
This is the movie Fail Safe made in the year 2000, the original I believe was made in 1964 and featured a young Larry Hagman, Henry Fonda, Walter Matthau and a young Dom DeLuise. The remake of Fail Safe 2000 was broadcast in the early part of the year 2000 on Network TV. Hosted by none other than Walter Kronkite and starring Richard Dreyfuss, Noah Wyle, Brian Dennehy, Jonh Diehl, Norman Lloyd, Bill Smitrovich, Sam Elliot, James Cromwell, Hank Azaria, George Clooney, Harvey Keitel and Don Cheadle. Very good movie and filled with high drama, if this is the type of movie you like. Shows how a single failure in an electronic, not mechanical as referred to in the movie, component can cause the worst decisions a leader will have to make and as always the innocene have to pay. Starring George Clooney, Brian Dennihy, Don Cheadle, ... show more

  • Great homage to a timeless story.
Don't compare it to the original. As a movie, it's engaging. The acting, superb. The important thing to remember is that the actors themselves are not hiding their emotions. The CHARACTERS they're playing are. Those characters were trained not to show emotion. One of the things I liked about this is that in practically every scene, we're shown what it's like to be JUST below the boiling point, trying to hang on to yourself, for fear of exposing your frights to your colleagues. Below the surface, everyone is thinking to themselves, if I lose it, everybody loses it. By all means, please watch the original if you haven't. The point of this movie is to remind people to watch the original. ... show more

  • An excellent homage to television's golden era,... and a gripping Cold War thriller
The era of live television drama (other than awards shows and sporting events) is a relic of the previous century. What was once standard procedure during the 1950's went the way of the dodo bird when recording technology improved. In Spring 2000, CBS decided to harken back to those fondly remembered earlier days with a remake, performed completely live, of the epic Cold War thriller, "Fail Safe". "Fail Safe" was an early 60's novel about a horrific error of miscommunication from Strategic Air Command (SAC) that sends a bomber wing on its way to bomb the Soviet Union. It was made into a 1964 film starring such acting heavyweights as Henry Fonda, Walter Mathau and Larry Hagman. (Note: the book also served as the inspiration for the better known black comedy, "Dr. Strangelove"). In 2000, CBS threw together another heavyweight cast. This group included George Clooney (as the very start of his Hollywood kingpin status), Richard Dreyfuss, James Cromwell, Harvey Keitel and Sam Elliott. It was even introduced by legendary newsman, Walter Cronkite. The broadcast was filmed in black and white, to recall that bygone era. To facilitate the live broadcast, the producers also built in script and set-design 'fail safes' to keep the narrative flowing if one of the cast members jumped ahead by mistake. The end result was a very compelling Cold War tale that would please fans well-versed in the genre as well as hold the interest of newcomers. (Note: a few months later, CBS took another stab at live television with a remake of "On Golden Pond". It was not as warmly received and CBS ended its attempt at the live television renaissance). It took many years before the DVD of this version of "Fail Safe" was made available in the United States (it was available almost right away overseas). Still, it was worth the wait to add it to my collection. I recommend other fans of the literature and productions of this era to add it their own libraries. ... show more

  • Very classical movie
Not much to say here. It’s a classic Stanley Kubrick suspense movie about what”could” happen in a certain progression of specific events.

  • An interesting experiment which did not really work
My interest lay in the fact that this was a live broadcast, aiming to recapture US television back in the early 60s. Alas, it did not come across that way. There are so many different camera angles that it just came across a regular film, although in black and white. It makes for an interesting comparison with the 1964 film. It's about 20 minutes shorter. The principal cuts are the opening dinner party with Groeteschele, the showdown with Cascio's parents and the Cascio/Brogan incident. One significant (and improving) change is the substitution of Grady's son for his wife in the final radio communication. It's convincingly acted all round and Dreyfus captures the horror of the NYC decision better than Fonda, although I prefer Fonda's performance overall. Equally, I prefer Matthau to Azaria in the portrayal of Groeteschele. For these reasons, and the additional scenes, I'd recommend the original rather than this remake. ... show more

  • An old classic and still good
This is and old classis. I've also seen the newer version which includes George Clooney. It too is good. I'll rewatch both again but personally lean towards the older one.
