With the EMAD System Pack, there's no limit on how you can hone your tone. The included EMAD batter and reso heads put your bass drum's attack, focus, and sustain in your hands, allowing you to completely customize your sound. The EMAD clear bass batter features a single ply of 10mil film, with the ability to adjust sustain, thanks to two interchangeable damping rings. On the other end, the EMAD reso head boasts an offset 4" microphone port in a single ply of 10mil film, plus a foam damping ring around the port's external edge for greater control of your overtones. Initial impressions: Evans quality as expected. Heads sit perfectly flat on my bearing surfaces. Little to no popping from head seat during initial tensioning In use: The EMADS damper on the port of the reso head significantly cuts down on ringing overtones from the resonant head. I am able to rely on this head without my DW EQ pillow in the shell, but the reso head may benefit from a moon gel opposite the port to control the remaining overtones. The reso head has a deep tone that is very focused. Tuning notes: The resonant head sounded great with my traditional approach of finger tightening all the reso lugs and then placing my full weight on the hoop at each lug and taking the slack out by finger tightening each lug. The resonant head is a single ply 10 mil head and definitely exhibits a bit more lively tone as you would expect from a single ply head. This head only needed slight tweaks to get all the lugs tuned and the EMADs damper helped tame the overtones. Tighter reso tunings still sound good if you want to get into bebop territory with your kick, but this “minimum tension” approach gives a deep fundamental that adds a ton of weight to the mix when recorded. The batter head is also a single ply of 10 mil film with an EMADs damper around the perimeter of the head. The head ships with the small damper foam installed, but Evans supplies a large damper foam and a batter patch in the box. I used the same minimum tension approach on the batter as I described on the resonant head and found the single ply batter head to sound a bit too thin with the small damper. The beauty of the EMADs system is how easy it is to change the damper. The large damper gave the batter head the weight I was looking for. Coming from an Aquarian Super Kick II, which is similar to the EMADs except with two plies and an internal damper, I was surprised by the increased beater attack from the Evans head. The beater has a very strong snap even with the felt facing the head. These heads sound great with an open shell and I opted to leave my EQ pillow out for a few shows to see how this combo performs in a band context. Cons: The port on the reso head is very small and, with the EMADs retainer, it is very difficult to get a kick mic into the port and into the shell any farther than a couple inches. I may experiment with using an external batter mic instead of the traditional in-shell mic. Pros: While internally micing the kick is difficult through the port, the resonant head has a great tone that will be well served by an external FET large diaphragm condenser in the studio. Other pros are just the overall quality of the Evan set. Perfect fit in my drum’s bearing edges, outstanding tuning stability right out of the box and excellent execution of the damping system.

5 Stars ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Evans is a very respected brand of drum heads that has been in business a LONG time. They know how to make a good product. It all comes down to your needs & personal preferences when selecting heads. The batter head is a single ply head with their “EMAD” system that has a plastic ring that goes around the head that provides a holder for one of 2 different muffling foam rings they include to control the head resonance & sound. You can try the head with or without the foam rings to see what sound works for your playing & musical style. They also include a vinyl round sticker to reinforce the area of the head where the beater hits. Again, this is optional, and you may or may not want to use it , but since this is a single ply head, I would recommend using it to extend the life of the head, especially if you like to use a hard beater. The reso head is a good looking head with a small port that gives a different sound than a non ported head. The port is also a good place to put a mic 🎤 for recording or live gigs. You also can put your drum 🥁 logo, or name or band logo on this head, as they leave it mostly blank. These are heads good enough for professional use, but are affordable even for garage band budgets. Emad has been a go to for controlled bass sound for years. I hadn't swapped out my bass drum head in a long time so decided to grab this kit and give it a go. Awesome! It's tight and controlled without having to really muck about much with tuning or anything like pillows, etc. One quick tip, don't be afraid to crank that front head down a bit. It's better with a little tension I think. One of the mistakes drummers often make is not enough tension on that front head and it really helps this system sound great.

Full disclosure I'm not interested in a thump bass drum sound (typically I like a full a bit ringy and higher pitched). Though I'm not opposed to Evans heads (have used them now and then), I always go back to Remo, as they are the heads I've used over the years and I'm comfortable with them. IMHO the quality is equally good on both. What attracted me to this system was more of flexibility. Where I typically use a Fiberskyn powerstoke (pinstripe type) head I have situations where I need to back off volume and sound due to a smaller room, a recording situation, music style etc. I put these on an older ludwig 22" bass drum from the late 70's that is wrapped in what they called Black Panther a naugahyde type product that is thicker than normal plastic wrap. In fact, because of this and the age of the drum I generally use a Remo classic fit head, that gives a little more room for seating on the drum. The first thing I noticed about the heads in general was that heads seated nicely on the drum... not as roomy as the classic fit, but better than the standard remo head on the drum. The reso head is fine. I don't need a hole because my bass drum mic is inside of the drum and sounds great but its black and looks kind of cool. Because of the foam around the hole it dampens it a bit for me, not a huge issue and really doesn't matter when I'm going thru the board) The batter head is 10mil the same as my remo, and without either of the two foam rings installed I would say it compares nicely to the PS3. The smaller foam ring, still leaves a good part of the ring and boom but is enough that in a lower volume situation it still sounds similar to what I want. The larger foam starts to bring in the thump a bit, but since I tune up the head still sounds fairly good for those super low volumes. With it, I tuned it up higher and played bop in a jazz trio and I really like the staccato bouncy sounds I could get out of the drum. The down side to this for me was though, when not installed on a drum, the rings went in and out effortlessly, when they were tuned up it was not as easy and certainly was more time consuming getting them under the plastic and centered. I was hoping that this was going to be something I could change on the fly, so when I'm playing with a band that mixes up the playlist and genres, I could adjust out bass drum sounds and volume. Between sets isn't an issue at all, and so if I do a set of dinner music and then switch up to dance it works well. All in all, I think its a good system, that I'll use, but I'll have to bring my external adjustable muffler to those gigs I have to change drum sounds quickly.

This drum head is very versatile, they give you a couple combinations of felt rings to put in the head to determine how muffled you want it. this is great for the sound and makes any bass drum sound 100x better. The front head also has a ring around the port which helps all the bit more. the port is a good size for most mics, though results may vary as some mics be a tad bigger. Overall, you cannot go wrong with EMAD and this is no exception.

Ordered this to try and get the same sound out of my cheaper bass that my friend has out of his expensive bass. This definitely stepped up my outdoor to a more crisp solid bass that doesn't deflect at all. I'm a step above his sound so I'm happy. Would br nice if they protected it more so shipping doesn't mess these up. They had a slight bad spot but it was obviously from shipping. Other than that these are amazing and highly recommended
