Great first book for people learning the bass. I play and teach many woodwind and brass instruments and I dabble with the violin, so I have a good idea about what makes for a good book to learn from, and this fits with my philosophy very nicely. This book starts with open strings and gradually introduces notes which require using fingers on the strings. It also starts with pizzicato (plucked) playing so the student gets comfortable just making sounds on the instrument before it introduces the use of the bow. This book has clear explanations of what to do and good pictures to demonstrate. An excellent first book! ... show more

    • A Good Place to Start
This is a good beginner book for the Double Bass instrument, I'm pleased with how easy it was to pick up the basics. Like I said it is a beginner book and only went over a couple of scales, the D and C major scales I believe. It also comes with a CD and DVD to help advance your skills by playing along(CD) but I haven't used it. The DVD is to show how to sit and hold the instrument and things of that nature but not necessarily how to finger or play the notes. The book does a good job explaining this though. It is still worth the purchase and I would recommend it to anyone who wants to learn how to play this instrument. ... show more

    • 3rd grade starting bass lessons
This is the book my son's orchestra teacher asked us to get, and it's the same book that his friends bought at a physical store. There is no CD/DVD in it, because thats apparently the older book (which has the same info, just adds the cd).

This program takes the beginning string player through the basics nice and slowly. Plenty of familiar tunes interspersed with the exercises. My teen and I are taking orchestra class together using this book, and I think we're doing well.

    • Excellent ramp-up for a student with experience
I came from already having learned two other stringed instruments. This book moves at a nice speed from the super basics into more challenging material to grow your skill set. Highly recommend.
