Description

The key to tasty coffee, in general, is even extractions. Making sure there isn't some coffee that is being over extracted, causing bitter flavors, and some that is being under extracted, causing acidic flavors. This is all the more important in espresso, where everything from water contact time to beverage size is concentrated down, exaggerating any unevenness. The unfortunate truth of making espresso at home is that you really do get what you pay for when it comes to equipment, MATOW espresso stirrer can help compensate for those shortcomings by evenly distributing coffee in the portafilter to promote more even extractions and better espresso. • Round ends are great when using paper filter
I use a paper filter in the bottom of my portafilter, and these round ends, along with knurled handle, make it easy to spin and mix grounds all the way down to the filter without tearing or bunching-up the filter.

  • Lifts and stirs
Handy gadget for stirring ground espresso beans deposited directly into a portafilter fitted with a dosing funnel. Helps break up the small balls of coffee that form with grinding whole beans directly into the portafilter. The loops at the end of the stirrer serve well to lift and stir the ground coffee. We use with a Breville classic espresso maker. Recommended, but not really needed. ... show more

  • Must-have for on demand grinders
The media could not be loaded. This is a good WDT mixer for espresso. But it's an amazing WDT tool for on-demand grinders. If you are mixing in the tamper, this tool has some loops that might be worth clipping off. But that's not my use case- I'm using a fairly large on-demand grinder. It's close to perfect- if I spent an order of magnitude more on the grinder maybe it would be! So instead, I use this $16 tool to make it perfect. Here's how it works: as grinds come out of the chute into your funnel, hold the wdt tool in the path. This breaks the clumps on the way down, and you don't actually need to do other puck prep in my experience. I've had stunning results with this technique- you can check out my video to see what it looks like in practice. To sum up, if you need an ultra fine wdt tool, keep looking. But if you grind on demand, this is a really valuable addition to your kit at a great price point. The materials are perfect, of course. It's just a matter of the exact use. ... show more

  • Cut off the ends and make into perfection
The issue was those loops. I decided to trim off the loop and made the best espresso tool ever.

  • Not for all grinds
I didn't like that it moved a lot of the grinds at once while moving around the portafilter. Maybe the gage of the wire is too thick? I didn't find that the loops on the bottom was an advantage. I tried it on 3 different types of beans and still had the same result.

  • Feels like stirring clumps
Because this WDT tool has the rounded tips, it feels like you’re pushing around clumps instead of breaking it up. This tool does make the channeling problem a little better but I’m still getting major channeling and spewing in my bottomless portafilter. It collects a bit of grinds if you don’t get it a quick brush every day. ... show more

  • The right idea but not exactly what you want.
The fact that you're looking at this product means you probably are trying to find a WDT tool to distribute coffee grounds for more even espresso extraction. You're on the right track. However, you don't want this tool, because the loops at the ends pull clumps of bean around, creating the potential for water channeling anywhere there is a weakness in the puck dredged by the loops. You want something much smaller for WDT or raking. Jam some toothpicks into the end of a cork, and that will be better. Even better, get a tool with even finer needles (0.3mm 0.4mm?) because they will pass through the grounds and distribute them without displacing and dredging out channels. Source: I've been trying different products and approaches for home extraction for months. I bought this, and I don't use it anymore. • YES!
The more pedantic "experts" will tell you that you need to use a device with very fine needles (like acupuncture needle fine) to break up clumps in your portafilter basket. I say - MEH, we're making a cup of coffee here, not performing rocket surgery. A quick whisk of my ground beans and they're as fluffy as all get out. I WILL admit that I might be slightly biased in my opinion, as I'm a total freak for anything knurled. So take my review with a grain of salt...and maybe a couple of asprin. ;) ... show more
