Description

In 1990, Eric Clapton performed 18 nights at one of his favorite venues - the famous Royal Albert Hall in London. During the 18 run of shows Clapton performed with three different line-ups: a rock band, a blues band, and an orchestra. Eric returned to the same venue in 1991 with the same three line- ups and played a further 24 shows. The huge undertaking of rehearsing for performances of three distinctly different genres was made even more challenging by the line-up for the rock shows varying from 4, 9 or 13 band members. Clapton has always played with superlative musicians, and these shows were no exception. The bands included Johnnie Johnson, Jimmie Vaughan, Chuck Leavell, Nathan East, Greg Phillinganes, Steve Ferrone, Ray Cooper, and Jerry Portnoy. Additionally, legendary special guests joined Clapton on stage: Phil Collins in the rock ensemble; Robert Cray, Buddy Guy and Albert Collins for the blues shows. The Orchestral performances were arranged and conducted by Michael Kamen the highly regarded and successful composer who had worked with Clapton previously (Lethal Weapon, Edge Of Darkness). The set list included the epic 30 minute “Concerto For Guitar” that Kamen composed especially for Clapton – released now for the first time. Many of the performances in both years were filmed and recorded. The huge volume of audio and film material from the archive has been painstakingly restored and upgraded by Clapton’s team of Simon Climie (audio production and mixing), producer Peter Worsley (Slowhand at 70 and The Lady In The Balcony), and director David Barnard (The Lady In The Balcony). This remarkable series of shows will finally be given the release that they deserve. A full concert of each genre (Rock, Blues, Orchestral) has been assembled from the hours of material available and will be released on audio (CD, LP, digital) and with an accompanying film on Blu- ray and DVD. The Clapton classics performed with the rock band include “White Room”, “Lay Down Sally”, “Wonderful Tonight”, “Pretending”, and “Layla”. The Orchestral show features a stunning version of “Layla”, plus stand-out highlights of “Bell Bottom Blues”, “Edge Of Darkness”, and “Sunshine of Your Love”. Great covers of “Cocaine”, “I Shot The Sheriff” and “Knockin’ On Heaven’s Door” are also featured. The 14-song Blues set includes standards such as “Sweet Home Chicago”, “Have You Ever Loved A Woman”, and “Key To The Highway”. The limited-edition “Definitive 24 Nights” deluxe box sets include 47 songs and almost 6 hours of music on 6 CDs or 8 LPs and 3 Blu-ray’s. The Rock, Blues and Orchestral shows will also be released as stand-alone concerts on LP and CD. The CD formats also come with the film of the show on DVD.

  • A great set but perhaps a little too much overlap
This review is based on listening to all audio, and watching all of the Rock Bluray and a bit of the Blues disc. This is a mostly great collection that gives a magnificent string of shows at the RAH its just dues. Clapton is in fine form and the musicians who support him are great as well. Presentation wise, the box is nice, the book well made, and the numbered lithograph is very nice, suitable for framing (in fact ... I did just that the day after getting this set, pairing it with the litho from his Nothin' But The Blues set). The video on Bluray is very good. Yes, it's 4:3 ... for the most part. The editors made use of modern 16:9 displays by frequently going split screen to fill a 4K screen. This could have been overdone, but thankfully it's just enough that you don't start to get annoyed at the smaller dimensions. Rock: My favorite so far, with good representation of the excellent material from Journeyman. The first hour or so is especially good. Blues: Pretty good, but if you're really looking for a blues showcase with EC, Nothin' But The Blues is a far better choice. The drawback here (for me) is maybe too much Buddy Guy. Clapton is known for not hogging the spotlight and, to his credit, is more than willing to let others step out front, but I would have preferred more Eric here. Meaning, more of his material. I don't know if the Blues shows were Journeyman-free or not, but I feel adding "Old Love" and "Hard Times" to the Blues shows would have been nice. (Yes, my headline refers to too much overlap ... but the Journeyman tracks are strong and I'd welcome repeat of those). Orchestral: So far, for me, the weakest. A bit turgid. Remove the very long (and brilliant) "Concerto for Electric Guitar" and the very short "A Remark You Made" and the remaining 13 tracks average more than seven minutes each. The bloat isn't always warranted. I'm not too keen on having another long version of "Wonderful Tonight" and don't need a second "Laydown Sally" of any length (maybe not even a first, let's be honest). Again, unfortunate that the Journeyman material is poorly represented in this set (only two). I'm also not sold on both very long and somewhat taxing versions of "Sunshine Of Your Love." It's a little disappointing that "Badge" and a superior version of "Old Love" from the original 24 Nights aren't included here, but one review states "only music that had concert footage would be released," so maybe there was an issue there. But, the performance of the timeless "Layla" will satisfy all fans. A highpoint for sure. As an aside ... in the spring of 1990, shortly before graduating high school, I purchased the Crossroads boxset. Around that same time I tore out of Rolling Stone magazine a recap of the 1990 RAH residency (from the March 22, 1990 issue). That clipping has been in my Crossroads boxset ever since. What I wouldn't have given all those years ago to see the legendary Eric Clapton in London at that time. Well, now I can, three times over. ... show more

  • Clapton was on fire in 90 and 91 - This is a must have set!
Got the box set in the mail today. First off, the packaging is impeccable! Breathtaking box that has all of the goodies. First off, a beautiful photo of Eric. Second, the most beautiful of books you can imagine with great notes from the shows, from the artists involved and from press. The book is very detailed with what you are getting in the set. Third, a very well thought out housing for the CDs and Blu Rays of the 3 different lineups. The Rock, the Blues and the Orchestra. Just a nicely laid out product. We put on the first Blu Ray. The Rock nights. I set up the Surround sound for the ultimate in listening. SO I THOUGHT! THIS TO ME IS IMPORTANT! The surround mix is a disaster! As much as I tweaked, the drums and some of the band are lost! Loads of keys and backup vocals, but just dismal! After a few songs I just set the program from the Blu Ray to the Stereo mix, and it was AMAZING! Everything is rock solid in the mix and even tho it was Stereo, my surround system created a nice bit of surround sound that was 90% better. So, am I upset, and do I feel ripped off? NO! This is simply amazing! We watched, very loudly to the ROCK Blu Ray, and as I was chomping at the bit to get to the Orchestra show, we went there next. (I have to admit, I am so tired of Eric's blues music I could scream. He just plays it very safe, and after watching the rock and orchestral shows here, I am convinced he just doesn't care anymore. I feel he is just phoning it in at this point.) Anyway, the ORCHESTRA shows! Unbelievable performances and the 29-minute CONCERTO FOR GUITAR AND ORCHESTRA is worth the entire price of this set! The performance is incredibly inspired and well worth the 30 year wait for a proper release. I haven't watched the Blues shows Blu Ray, and will probably only watch it once just to do so. As I mentioned above, not my cup of tea. I am sure it will be met with great joy by many. I can't recommend this set enough. Eric was absolutely at his best during these years. His playing and vocals were stellar. He was at a peak!! The set is pricey, but worth it!! I'm glad we pre-ordered this one! ... show more

  • Excellent Sound Quality
This collection of music is fabulous! I have all the Eric Clapton CDs, so I was worried this would duplicate what I already own. It is not. The mix and quality of the recordings are superb. The transitions from one song to the next are also excellent. The cost is a bit expensive, which gave me pause to purchase this product. I have no regrets now that I have listened to the CDs. I have yet to watch the videos. The book is well done and has very high-quality paper and binding. ... show more

  • Great so far
I was drawn to the purchase by the Blu-ray material. The quality is great. I have only watched the Rock so far. But, I’m a little confused, as the original DVD from many years ago was wide screen with a lot of audience and RAH-wide shots. What I have seen so far is a square aspect ratio and no audience or venue views. Am I missing something? ... show more

  • Peak Clapton!
What a sensational set of shows this was! I have the original CD and VHS compilation of these shows from the early ‘90’s and always enjoyed revisiting them, however having 3 complete shows is fantastic!
