We waited almost a month for the seller to get this to us. And, be warned, no tracking was made available. This book was shipped to me in amazing shape, better than I expected. It is pretty close to what I expected it to be, based on reviews I read. I was expecting a bunch of cool things to build that taught electricity and electronics--and it does. I was disappointed when the first experiment required us to go buy some more stuff that is hard to locate anywhere but online. I know it will be worth it to do so, but my daughter and I waited a REALLY LONG TIME to get this book from the seller, so we were already kind of impatient, and now I have to order other stuff before we get to use the book. If you have kids, you know you have a small window of time to capitalize on their excitement, and if you wait too long, they'll be on to something else. ... show more

  • Wonderful!
My son asked for a circuit kit. We purchased one before and though nice, it was pricey for the things it provided. I decided to make my own kit using this book. I cannot say enough good things about this. I have not given it to my 12-year-old yet but he will love it. I read almost the whole book to purchase supplies for the experiments as part of his gift. The book makes the shopping list easy. Although other suppliers are listed as well, I went ahead and ordered everything through Jameco. I learned so much just by reading the chapters to purchase the supplies. Very well done. The book provides a stair-step approach to learning various aspects of electricity which I found perfect for a beginner. It was not overwhelming but I think it will be challenging enough to hold I interest. I love that the author said he wrote this book because he would have liked to have something like it as a child. It not only provides instructions but explains the rationale which I believe will be applicable to future endeavors. ... show more

  • Well written and captivating
My 8-year-old son who is a self professed future engineer and techie cannot put this book down! Shortly after receiving this book after Christmas, he asked me to order basic electronics parts to put together some of the circuits described in this book, and has been working night and day putting together circuits, including a door alarm to ward off intruders into his bedroom. This book seamlessly combines some basic science principles with practical application in a way that all inquisitive minds, young and old, will be able to appreciate.   • Possibly too textbookish to interest kids who are not already motivated
This book could have been infinitely better with a small packet of parts. This is a great catalog of projects which motivated kids can refer to. The pictures are good and the instructions are great. Each project is explained in a step by step manner with a description of what is happening. However, one thing that I felt was unfortunate was that the book expects the reader to go out and acquire all the parts on his own. It seems like attaching a small box of basic parts (an LED, zinc/copper pins, pre-stripped wires, breadboard, etc) would have gone far to really bootstrap a kid receiving this. As it is, the book is great in what it does, which is provide project ideas and detailed information to support motivated kids. However if it increased its scope just a little bit it could be an enormously useful and fun thing. ... show more

  • Step by Step Instructions
My grandson and I like to tinker with electronics. We have several books that start out with the basics and then jump to "magic happens and here's the finished product" with all the intermediate steps left out. This book is a good step by step book with fun illustrations and helpful text. There are a lot of easy projects to keep your interest while you build knowledge. Worthwhile book! ... show more

I purchased this book for my 6-year-old son. We're just on the second project, but he's enjoying the book. Here's what I like: - breakdown of concepts - approachable material for beginners - reads like a textbook, but not as boring! Here's what I'd like to see - quizzes at the end of each project - more product alternatives if suggestions are unavailable Some of the item numbers were no longer available through the supplier.   • A great book for an older student interested in electronics
A book for middle- to high school- students. The projects are well illustrated and the directions are alright. This book, unlike others in this genre, looks for ways to keep projects cheap. I really appreciated that. But, there are inconsistencies in the directions and it seems like some projects were not as well thought through as others. ... show more

  • I bought it for an 11 year old. Not ...
I bought it for an 11 year old. Not a relative. He lives with the grandmother and they have very little. I have maybe more than I should. So my wife and I buy him some clothes, laptop, etc. Bottom line: the kid started doing experiments in the book at 9;30 pm on Sunday night wearing a NASA hot I got for him from a friend of mine who works at NASA.
