I’ll admit, I was skeptical at first because this hot knife rope cutter costs about half as much as most of the others I’ve seen. But after testing it out and even opening it up to take a look inside, I’m genuinely impressed — it’s every bit as solid and well built as the units that cost twice the price. It heats up fast, cuts cleanly, and seals the rope ends perfectly with no fraying or smoke issues. The build quality feels sturdy and professional, with tight connections and a good weight in the hand. I’ve used it on everything from nylon and polypropylene to thicker climbing and utility ropes, and it slices through effortlessly. Honestly, for the price, this tool is a steal. I use this machine for cutting small cord to make bolos. After a few minutes of practice, I was able to get the proper temperature and cutting speed to cut a cord made of cotton/polyester mix. The machine would cut and fuse the ends of the rope perfectly. If I go too slow in pressing the cord through the hot wire, it will melt and require a wire brush to clean off. If I go too fast, the rope will not melt enough on the end to fuse it. All more art than science. This machine has held up well in transport from one location to the next since I keep it padded in a box with other supplies. I highly recommend based on my occasional use over the past 4 months.

This cutter does the job. However, with heavy use cutting poly ribbon for key wristlets, the “gunk” builds up on the heat bar, and is difficult to clean. You need to use it in a well-ventilated area because it creates a little smoke while cutting. I find it just as easy to use a lighter to seal the edges of the poly ribbon.

The Bride is weaving parachord lanyards for charitable distribution to military and first responders and needed something to quickly trim and seal the ends of the cord. This machine does it quickly and easily. I’ve also used it to cut and seal webbing and tie-down straps. If there is a down-side, the heated bar is completely open and extremely hot when being used. Not recommended for kids or families with over-curious animals. The blade heats up quickly and cools quickly.
