The Echo Show 5 (1st Gen, 2019 release) is a fantastic smart display with Alexa that combines functionality and convenience. The compact size fits perfectly anywhere, and the crystal-clear display makes video calls, watching videos, and checking your calendar a breeze. The voice control feature with Alexa adds a touch of smart home efficiency, while the Charcoal color gives it a sleek, modern look. I’d love to try more smart devices from this vendor—excellent tech and great for staying connected! 🗣️📺 ... show more

  • Best overall Echo Show device for most people (except for maybe the Show 8)
Update 11/20/19 I have been using my Show 5 for several months now, and it is working well. I discovered that if I enable the TUBI TV skill that Tubi will show up in my video options. I have book marked PlutoTV and Crackle in the browser, and they both work well. This has greatly increased my video options. But I still can't get Hulu to show up, even though it works well on both of my Gen1 Shows! I still prefer my Echo Spot as my bedside alarm clock, but this works perfectly on my desk and in the kitchen. The screen is pretty small, and I suspect that the new Show 8, with its better sound and bigger screen, will prove to be more popular in the long run. Update 9/19/19 Reading some of the other reviews on the 5, I don't think that a lot of people understand how Echos/Alexa work. They seem to think that the 5 is just a high tech stand a!one alarm clock, which it isnt. One review said that the weather function was inadequate. If that's the case, just enable another one. There are too many for me to count. another said that they returned theirs, and were going to wait for an upgraded version. Alexa is the same on a every device, and is being continual!y updated. One review said the the 5 doesn't have YouTube. It does. It's kind of a kludge, but it works. A lot of reviewers gripe about the ads. I don't even notice them. My wife likes the suggestions, and often responds to them. Amazon sells stuff. If you don't want to see the ads, just don't look at them. A.m.s co.plain about the video capabilities. They are fine, although I can't get Hulu to run on it either (works fine on my gen1). TBH, I prefer to watch them on side screen tv. Or my Fire 10 tablet. But I had watched videos on it, and the interface is fine once you get used to it. But watching a whole movie on a 5 inch screen isn't really ideal. I have decided that the sound is better than it is on the Spot. Maybe a bit better than my 3 gen Dot, but not by much. The Cot actually sounds pretty good. The regular Echos and my 1gen Show both sound better, but all of them are enjoyable to listen to. I still think the Spot is a better alarm clock. The 5 is great for the kitchen, and the Show is in the !living room. That works out well for us. I am retired, but I would have loved to have a 5 on my desk in my office! When I want a spelling, or a definition, or a sum, or to put an event on a calendar, or a news update, or need to know it's one of my staff's birthday, all I would have to do is ask. IMHO, that would be wh ere the 5 would shine. Update 8/14/19 The Show 5 is still working just fine. My Spot has returned to my bed stand, though, as the Show 5 takes up a bit too much room. Its not that the 5 is really all that big. Itv is about the same size as a 1990's era clock radio, but my bed stand is rather small. And I like the clock faces on my Spot better. Several YouTube reviews state that the Spot has been rendered redundant by the Show 5. I disagree. Each fits a unique niche. But I agree that the Spot should not cost so much. The Show 5 is a much better value at the current pricing. Prior to buying this, I already owned a Echo Show and an Echo Spot, as well as a regular Echo and several Echo Dots, so I think it is fair to say that I am familiar with Echo devices and Alexa. My review of the Echo Show 5 will be comparing it to those other devices. The Echo 5 has a fairly small screen, which is about the size of a large smart phone. The resolution is fairly low according to the specs, but that is not readily apparent when viewing in. I can watch the Echo Show screen across the room. With the Echo Spot I have to be quite close to watch it (yes, I watch videos on the Spot. The screen is tiny but it is fine if you have it on your night stand). The Show 5 is somewhere in between. You can see it easily across your desk. It is great on a kitchen counter. It is NOT a small room TV replacement, like the regular Show could be. The sound on the Show 5 is about the same as the Echo Spot. Much better than the gen2 Dot, about on par with the gen3 Dot, but not as good as the regular Echo or the fill size Show. Alexa on the Show 5 is exactly the same as on the regular Echo Show, which is not surprising, as Alexa is in the Cloud, not on your device. It seems to me that the Echo 5 has a somewhat slower response time, but that is REALLY hard to tell. As the devices are cloud based, the response time might well have more to do with the Wi-Fi connection at a certain location in your house than the device itself! Regardless, response times on all of the devices are acceptable on my DSL service. BTW, the Spot does not have the same functionality as the others. It has no browser, so no YouTube. As far as value goes, the Show 5 is by far the best value. It does everything the larger Show can do, for half the money. If you bought it for $50 on Prime day, as I did, its a steal. So is it for you? That depends. If you want a large screen and great sound for your living room or den, then get the full size Show. If you want a bed stand clock, the Spot takes up less room, and I think that its perfect for that role. I REALLY like my Spot! If the Spot and the Show 5 were the same price, I would recommend the Spot. But at a significantly higher price? I am afraid that, without a sizable cut in price, the days of the Spot are numbered! But if you want just one Echo show device, or if you are just entering the Echo community, the Echo Show 5 is by far the best choice. ... show more

  • I LOVE LOVE LOVE MY AMAZON ECHO DEVICES!!
I finally got my first Amazon Echo Show with Alexa. I am kicking myself for not getting one earlier! I have fell in love with these devices and their many capabilities that I bought a dot, 2 Echo Show 5’s an Echo Show 8 and the new Echo Show 8HD! I am loving all the things they do. If you don’t have one and you’re on the fence here is the breakdown, pros and cons: Breakdown: super SUPER easy to use. Plug in the power cord and follow the on screen steps to set up your device to your liking. There are multiple clock faces to choose from, sounds for alerts and you can pick a background or use your photos from Amazon’s photo app. (I also was new to that app and Alexa. Both were super easy to use! My pictures synced faster than any other photo cloud storing app hands down. Plus as a bonus you don’t need to pay for storage. There’s no limit and zero fees!!) Once you’ve set up the Alexa app (I recommend the Smart Life app that’s compatible with smart devices/plugs and Apple Watch!) you just ask Alexa what you need and boom, it’s done! I asked her to calm down my dog and she put on music! I am amazed. You can make shopping lists (No more searching for a pen and paper in my kitchen), Ask for recipes, play videos, surf the Internet, find out the weather, watch your photo albums, make phone calls to anyone who has the same type of device (like most of the world does by now). It’s seamless and I even had my 8 year old set one up because it was so easy. I love the parental control platform it allows for too! Pros: Super easy to set up Beautiful looking with or without the swivel base Amazing picture Great compatibility with phones, smart plugs, Works perfectly with smart devices and apps Better than FaceTime for video calls Loud speakers with excellent sound quality Alexa, Alexa, Alexa! Alexa’s voice recognition is so much better than Siri! Siri can’t understand a thing I say (I don’t even have an accent). If I ask Siri for the weather it gives me traffic. Super frustrating. I think that’s why I was hesitant at getting one of these. Man I wish I knew how much better Alexa is! Everything I ask is instantly understood and taken care of!! Music, calls, drop ins, weather...anything! The value for the price is unbeatable Everything about this device is a Pro!! Cons: It’s constantly listening. But honestly, I don’t worry about that. I’m sure the government listens in and sees things just through WiFi, the Nelson rating TV system, Arbitron ratings in your radios, computer cameras and cellular/mobile devices. This isn’t the only thing out there and really it’s so worth it for everything you can use it for. Besides, anyone that paranoid about what they’re saying is probably on The Hunt with John Walsh. LOL The final analysis: BUY THESE DEVICES!! Get them for each room. Enjoy the capability to make your day to day life easier and more fun! Play music, dance and sing and be silly. Display your photos, try a new recipe and make sure that your prepared for rain, snow or heat. The Echo devices are like having a personal assistant that’s holding a computer screen. So enjoy your new found “tech” if you don’t already have any and you’ll be amazed like me at what these devices can do! ... show more
