Description

In this middle-grade girl-power friendship story, perfect for fans of Moxie, an eighth grader starts a podcast to protest the unfair dress code enforcement at her middle school and sparks a rebellion. Now available in paperback! Molly Frost is FED UP... Because Olivia was yelled at for wearing a tank top. Because Liza got dress coded and Molly didn't, even though they were wearing the exact same outfit. Because when Jessica was pulled over by the principal and missed a math quiz, her teacher gave her an F. Because it's impossible to find shorts that are longer than her fingertips. Because girls' bodies are not a distraction. Because middle school is hard enough. And so Molly starts a podcast where girls can tell their stories, and before long, her small rebellion swells into a revolution. • Great book for pre-teens/young teens heading to middle school
Bought this book for my niece who is going on 11 and picked it up to check it out and couldn’t put it down myself. It’s well written and captures attention quickly, in short segments, like journal entries. I had intentionally sought out some inclusive stories for middle schoolers but was pleasantly surprised at how many subjects this book touched on beyond the struggle of dress codes in middle school. There was great conflict/resolutions about teen/parent relationships, sibling relationships, bullying, LGBTQ & identity expression and discovery, children with disabilities, all things puberty and body confidence, crushes and friendship fallouts in middle school and much more. The author did a great job of writing an authentic middle school experience, I haven’t picked up a YA novel in many years but remember being a teen and thinking many of the “teen books” were corny and obviously fantasy. This was well written to address the issues that are very real to kids at these ages. I also enjoyed the main plot and the confidence and inspiration it can give to teens to positively use their voices & brains to create real changes. It focused on using a podcast, word of mouth, signing petitions, putting up signs, protests and persistence to be heard. ... show more

  • Must read for tweens, teens and parents
I bought this for my middle schooler, who devoured it and then insisted that I read it. Dress codes are an issue that so many kids face, and this story is a great example of how to stand up (or camp out!) and make your voices heard. It's also a good insight/reminder of what it feel like to be a middle schooler, and the struggles that they face. Friendship, communication, supportive parents, activism... I love this book so much that I am going to donate it to our school library! ... show more

  • A new way to think about dress codes
This is a terrific story, told as a sort of collage narrative, weaving podcast into the story. I am a grandmother, and former middle school teacher, and I enjoyed it a lot, although the target audience is grades 6-10. It made me think about interactions I had when I was a teacher, talking with girls about their clothing. Firestone has created interesting characters and a very relatable plot while addressing some of the dilemmas young people face today. Not just dress codes, but also vaping, teasing, friendship issues, inclusion issues, and family drama. At no time does this book preach -- but I believe it will REACH! ... show more

  • Great for grades 6-9
This book is full of short sections, which makes it feel like you are flying through the story. I love that this book isn't just about dress codes, but covers lots of revenant topics to today's middle school/ high school students. Great read for budding activists or anyone who has even felt like people are judging them for just expressing themselves. 5 stars! ... show more

  • phenomenal read
My daughter has obsessed over this book and read it over 7 times- I finally had to try it and I couldn’t put it down. Great story. Some high level content but such a true confidence builder. You be you.

  • Excellent conversation starter for middle schoolers
A friend recommended this book, and my daughter read it (320 pages) in less than 24 hours. We've had so many great conversations about the stories she read about, from the embarrassing situations that arise with puberty to the unfair dress codes that are only enforced for girls, to the black girl who got in trouble for her natural hair. We've talked about "good trouble", speaking up without being disrespectful, and listening to our gut instincts about important issues. This was a perfect fit after a male teacher announced to the class that girls weren't allowed to wear tank tops or shorts because it's "disgusting". The book helped her come to her own conclusions about what's really disgusting. I've read parts of the book and plan to finish it myself. I highly recommend it for any other middle school girl moms out there. ... show more

  • Sharp, snappy, fun, engaging, and an emotional rollercoaster!
Sharp, snappy, fun, engaging, and an emotional rollercoaster! Dress Coded brings a much-needed window into the minefield that is puberty, with all the unfairness that comes with adults judging middle school children for their bodies. This is an invaluable glimpse into body shaming in American schools, and all the weight that school dress codes carry at an already difficult time of life. It's an easy read, and a great starting point for discussing the matter with teens and pre-teens. ... show more
