So I don't make it to the rinse cycle and these are so great! I aso, do not use traditional fabric softenenrs anymore but these will also work with white vinegar! My clothes and towels and blankets stay soft and fluffy and absorbant and all the soap rinses clean out! The Downy ball works the same way it would if I had liquid softener in it. You can also add drops of essential oil in the vinegar of you want your laundry to have a scent. The vinegar smell does NOT make your clothes smell like that & the rinse water washes it clean out. The dryer/even air drying just makes it smell fresh. It makes your clothes last longer and the Downy ball just makes it all convenient.

I bought three Downy Balls from a seller, and they arrived just as expected. I use a portable washer with a 2‑cubic‑foot tub, and I don’t use fabric softener, only vinegar. The problem was that the balls wouldn’t pop open with vinegar during the rinse cycle. I was tired of having to manually time loads or start a separate rinse cycle just for vinegar. Using the detergent compartment wasn’t an option, since vinegar isn’t dense enough and just runs straight through. And because I wash with ¼ cup liquid soap plus 2 tablespoons of baking soda, I don’t want vinegar mixing with the baking soda, they cancel each other out. So, I tried a DIY fix: I took 600‑grit sandpaper and lightly sanded the lip of one ball. At first, I went around it four times, no change. I did four more passes, and that worked perfectly. The ball stayed sealed during the wash cycle, then popped open every time during the rinse. After about 20 loads, I stopped checking constantly. I just timed it so I could confirm right after the wash cycle that it was still sealed, then watched through the three‑minute rinse cycle to see it release. It’s been flawless. Now I only check once a week, usually on Sunday, and it’s still working like a charm. I even tested one of the other balls that I didn’t sand, and it still refuses to open, proving the sanding tweak made the difference.

Great idea. Love the look. But functionality of it isn't the best. It is a it and miss when the ball opens and letting softener out. Lots of times the wash load is completed and the ball is still full, or has alot still left inside of it.

I have used Downy balls in the past when I had a regular washer so knew they were a fun item that my aunt and mom would love especially since I got them the bottles of Downy Soft Unscented Fabric Softener. What my aunt did however was sort of funny. She put liquid detergent in them and when they were through she wondered how they had worked. I told her that her clothes probably were not rinsed since these were for fabric softener and NOT for liquid detergent. She admitted that she didn't know that and I guess I should have given her more information at the start. I just assumed if I sent the softener and the Downy dispensers she'd realize they went together. Anyways after explaining centrifugal force and other scientific matters she now knows how the balls open up in the spin cycle and release the softener into the load of sheets, clothes or towels. Perfect! So you put these (just one) into the washer before you start it. You don't have to wait for the rinse cycle! ~The Rebecca Review P.S. My aunt said these made her flannel sheets really soft!
