  • For the price, it's good as a practice instrument.
The lowest hole is NOT offset so it is more difficult to reach, if one has small hands, than on an Irish flute with an offset D. Low D whistles are usually played with the mid-part of the right hand fingers, which will work when this flute is played like a whistle....but is much harder for me to reach the D notes when played as a flute. It is fine to practice or learn on, as all the notes are there, but I wouldn't play it in a session as it doesn't have the volume and sounds breathy if one had to play with a mic or do a solo. ... show more

  • Needs a key
That's really the only thing I can downgrade it on. It seems to play in tune and the ability to change roles from penny whistle to Irish Flute is wonderful. I am a beginning flautist but I can still work this in flute mode and it has a pleasant, airy, if somewhat plastic tone. It is just that last tone hole. At least it could have been rolled over so it was easier to get to. I've found the easiest grip is to touch that with a pinkie, leaving one finger off, and that does mess with my recorder/penny whistle instincts to have that difference in fingering. One of these days I'll print up a detachable key and see if that makes it more comfortable to play. ... show more

  • It's a good one!
I bought this combination low-D whistle/low-D flute really to learn how to play the rudiments of whistle using a size of instrument whose range I liked. I wasn't expecting plastic to be this good, but the tone is really lovely and ravishing and sweet. I bought it with the transverse flute mouth piece in case I didn't play the whistle mouthpiece well, but as it turns out they both work beautifully. The tone with the whistle mouthpiece sounds slightly different to the tone produced with the flute mouthpiece, so you're really getting two different instruments in one. It's light and pleasant to hold and feels balanced in the hands. ... show more

  • Has both fipple and transverse heads, and it's tuneable!
I just received my low D whistle today, and I'm having a hard time putting it down! Didn't get a lot of joy out of the transverse mouthpiece on first try, but I'm a beginner who needs to work on breath control, so factor that in. But using the fipple head is great; requires more air than a high D, and the lowest notes can be difficult to get a clear sound, but again I'm a beginner and the size and spacing of the fingerholes are quite different from the high D whistle that I'm used to. All in all, I think I got two flutes in one because of the interchangeable heads, and a good deal overall. Ships from Ireland; my shipping ETA was "by June 30" and I got it on the 22nd. Nice. ... show more

  • You need large man hands to play this flute!
I have very large hands for a woman, I wear a mans small dress gloves, but no one mentioned that it takes at least a man’s medium sized hands to reach the base note, that’s 3 octaves of music with All the D’s missing! The other 7 notes are lovely, but make no sense musically because the base note is missing! You should have warned people of this “ size “ factor before selling this item! It’s a shame because it really is a lovely flute or whistle. ... show more

  • Better than expected
Very happy with this low D flute/whistle. It's lighter than I was expecting, but it still seems like solid construction. It has a warm, rich, breathy tone, and I was happy to see how in tune it is on both octaves. I was playing duets with my daughter last night -- she on her regular flute and me on this Irish flue/whistle -- and we were both very much in tune with each other. Can't beat the quality at this price. My only problem is that it will take a little while to get more comfortable with the wider fingering. I can easily finger it (with my average size adult hands) but I can't play quite as fast as I want to at this point. But that will definitely come with time; it's just a matter of developing the muscle memory. ... show more

  • Great whistle that I am incapable of playing
Before you pick this up to learn the low whistle, look up what a Piper's grip is, look down at your weak and pathetic hands, then go by a penny whistle.

  • Love Dixon whistles.
Yeah Tony Dixon Whistles LOVE THEM! This one is exceptional! I love the versatility and the sound is just what i like. I am just beginning to play flute after a few years of playing tin whistle. The configuration and size of the fingering holes are easier for my narrow fingers to cover so already sounding better and fewer bad notes. Only thing was waiting for it to be shipped from the UK. kind of a long wait. ... show more
