  • Surprisingly well designed.
Style: 40-Piece Impact Ready Set Pattern Name: Screwdriver Bit Set
First, this isn't my first driver set/kit. It is just the first kit that is very well thought out. It really starts with the case. The case is as much a part of the tool as any driver. There are so many features it is hard to describe them. The tools fit. The tools are easy to extract. There is extra room. But further, the box for the bits is color coded black while the matching case for the drill bits is color coded yellow. This saves me time when I am taking the tools from the bag--or picking them up off a bench. Another bonus is that the cases snap together and can be held easily in you hand--a very pleasant surprise. And I have unintentionally proven that the cases survive drops without breaking or scrambling or dropping their contents. Even the hinges exceed any I've seen on plastic boxes opening the halves flat and the latches work with your thumb and aren't in the way when open. And the cases can be reconfigured with their dovetail joints! The drivers are also excellent with a good selection. But keep in mind that DeWalt has also thoughtfully configured different tool selections to be ideal for specific crafts. The idea is that drywall guys, plumbers, carpenters, HVAC and others each need a different selection. Finding the correct configuration for yourself may be challenging, since I didn't see any labels that specified trade when I was looking. The kit that I am reviewing has Philips: 7 short #2, 1 short #1, 1 short #3, 6 "long" #2, 1 extra-long #2 with magnetic screw collar. Straight: 2 short 0.280 wide, 2 short 0.247 wide both mic at .047 thick. Robertson (square): 4 short #2, 1 short #3. Torx: 1 short T15, 2 short T20, 3 short T25, 1 short T27, 1 long T20, 1 long T25 Magnetic Hex socket: 1/4 and 5/16 Magnetic hex bit holder to hold the short drivers in a power driver. 3/8 inch socket drive adapter. So this set is ideal for a wide variety of tasks from hanging curtains and blinds (hex socket drivers); building decks (Torx drivers, Phillips drivers); hanging drywall (#2 Philips driver with magnetic screw collar); working on parts of a car or truck, or woodworking. Now there are other features, like a composite shaft on the long drivers and the magnetic collar screw holder that I either don't fully understand or don't yet know how to use every feature. The composite shafts work well, as far as I can test. These bits are lighter than steel shafts, and they supposedly flex a bit, though I don't have a way to measure this. I suspect that they are brilliant improvements for simplifying the machining when they make billions of these drivers. If so, my concern is that they might fall apart with time--sort of like the expensive plastic handles on chisels made in the 1950's didn't make it through the 1980s. I suspect that these bits won't last forever even with care--but then, my battery-powered drill driver won't last forever either. I am already on version 5 or 6 of battery-powered drills and drivers. Now, with brushless motors, LED lights, and powerful, low-weight batteries they seem to be perfected. Couple them with these sets of drivers and drills, and we are so far ahead of the electric drill my Dad had in 1954--we have no idea how good we've got it! However, I still have that drill and it still works! Update: Now I have had this set for some time I can relate two things. First is the "Flat" screw driver bits for straight slot screws didn't last through one screw. The tip was sheared off in the head of the screw! I've never seen anything like it. The other bits have lasted well, though the Torx and Philips patterns look worn after the first screw. The flex shaft bits work but the shaft does not take abrasion well. However, I like the set so much that I am buying a second set. ... show more

  • Great Set
Style: 40-Piece Impact Ready Set Pattern Name: Screwdriver Bit Set
Works well and they seem well made. I think I would end up loosing a bit before it gets a chance to go bad. Plenty of bits will last me a long time. The case is nice and sturdy too.

  • Solid value
Style: 80-Piece Accessory Set Pattern Name: Screwdriver Bit Set
DeWalt is synonymous with good stuff, and this kit is no exception. Yes, there are a lot of #2 phillips bits. That's because Ph#2 bits are an engineering abomination, deliberately designed to cam out in order to limit torque, thus destroying the driver just before it slips out and ruins your workpiece, which is excellent for companies who sell bits, and great for business in general, so they are used everywhere. But I digress. In any case, (intentional!) DeWalt has done the best anyone could of providing a bit kit that will do pretty much anything ordinary. If you're a tradesman, you know what you need ten or twenty of per week, most likely including Phillips #2 bits... For everyone else, this kit is a great start and a good value. For the handyman or DIY guy, you might never need anything else. I added a couple specialty bit sets from Klein, which fit nicely in the small plastic case inside the large DeWalt case. I also threw in another smaller DeWalt bit set, and a compact ratcheting multibit screwdriver. There's more room left, and I already have 90% of what gets used most often in one case. Of course, being DeWalt, all the bits and drills are really nice quality. I do have some complaints, of course... The handle, although large and impressive-looking, seems to have been designed by an inconsiderate midget or something. At 6' 180# I'm not a real beefy guy, and my hand barely fits. The handle seems specifically constructed as a machine to scrape the skin off your knuckles, and if you're a big guy with fat fingers, forget it; you are not going to be able to carry this case by the handle without bleeding. I'll eventually get out the Dremel and do some relieving on the case under the handle, or cut off the damn handle altogether and tie on a rope or something. Not a huge deal but annoying and avoidable. One half star gets removed for that awful handle, and somebody ought to get fired, too, even if he _is_ a midget. The magnet in the magnetic tray is quite weak. I'll probably toss that tray and its clunky, bulky holder for more space in the case, if I can manage to pry it out. I have a couple other bigger better mag trays anyway. Next time, use a nice neodymium or something, DeWalt, but don't include a lame cheap accessory just to take up space. Half star penalty. [Update to add: That magnetic tray is really pretty awful. Mine fell apart the first time I looked at it; the glue holding it together just let go. So I thought I'd just lose it and make space in the case for something useful. Unfortunately, some idiot at DeWalt had the bright idea of permanently gluing the bulky, space-wasting molded plastic holder into the rails of the case. Gee, since they're little dovetails, if you really wanted to secure something a little sticky goo would work just fine, no need for permanent glue... I tried to pry it out, and succeeded in cracking the little reinforcing rib inside the case for my efforts. That took almost no effort. So I dremeled it out instead, and I'll be gluing something else in its place, since I can't use the dovetail rails anymore. That whole issue irked me, because the case could be modular, customizable and cool if they didn't go and glue in a totally useless accessory...] So minor [or not] quibbles with the case make it a 4-star kit instead of five; not bad at all, because the bits do their jobs well, and that's what matters. The case is far more robust than your average piece of plastic, but it feels like it just might shatter in a million bits if you left it overnight in the truck in winter and then dropped it. Maybe next time it gets really cold I'll drop-test this case and post the results here... [Minor prying shatters the cheap (polystyrene?) brittle plastic when it's warm. I will not bet on the lifespan of this case.] I'll look around for more bit holders that fit the dovetail rails in the case. If I can find some, I can really trick out this case for my specific needs. Hey DeWalt, maybe sell the bit holders to fit this case separately? Until then, it'll do just fine as it is. Solid stuff [more or less] from DeWalt. ... show more

  • This split point is a game changer
Style: 14-Piece Drill Bit Set Pattern Name: Screwdriver Bit Set
No longer will you need to use a center punch to get an accurate hole on difficult materials. I never thought I would be able to start a hole on metals without bit wander but now it is easy. These drill bits are very durable and bore a clean hole without an issue. I have purchased two of these sets- one for my garage and one for my tool bag. These bits drive quickly and leave a nice clean hole even in difficult materials. It holds the bits securely in the case and it's a good size for my tool bag. I would but this set again in a heartbeat. ... show more
