  • Good read
Fascinating. The second in the series and I enjoyed it as much as the first. Kept me wanting to read on. That's all I ask for in a book.

  • Draws you in quickly
Another great read from Tannis Laidlaw. She paints her characters well and they draw you into the web of getting lost in the story quickly. You want to sit and chat with some - you love to hate others! This was an enjoyable read where you’ll continue to get to know Madeline and her life’s dilemmas. I recommend you read it on a lazy day when you don’t have much else needing your attention. I received a free copy of this book and this is my honest opinion of It. ... show more

  • Can Maddie start her life over? Should she become embroiled in this death?
Death at Cherry Tree Manor, a Madeleine Brooks mystery by Tannis Laidlaw is Laidlaw's first attempt at a mystery and it was a success. Not only was it a good mystery but also women's fiction at its best as we accompany Maddie on her journey away from her failed marriage. She is a feeling character, hurt and disillusioned, maybe a little hopeful, that he will change his mind about his young girlfriend and come back to her. Maddie has moved away from London and her job as a probation officer and moved to a small town and become an estate agent (real estate). She is working on her first commission and has three clients, thanks to the man she is replacing who is undergoing chemotherapy. She's not making money yet, but she is meeting people in the community and enjoying her new friends. One of her clients is not ready to list his house yet. Douglas inherited Cherry Tree Manor from his great-aunt Beryl and it took a court order to make it his. That has finally happened but there are a lot of repairs and updating to do. He has to get the money first. His aunt just disappeared. He would also like to know what happened to her. He asked Maddie to help. He is kind of cold, but decent. William is another terrific character. He is an elderly and who isn't convinced he is ready to move yet. Despite that, Maddie and he develop a close friendship. He helps her with stories of the past and his relationship with Beryl. Everyone in town knew he so it wasn't hard to get to know more about her. Beryl had been a piece of work. Everyone said so. Had her dementia progressed to the point that she simply walked into woods and disappeared? Not everyone agreed that the dementia was real. Had she just walked away and was living the high life somewhere? Some thought so. Had she been murdered? Apparently with her personality, that was a possibility. Her neighbors, George and his wife, Tina. Well, Tina, really, wanted to buy the manor, but were not willing to pay a reasonable price. It was all very convoluted. Then there was the vandalism. All very odd, but Maddie hung in until the end. It was a fun book to read. Very informative about life in an English village. I enjoyed it. I recommend it. I received a free ARC of Death at Cherry Tree Manor from Cozy Mystery Review Crew in exchange for a fair and honest review. • Entertaining Debut Mystery
Death at Cherry Tree Manor is the first installment in the Madeleine Brooks Mystery series. The story starts off with the flashback of a criminal act and pulls readers into wanting to know more. Madeleine Brooks, who is known as Maddie to her friends, has relocated from the London suburbs to the countryside of Oxfordshire. Recently, Maddie’s life has taken an unexpected turn, and she is charting a new path. She not only is struggling to get back on track after her husband’s infidelity but also is nervous about starting a new career as a real estate agent. Maddie is tasked with the sale of Cherry Tree Manor, and this assignment pulls her into a mystery surrounding the disappearance of the manor’s owner. The tension builds up slowly as Maddie asks questions about the missing homeowner. Infuriating threats escalate into frightening situations. Will Maddie discover the truth before anyone is harmed? This cozy mystery penned by Tannis Laidlaw blends a small-town unsolved police case, which subsequently leads to private citizens taking on the responsibility of solving the mystery, and a realtor’s job to create an entertaining story. A large amount of the book is devoted to Maddie’s career change as a newbie real estate agent and what it entails to prepare and sell a house. However, Maddie’s struggle to come to terms with her marital woes is also part of the storyline. Detailed descriptions bring the setting alive in the readers’ minds, and the characters and events are realistically portrayed in the story. Laidlaw has done a good job with her debut novel, and I look forward to future installments. ... show more

  • Entertaining read
The first half of the book told of Madeleine’s transition from city life to country life - a new job and newly being single - with just hints of the mystery to come. The second half was full of surprises and suspense as Madeleine solves the mystery. This was an enjoyable read with entertaining characters. ... show more

  • Page Turner
The protagonist, Madeline (Maddie) recently changed careers, stemming from a large life change. Once a probations officer, now Maddie finds herself staging homes for resale. Eager to jump into the market, she is tasked with staging and reselling “Cherry Tree Manor”. She learns of the disappearance of the elderly homeowner and the mystery deepens. I really enjoyed how Tannis Laidlaw set the scene - it’s an Anglophile’s dream. There were many quaint, English references to enjoy which made me appreciate the book even more. I thought the book started a little darker than most cozy mysteries. In fact, it felt a little Shirley Jackson/Agatha Christie-ish, which I thought was an excellent take on the mystery theme. A point of annoyance to me was how we were constantly reminded that Maddie was a prior PO. It seemed like a reference was made nearly every other page. I understand that part of Maddie’s story was the transition she was making from that line of work but I simply found it annoying to have it mentioned so frequently. I think the average reader would be able to read between the lines. Overall, I thought it was a very enjoyable read and it definitely was a page turner. Thanks to Cozy Review Crew for a copy of the book. This review is my own opinion. ... show more
