This laser engraving machine is a bit heavy and takes up a lot of space; I can only use it on my garage workbench. However, I am pleasantly surprised by its engraving quality. With its 72W high-precision laser cutter, it can engrave text and images on metal, glass, and wood surfaces. I've had a long-standing idea of engraving my name on my stainless steel thermos, and this laser engraver makes it possible. The installation took me nearly an hour, not overly complicated, but I needed to ensure precision and stability. It has high engraving accuracy, and its laser beam is very powerful, so I have to use it with great care. After engraving, there's a bit of residual warmth on the surface of my stainless steel thermos. I rinse it with water, wipe it dry, and my name appears clearly, just like a factory-made product. This is a great start up laser and graver kit for beginners. You basically get everything you need. Download the software and do yourself a fever and research some videos on this brand and product online before using it for good tit's great at cutting burning or shading. The media could not be loaded. On opening the package I found that the product had been very carefully packed with custom foam protection and everything was in great shape. I did find that the printed assembly guide was hard to both read and follow with tiny print and necessary details just kind of skipped over, but they do include a memory card pre-loaded with both the manual and a video showing the assembly process which greatly clarified the process. Once I understood how it went together assembly was pretty quick and straightforward and everything aligned well. Prior to going into how it operated, I think it’s worth highlighting that this unit does have some highly recommended accessories you will need to purchase separately in order to really make effective use of it. First off is a cutting surface (usually a metal honeycomb) and a metal backing plate to protect your workbench as well as help to avoid materials like metal from heating up and warping during the process. In theory you can use the tool without either of these, but the tool really does seem to be designed to use them and the manufacturer specifically calls them out as items to get. Next is some way to deal with the smoke and fumes; laser etching / cutting is essentially very controlled burning of the material and so there will be smoke and fumes to deal with ranging from basic wood smoke if cutting natural wood to nastier fumes if cutting plastics or other chemically based materials... not really something you want to have in your house. There are several options for these including some made by the same manufacturer. You’ll also want to have a fire extinguisher handy as it’s not common but sometimes it’s possible for the material being etched / cut can catch fire. Finally, while it does come with 1 set of laser safety glasses it’s probably worth getting another set in case someone else is around when using the laser, particularly if you opt to go without an enclosure. All said, just be aware that while you _can_ use the machine out of the box without anything else it’s not entirely recommended, even by the manufacturer. In addition, you’ll need a computer running suitable software to create the .gcode files which drive the laser. The same memory card that has the instructions on it also has copies of 2 compatible software tools on it, one is free and the other is a 30 day trial. While the computer can connect to the tool via USB, it is also possible to run the tool from files generated on the computer and put onto a memory card (like the one that comes included with the tool), which works well if the computer is not located near the tool but does have some drawbacks. The biggest of these is that there is no way to choose the file to run on the tool itself; it simply takes the most recent file and runs it which could be an issue if you’re doing a multi-stage process or batch jobs. The other issue is that it’s an “all or nothing” approach so if you’re trying to dial in the machine to the material you don’t really have the ability to do test cuts from the file without doing the entire thing. All that said, to make sure everything is set up properly the tool comes with a couple of test files and some material to use for them, and by moving the files around on the memory card you pick which one you want to use and then go run it on the machine. Assuming everything is correct you’ve run your first etching / cut. From that point you’ll need to get up to speed using the software of your choice for more advanced usage. During my test cuts without the enclosure on and using the included very thin plywood, I was pleasantly surprised by how quiet and apparently smoke free it was while engraving… but once it shifted to cutting mode there was quite a bit of smoke coming out of it. ... show more

It was fairly easy to assemble (took about 20 minutes), the pictures helped a lot. Works great, very fine detail. It was surprisingly fast. Note - use the eye protection (included).
