I’m a retired nurse practitioner and act as the on-site medical help during our volunteer beach clean-ups at Padre Island National Seashore. Some of these clean-ups happen in pretty remote spots—30 miles from a cell signal and even farther from the nearest ER—so I like to be prepared. I picked up this dissection kit to keep in our medical pack, and it’s been a great addition. So far, I’ve used it to remove fish hooks, shards of glass, splinters, and once even a hearing aid that got wedged deep in a woman’s ear canal. The tools are well-organized and cover most basic needs you'd encounter in a first aid scenario. That said, I knocked off one star because the finish on the instruments isn’t quite what I remember from clinical settings. The forceps, in particular, grab a little less tightly than I’d like and aren’t as smooth in hand. But for being out on the sand, miles from help, this set has earned its keep. It’s not surgical suite quality, but it’s handled a fair share of unexpected problems and helped quite a few folks go home in better shape than they would have without it.
