  • Awesome tool!
Set name: Color Muse 3
We have a small painting business and color matching used to mean getting out several fan decks to try and find the best match. This little gem does it with an app and seems to do it with an amazing level of accuracy. It was easy to download and install the app. You don't have to give any personal information if you don't want to but if you want it to remember your matches, you have to play ball. Sampling colors from a number of areas is always a good idea, but we have found that this device pretty much nails the color and sheen as long as the sample area is clean. This is saving us a ton of paint on touch ups and blends. We can now confidently make a repair without having to run out entire walls or ceilings. We have had basically 100% success with this on probably 50 different colors so far. For the price, this is completely worth it. Basically the cost of 2 or 3 gallons of premium paint, if you get one mistint because you didn't guess right, this thing pays for itself. Supposedly, the company has partnered with Sherwin-Williams. There are versions of this device that have been branded for Sherwin-Williams and are pre loaded with the Sherwin Williams ENTIRE color palette. From what I have heard, they will be available from Sherwin-Williams for about $30 more than you can find them on Amazon. Not sure if it will be worth it, as the standard palette of Sherwin-Williams colors already on the app seems to do just fine. If I had to guess, ColorMuse will probably try and partner with all the big brands and do the same. If you are a painter or designer, you need one of these. Super handy. ... show more

  • Good, but did not work as expected...
Set name: Color Muse
This is a good tool that was helpful in matching exterior paint. As others have noted, it will measure the color of paint and provide you with various numbers that are mostly helpful. As an initial test, it did a good job of correctly matching standard interior paint colors that we already knew what the color was. So far so good, but that was not what followed... Next up was matching exterior paint. This is truly a challenge as each exterior wall gets a slightly different amount of sun and, thus, fades at a different rate. Unfortunately, there were no removable parts on the exterior of our house that matched the fade level of a small area that needed touch up. Hence the need for the Color Muse. After making a half dozen or so measurements--each area of knock-down textured stucco gave a slightly different reading--I was off to the paint store. I was shocked to find that paint stores are not able to take the raw data from the Color Muse and do an exact match. Rather, they are only able to take one of the app's recommended "near match" colors as starting point. It took two trips to the paint store and about 2 hours of a very patient employee's time tweaking and tuning to get a good match. The process is tedious. We started with the closest match, then ran a quart, painted a small area, then used the Color Muse app's inspect function to compare a sample to the readings from my exterior wall. The app does a decent job of indicating how good the match is, but take this number with a grain of salt. Next, the paint store employee would take his best guess as to which of the four tints in his system would best tweak the color and run another sample, paint an area, let it dry (used a heat gun to speed it up), than back to the Color Muse app to compare. Since I had several readings from my exterior wall, we dinked around with the formulation until the delta E was between 1.0 and 1.3 compared to all of my readings. The match ended up being quite good. Not perfect and not as good as some interior matches I have done with pieces of trim and painted drywall using the paint store's color measuring equipment, but it was much better than I feared once I comprehended the inherent limitations of this tool. If you have interior paint that you want to match, you are better off taking a small piece of drywall or trim to the paint store to get a match. The paint store's spectrophotometer will give you a much better match in only one or two attempts as the paint store's equipment will give an precise formulation even it is not one of the standard colors sold at the store thereby avoiding the Color Muse paint tweaking guessing game. ... show more

  • Exceeded expectations
Set name: Color Muse 3
My house was last repainted 20+ years ago with PPG paints and I recorded some of the paint colors being used, but not all of them. The living room walls were also a custom color recommended by the paint shop and it was just called "Jim's Beige". I need to redo some walls that have been chipped or damaged, and I don't want to do the entire space (it's very large). In addition, PPG is no longer available within reasonable driving distance, whereas I can find Benjamin Moore at many local stores. So, I decided to try the Color Muse 3 to help with finding proper matches to the paint colors I had not recorded. Wow! This thing is amazing. As test cases, I scanned the rooms with known paint colors and surprisingly, despite aging for this long, the Color Muse 3 identified the correct color as a "Good Match". For some rooms, it did find alternatives that were "Excellent Match", and they do appear lighter which would be expected with fading after 20 years. So, this gives me a good feeling to try those "Excellent Match" colors if I need touch up areas before I commit to painting the entire wall or room. For the living room, I now have standard color options from Benjamin Moore rather than a custom PPG color. One thing that is still questionable is the sheen identification. I just recently painted a reach-in closet using Benjamin Moore Semi-Gloss. The Color Muse 3 did identify the correct color as "Excellent Match", but it identified the sheen as Satin. This was on paint that is less than two weeks old, so I did expect it to identify the sheen correctly. Still, I can deal with this since matching color is more important in my mind than getting the sheen correct. However, I did choose the Color Muse 3 over the Color Muse for the sheen identification and higher pixel resolution, and I'm not sure the added cost is really worth it. ... show more

  • Not accurate
Set name: Color Muse
I had high hopes for this tool. Unfortunately, it didnt meet my expectations. It showed me three matching colors that were much lighter than the wall color I needed. Good thing I only bought sample sizes. But still, I wasted $25 dollars for the wrong color.

  • Great Idea...Execution Needs Work
Set name: Color Muse
On Android it's completely hit or miss whether the blue tooth connection is successful. Sometimes it connects on the first try, other times it takes 5-6 retries and/or resetting the device to get it to connect. This type of glitch would acceptable if I were a beta tester for a kick start project or something, but this is a "finished" device released to market. Unacceptable. As far as the color matching, it is OK...tried to match an original Sherwin Williams paint to the closest Behr because Home Depot is very close, and the resulting Behr best match was a few shades too light, enough to notice the touched up area. So I rescanned with the device and am going to back to try a darker shade. In the end I wonder if using this device ends up saving more time or effort than simply bringing home a manufacturers color sheet and comparing or simply taking a swag (super wild a** guess). Update 5/19/2017: After my fourth paint sample that was noticeably off based on the closest match recommendations of the device/app, I broke down and am hiring a pro painter to come in, take samples to get matches, and perform the touch up repairs. However I am keeping the device because I see several potential uses for it...unfortunately paint matching for the purpose of spot/touch-up is not one of them. Recommendations for a future firmware and/or app update: - Maintain bluetooth connection and do not require the users to re-connect/re-calibrate every time the app is opened. This gets very old and annoying very fast. - If a target paint manufacturer/code is known, allow a user to look it up and find closest matches from other manufacturers without having to scan with the device. For example if I know I am looking for Frazee Swiss Coffee 487 I punch that into your engine and get closest match results without having to scan. ... show more

  • Great for dye matching
Set name: Color Muse
From an admitted tool junkie: I can't believe how handy and easy to use this little tool is! I've been using it for several months for everything from matching existing wall paint to matching color samples for CMYK fiber dye formulas and it's incredibility close every time. I even tested it on wall paint that I applied 2 years ago and it came up with the perfect match! It was also helpful to match the paint in a couple of rooms in a house we purchased. The colors were great but the paint condition wasn't so it was easy to match and repaint without a huge investment of expensive color samples. It has features in the app that I will never use and a couple that I ended up using. For example, my daughter has a favorite green shirt that she loves and it seriously needs replacing. The color isn't trendy anymore but the clothing match app came up with lots of suggestions. You do need to play with the key words (shirt, top, tshirt) to get the most appropriate matches. I dye knitting yarn with acid dyes and a CMYK method. Sometimes a color in a magazine or fabric will catch my eye and I have to have it. This tool will get you very close. There is still some artists discretion in fine tuning but you will be in the ballpark to begin with! Just be aware of texture or shine on fabric. The 'eye' can't shut out all of the light and they will be close matches but not exact. I have the most trouble with with trims for home dec. They are difficult to read. How have I lived this long without it??? I would buy it again if needed. ... show more

  • Nice upgrade from Nix2
Set name: Color Muse 3 with Case
I bought the Nix2 many years ago and that really was a great product but I was not able to reconnect on latest attempt using. Thought I would give the Muse3 a shot as this one also tests sheen. Well, right out of the gate this did a great job in matching the exterior house color. It was not real clear in description but the app does include a bunch of free paint libraries that it looks for closest matches in. For me the main ones I am using are Behr, Valspar, Sherwin Williams, and Benjamin Moore but there are plenty of others. Just check the ones available near you when you set up app. The app and device are pretty simple to use and such a great tool to have around. As others recommend test a few different spots and find the best match that comes in first most often. Also do not trust the color shown on your phone as really hard to compare that way. It beats trying to get a sample from an old rusted fan of paint. I would highly recommend! ... show more
