  • The Ghost of a trio
Having paid out over $30 for this pair of DVDs, I can only counsel prospective buyers to be less trusting than I. They should ignore the overly flattering 5-star ratings given by four reviewers, who seem to be living more on memory than on what is actually offered for present consumption. I, too, have heard this great trio in the flesh, and I am proud to own several of their vinyl recordings. What these DVDs present is the impression you would have received listening to a cylindrical hand-operated phonographic recording 80 years ago. Quite simply, the recorded sound is as bad as that. I want to point this out as a trend indulged by His Master's Voice successors, EMI, in their economic death throes, of issuing DVD recordings that would better have been consigned to the scrap-heap, since their effect is to diminish the reputation of some of the greatest artists of our century in the minds of those who have not heard them in any other format. In this endeavour, they are aided and abetted by persons such as the 4 previous reviewers, whose justifiable admiration for past achievements trumps their critical judgment of this badly recorded product. One thing I will say: I myself derived pleasure as well as frustration from the experience. By extrapolation, I could appreciate the exquisite artistry of these three gifted musicians, and their wonderful co-ordination as a team. In fact, I have never heard better performances of these or any other trios by any other group where I was able to make a direct comparison under satisfactory sound conditions. But here, these conditions simply do not prevail. We are listening to not one but three Ghosts even though we can see them perfectly on our screens. Those who own other recordings of these works by the present team should leave it at that. You will be able to enjoy them under far superior sound conditions. Not only is the sound fuzzy and amorphous, there is also annoying background hum that the engineers seem to have made no attempt to remove. The one advantage you will have is the sight of them actually playing. Most prominence is given to Istomin, and least to Stern, but for all three the camera work gives an excellent idea of their individual styles and techniques, as well as their emotional approach to the music. Their intuitive sense of what their other two partners are up to is also remarkably well displayed. One unavoidable complaint is that the first three trios make up the composer's Opus 1, and are followed by his Opus 10 to complete the first disc. All except the last have the complexity of 1st Year Conservatory exercises, and yet they are played with a reverence and respect that raises them close to the level of the Op 18 String Quartets despite their compositional shortcomings. The two great trios (Ghost and Archduke) are on the 2nd disc. This imbalance gets the listener off on a bad footing if he sticks with the chronological order. In summary, this is a flawed reproduction of outstanding performances that are way overpriced, but if you want to throw your money away, there are some impressive compensations on offer. ... show more

  • The only game in town, and it's good!
Beethoven's "Archduke" piano trio is very likely the greatest work of chamber music ever written, so it's a little surprising that no one seems to have recorded it on DVD. This set of recordings of Beethoven's piano trios 1 through 7 dates from 1970, way before the digital era, so it is not up to today's high standards. Still, the video quality and the sound are quite acceptable. And the performance is exceptional, with three top-notch artists, used to working with each other, offering a well-thought-out performance that is a treat to watch. My favorite recorded performances of the "Archduke" are the vintage ones by Cortot, Thibaud, and Casals and by the Suk Trio. This performance comes close to that standard, with some slower tempos being the most noticeable difference. I look forward to repeated viewings of the "Archduke" and to getting acquainted with the other Beethoven piano trios in this set. ... show more

  • Buy these Beethoven piano trios
Those of you who have already seen the EMI Classics DVD of the Brahms piano trios as performed by Stern, Rose, and Istomin, will not need any extra encouragement to purchase the Beethoven piano trios performed by these same musicians. The only negative is that two of the seven trios have been filmed in black and white, and the distance shots in b&w are not well focused. But I could not detect any sound problems with the two b&w trios. The other five trios, which have been filmed in sharp color, are perfect. Of course the playing is wonderful (as a cellist, I will confess to a special liking for the playing of Leonard Rose). So there is no excuse for not purchasing this 2-DVD set of the Beethoven piano trios (although I will admit to a slight preference for the Brahms trios). ... show more

  • A dream trio.
I regret not having seen this trio more often as a student in New York in the early 1970's. I had the pleasure of hearing them in the Brahms trios at Carnegie Hall but my love of chamber music developed slowly. Their Brahms is also on DVD and should not be missed. I love the Beethoven piano trios and this set is a wonderful way to experience them. The video experience is important in chamber music because it allows you to fully appreciate the ensemble playing. This set is a document of the genius of Beethoven and the efforts of these three wonderful musicians. Listen without distraction in the quiet of your home. The first three trios are gems.Do not skip them. ... show more

  • As good as it gets
You really can't go wrong here -- more than three hours of beethoven, beautifully played, for less than $20 (if you don't buy from amazon). As another reviewer pointed out, two of the seven trios are in black and white but the later ones are in color and very good sound -- these are real musicians -- nothing showy but an honest rendering of the music. Can anything be better than the Archduke trio ?? ... show more

  • Beethoven Piano Trios: Istomin, Stern and Rose Trio
This is an excellent release with some of the finest playing of this music. This is also a wonderful tribute (although one is not made) to Leonard Rose whose playing is simply superb!!
