You have to pull one side away from you, and the other side towards you a little before you separate it...common sense....how else would it stay closed? I always didn't buy this product because of the comments about it not being able to open, but these are amazing. Some of them are tighter than others, but once opened one time it isn't as tight anymore, and even then it takes much less strength than opening a coke can..a toddler could do it. I bought the .50 inch rings. Some of these were real easy to open, some a little hard to open, and so far 1 has broken when I opened it. These are perfect for the little booklets I have made my child. As you can see in the picture, I used coins to give you a relative size of these rings. For the price, even if a few of these were to break - still worth it to me. The black grid lines are 1 inch squares by the way (just ignore the stains on my work table). I have also bought the 1.5" rings and I'm including a picture of those as well. ... show more

These are perfect for putting together different books, projects, and pages I use to homeschool my son. The colors are very vibrant, and the product works well for the most part. There are only a couple of rings that were either really hard to get open, or too easy to open and wouldn't stay shut. But, out of the entire bunch, I think there were only a couple lemons. These are pretty and useful for color-coding my speech therapy materials. Yes, they can be stiff and dometimes difficult to open, but they NEVER come open when I don't want them too, and that's saying something.

I’m not sure if I got a dud pack? But all of the green do not close and are super loose to open. 5 of 10 pink will not open. I’m nervous to even attempt to use on my kinders flash cards as they feel like they break. Disappointed with the product.

I previously trashed these because I could not open them. Damn people how about some instructions. finally found a video (embaraasing) done by a child (of course).Turns out I was trying to open it by separating the pivot point. Did not see the latch opposite. So they are not so bad, raised rating to 3. But still, how about a little drawing for dummies like me. ... show more

    • ~70% of these ½" rings are usable...

... so, if you think of it as a box of 70, rather than 100, then it is still not a bad buy for ~70 ½" rings... ...the primary defect is poor quality control in the hinge/riveting process, as about 30 have a hinge misalignment, such that the locking teeth do not meet to close & lock OR are so tight, you can not open them (by hand)... so, ~30 went into the trash. however, 70 are solid, good quality rings (which look and perform identical and very well) and here are some specific positives; • excellent, well-done, bright nickel plating (for all 100). • firm/tight hinge, with an easy, smooth movement (for ~ 70%). • very strong lock...so, no worries of an opening binder ring (for ~ 70%). again, an ok product, if you think of it as a 70 count box, rather than a 100 count ... as such, a fair deal & pleased with those 70, Thank you. ... show more

    • Colored coating causes ring to be difficult to open

I did read others reviews before purchasing these so I took a risk and lost, I needed them for making small flash cards. The bag comes with 50 rings in 10 colors. These rings are hard to open no matter what others may say ( I do know how to open them I have used other brands that's not the issue) I believe the issue is from the powder coating used to paint these, it appears to get stuck in the area where the pin is. Once you do manage to get them open it is hit or miss if they will even close again properly. Some of them work fine, about half of them, the other half not at all and there's no way to fix them, a let down considering you hope to get just a few that might have an issue. I really can't recommend this specific set with the colors, the plain uncoated ones most likely are fine but not these. ... show more
