My mom's dermatologist recommended this for her very dry skin. I ordered the two-pack to have one for me and my peculiar swimming rash problem. Pool chemicals (plus their reaction to sunlight) leave me with very itchy rashes on my upper arms and legs and the tops of my hands. In addition to all the usual topical anti-itch products plus a pill my doctor prescribed, I tried several after-swim chlorine removal products and soaps. Some of them worked a little; some worked better in various combinations. None of them worked well enough. The itching never really stopped. I was scratching in my sleep. My hands in particular, with their thinner skin, were getting torn apart. I swim every day during the summer: this was excruciating. This Cerave Healing Ointment was expensive but am I glad I tried it! It made a huge difference almost immediately. It looks like a kind of frosty Vaseline, and I suppose in a way that's what it is. The active ingredient is petrolatum, which is basically petroleum jelly. I suppose some of the other stuff they put in helps make it less greasy, because it is not at all greasy like Vaseline. It's a strange consistency, almost hard to scoop out of the jar and even spread over your skin. It doesn't apply thickly (unless you really try). I don't know if any of those other ingredients have anything to do with it's healing effectiveness, but dang! I got immediate itch relief, and within a day my skin was noticeably healing. In about three days the worst area, on one finger, was all but completely healed. I got this product too late in the swim season to try it out as a pre-swim preventative. If I apply it before I get in the pool, will it prevent the chlorine from even affecting me? I'll find out next summer, for sure. This stuff is amazing. I was so happy to find this CeraVe Healing Ointment | 12 Ounce | Cracked Skin Repair Skin Protectant with Petrolatum Ceramides available through Amazon Pantry. I love that this comes with a tamper-proof seal in place. The consistency of this is about like a salve, Vaseline, or Vick's. I have been applying it to my crazily dry feet at night. I can't wear socks to bed, so I put this on and then wear plastic bags LOOSLY over my feet for as long as I can stand to, usually about an hour; sometimes less, sometimes more because I fall asleep with them there. This helps the moisturizing benefit get into my skin and helps me sleep so much better than with my otherwise super dry feet rubbing against the sheets. Seriously, this lovely stuff keeps me sane. I had great success with previous CeraVe products and this proved no exception. In a week, it was healed! My thinking is because it's so thick, it doesn't rub off the way Neosporin will.
