    • LOVE! books about Techniques and Artist.
Most of ceramic books nowadays have too many fillers that can be condensed to few pages, not this one. Each artists, legendary and current, occupy 2 pages each, one page showcasing their art work in high quality pictures and another page showing their background, philosophy and techniques. You don't find many books emphasize on the techniques like this one does. The "techniques" here is not to each of how to wedge clay, make glaze, learn homebuilding or how to throw better, it is how the artists achieve their outstanding artwork. This book is perfect for the readers who already know how to make clay art and want to bring their skill to the next level. I've only read through the first half and have already learned many techniques and have many new ideas to try. It does have few imperfections that does not take away its beautify; first 40 pages are half filler talking giving introduction about ceramics, which just like every other ceramic books, the book also wants to attract coffee table book readers. Another imperfection is the "techniques" are still a bit vague that it is not step by step detailed instructions, but I don't expect all artists, including the ones are no longer with us, to feel comfortable to share their secret sauce, so this is expected. Overall this is a very good book that I constantly go back to get inspired and to review the endless techniques. I read the words it in my studio (garage) for serious inspiration or I can just browse the pictures in my lounge chair for leisure, highly recommend every ceramicists to add this book into their libraries. ... show more

    • A beautiful and exciting book
I want to start by congratulating Louisa Taylor on the completion of a prodigious piece of work. It really is a beautiful book, and educational in many ways. In Ceramics Masterclass Louisa Taylor has brought so much material to the table it is remarkable. Part gallery, part historical survey, part technique workshop, and part inspiration both for artists and art lovers. I wasn't, and in fact, am not sure I can do this work justice because I have not worked with ceramics since I was around 10 years old, but my chosen medium owes much to ceramics (as glass is believed to have been discovered when some glaze ran into the fire as a ceramic vessel was being fired). As one who has done research and written o creativity, and who has had a glimpse of surveys , and tutorilas on glass technique in process, well, I am awed. I feel like I am holding a gallery in my lap. This book can be enjoyed simply for the survey of creative ceramic artists. For those working in the medium it is a real gem as she explores the techniques used in many of the pieces, interviews many of the artists and also provides very practical information on kiln schedules, mixing slip and glazes. She even delves into an area few dare touch, the state of mind, emotional relationship with the material that are part of the process, or even, the technique. Even thought I work in a different medium, and so the techniques are not directly applicable, I am finding this book so inspiring! I can not discuss how comprehensive it is, or representative, though I do not believe it was meant to be either. I can say that it is beuatifully done, provides a brief history of the modern ceramics movement and it's evolution from a material for producing practical objects to fine craft to fine art, and the many shades in between. I get the sense that Ceramics occupies a similar place to glass as an art form, or medium. They are both ancient, yet somehow struggling for recognition as a medium for serious art. This book goes a ways towards furthering that conversation providing a glimpse of some exciting work, contextualizing it, and handing a slew of tools to ceramic artists. I believe this book would be enjoyed by art enthusiasts, artists of many stripes, both students of and artists working with ceramic clays. It is very very well done. ... show more

The ceramics MasterClass book is really helpful for those looking to explore various pottery styles, view other potter’s work, and find new inspiration. The book is broken into multiple sections. The beginning of the book kicks off with the following sections: creative tips and techniques, basic materials, basic tools, and basic techniques. The “meat” of the book, or the largest section, are the examples of various potter’s work. This is broken into sections by style/art category, like: vessel, decorative, function, figurative, conceptual, and installation. This section is roughly 200 pages. Usually, within two pages a new artist is introduced. The artist section will feature a large hero image of a quintessential piece, some background information about the artist, and the way they work or their style. Sometimes it will also go into specifics of how they make their work, or what techniques are used. I reference these pages when I am in need of inspiration, or want to explore styles that are different than what I may naturally default to. It helps me to open up creatively and make new pottery that I otherwise wouldn’t have. The back few pages have some recipes for glaze mixes and slip decoration. The recipes are not comprehensive (meaning there aren’t that many to make the book worth purchasing just for the recipes), but they are a helpful reference. There is also a pyrometric cone chart and a list of additional resources for further reading. Lastly, there is a glossary of a couple-hundred of terms used throughout the book, such as “grog”, “kintsugi”, and “oxide”. From my point of view, the primary benefit of this book (and why one would consider buying it), is the extensive list of artists and photographs of their work and explanation of how they achieve their style. It is a wonderful source of inspiration, and another way to explore possibilities within clay work that you may not otherwise have thought of or even known was possible. ... show more
