Celestron’s StarSense Explorer software in your phone uses sky recognition technology (“plate solving”) by analyzing star patterns overhead to pinpoint your telescope’s position. You dock your phone, launch the StarSense Explorer app, and then follow the on-screen arrows to locate stars, planets, nebulae, star clusters and some brighter galaxies. The telescope uses your phone's camera and plate-solving technology to analyze the night sky, which only takes a minute or so provided you have clear dark views. Then it can point you exactly to the location of planets, nebulae, and galaxies using on-screen arrows. These are easy to locate, by manually swinging around the telescope. You follow the on-screen arrows to your target, when the bullseye turns green, you can view it through the eyepiece. The app can also generate a detailed list of the top objects to see (Moon, Jupiter, Saturn, Vega, Hercule cluster etc.) based on your time and location, which it automatically reads from the phone. Mechanically the scope features a manual alt-azimuth mount, with altitude slow motion adjustment with a threaded sliding rod. The Al-Az mount is intentionally very light weight, nicely made from aluminum. The whole complete scope only weighs 10.4 lbs, which makes it very easy to carry ! Indeed due to its light weight, the alt-azimuth mount can be a bit shaky, so you should take your time to achieve focus. Nevertheless, you only need to do it once for a chosen eyepiece, and you can point the scope for that anywhere you like. My focuser was a bit stiff at first, so I loosened the two screws underneath a bit, maybe each half a turn. This helps reduce the shake a bit when you turn the focuser wheel. I have found that optically the 114mm (4.5") Newtonian reflector delivers sharp views of the Moon, larger planets like Jupiter and Saturn, and brighter deep-sky subjects such as the Orion Nebula and Andromeda Galaxy. The latter are of course, like many astronomy targets, best viewed from a dark location with limited light pollution. But one great aspect of this scope is its light weight and sturdy construction, which makes it extremely portable. The telescope is a Newtonian design with large light gathering aperture, with a front secondary mirror and a spherical high reflectivity primary mirror. To make the optical tube shorter (61 cm) and lightweight, the focuser contains a corrector lens which brings the focal length to a good 1000mm, and also corrects for coma. The resulting Bird-Jones design is meaningful here, since it allows for a significantly physically shorter and lighter telescope. Similar corrector lenses are routinely used in Celestron’s high end telescopes such as the Edge HD series and are nothing new. Like any optical glass component or eyepiece, these can give some minor chromatic aberrations, but here the whole system works extremely well, given the modest overall cost of the telescope. My 114mm LT AZ came perfectly collimated out of the Amazon box, and this is presumably due that (1) Celestron takes the time to perfectly collimate the thing at the factory on an optical bench, (2) the secondary and primary mirror mounts and screws are solid well designed and sturdy, and (3) the scope is triple boxed with nice thick cardboard OTA holder pieces to prevent to scope from getting wacked out of collimation (unless you throw it down the stairs yourself). It is sometimes claimed that aligning the two mirrors (aka collimation) on a Bird-Jones scope can be more complex than on standard Newtonian reflectors, because of the spherical aberration corrector lens. I have found this not to be the case here, I did a laser collimation check with no issues and without removing the corrector lens. Corrector lenses for spherical mirrors are nothing new and can be found in most high end Celestron telescopes, such as the Edge HD line which I own. Also, the scope here has very nicely made collimation screws on the secondary front mirror (three hex and one central screw) and six large collimation screws (three adjustment knobs and three locking screws) on the rear primary mirror. Anyhow, I did check the collimation of the 114 LT AZ out of the box, four ways (a) by looking through the focuser tube to look a the mirror reflection, (b) by using an Astromania short Cheshire eyepiece, (c) by using an SVbony laser collimator and (d) by doing a star test on Vega with an out of focus Airy disk, and concluded that my scope was perfectly collimated at the factory (or at least better than anything I could do short term). The images showed below confirmed that. All in all, it is my judgment that the optical quality on this scope is excellent, especially in view of the very contained upfront cost. I tried all three eyepieces that come with the scope, the 25mm Kellner, the 10mm Kellner and the cheap plastic 2x Barlow. The quality is not the greatest, and I have been using an SVbony 25mm eyepiece ($21) instead, and a Celestron Omni 2x Barlow ($29). I have found that those two items significantly improved my viewing, which shows that the optical quality of the scope is excellent and the eyepieces are a bit on the cheap side. It does indeed make sense for Celestron to deliver a high-quality telescope and mount with an amazing app, and at the same keep the overall price down by only including some very basic eyepieces. The customer later can go out and get a whole repertoire of favorite eyepieces, for whatever viewing subjects he prefers. I’ve also hooked up an SVbony SV205 color camera to the focuser, but have not gotten around yet to take some nice pictures out of it, we shall see. When I get some hopefully decent images, I will post them here. Another alternative is to try out a phone mount which grabs the focuser (the SVbony one on Amazon is $10), and take some pictures with it. Of course you might need your friend’s phone for that, since you want your own phone to stay put in the StarSense cradle. Is this scope for young kids, say under the age of 12 or so? Probably not, unless an adult helps them out with patience in setting up the scope. The scope needs to be assembled properly which is easy, the phone app needs to be installed which is also easy, then the phone (camera) needs to be properly aligned in the cradle using the two bottom screws otherwise it can’t see the night sky, next the red dot finder needs to be aligned with the scope via two black plastic screws, and finally the app (phone) view needs to be aligned as well with the physical scope. Unless all these steps are executed properly (which requires some time and patience) the full power of the scope will not be appreciated, and the whole exercise might result in some initial frustration. Nevertheless, in my opinion this is an amazing design, five stars for optics quality, five stars for portability and ease of use, and another five stars for the StarSense app functionality! Really happy with this telescope. We’ve taken it out to Joshua Tree a few times and the views are very clear. You can see so much more once you get away from all the city lights. My son absolutely loves it and gets excited everytime we take it out. The StarSense feature makes finding things in the sky alot easier too. Took a little bit to get used to everything at first but once we did it was great. Really fun telescope and something we can enjoy together. Definetly recommend it.

Was expecting better had a hard time figuring it out and the app kept freezing so it wouldn’t alone with the sky making it hard to see anything. Overall it’s a good telescope I probably didn’t k ow how to use it correctly since ima beginner but the app needs to be update or fixed

I got this as a gift for a kid and after setting it up which took about 15 minutes, we downloaded a star app and got to pointing. It took a little trial and error but the images are clear and it doesn’t move once you position it. It’s easy enough to pick up and move it, I’d say it’s about 20lbs maybe. Love it!

I ordered this Celestron telescope October 26, 2023; it was delivered October 30, 2023. This telescope arrived in a well padded and packaged set of two sturdy boxes (one inside the other) and within the estimated shipping dates. I give this product a one star for the following reasons: (1) The telescope was impossible to calibrate and focus. The hand-focus apparatus was not precise; the slightest movement caused the optical tube to move away from the target object and lose focus. I could never focus on one single terrestrial object (let alone any celestial object). (2) It did not come with a prism eye piece that corrects the up/down and left/right perspective. So, that had to be purchased separately and was hard to find for this particular telescope model. (3) The phone attachment piece and the app that was supposed to enable the automatic features of the telescope didn't work, even after several calls to Celestron Customer Support. (4) The multiple codes, which the Customer Support gave me over the phone, were supposed to activate the app, but none of the codes worked. (5) The app could only be downloaded to a desktop computer and not to my smart phone. (6) I was never able to use the phone camera to take pictures of terrestrial or celestial objects. (7) I called the Celestron Customer Support multiple times to help me set up the telescope and app, all to no avail. The Celestron customer support acted as if I was taking up too much of their time and came across as impatient and wanting to get me off the phone as soon as possible. (8) I am a seasoned telescope user and I own a wonderful Meade Refractor telescope that I have practically rebuilt with new parts. So I know something about telescopes. I'm not a novice or an idiot. Nevertheless, I kept trying to set up the Celestron telescope to work properly, and finally decided to return it just before the return period ended. I cannot convey how frustrating this experience was, which is one of the reasons why I waited so long before giving a product review; I wanted to communicate from a fact-based perspective rather than from only frustration. Considering the cost for this Celestron telescope, in my opinion, it was truly a piece of junk and I will never buy another Celestron product again.

Claims of being a good first telescope i disagree with them. Where to begin? I bought the telescope based on some the reviews and the feature using the phone app to help view different celestial bodies. I also wanted something that was more compact. And instead of having to look from the end of the barrel, I could look from the side of the barrel. I found the packaging to be sufficient to protect it and it came in good shape. Putting the telescope together was very easy, and I had no problems. Some of the flaws that I ran into that made me give this a less than stellar rating, start with the adjustments and the tightening of certain screws. The lock screw that helps tighten the telescope and prevent it from revolving, where it connects to the tripod. As soon as you attempt to tighten it a little bit, it automatically forces the telescope to shift just a little bit, but takes it off of the celestial body you happen to be viewing. This was very frustrating because I was trying to keep it from shifting, as I was looking through the eyepiece. The other 2 features causing me great frustration in trying to be able to locate any celestial body. The star sense app does not give an accurate view or assistance in locating the celestial body you're hoping to find. I attempted multiple times to adjust The Star sense locator, but to no avail. The other thing I found was every time I mount and unmount the cell phone into the star sense, locator device, it forces it out of alignment immediately. There's a red dot locator also mounted on the telescope. I've had no luck in trying to adjust the red dot into any manner where it will help me. Pinpoint the celestial body that I'm hoping to view. It has become a waste of time for me to use that at all. In order to locate anything, it has to be of a larger celestial body. Like the moon so far, that's been the only celestial body that I've been able to identify and to locate it, I've had to actually use the eye peace viewing tube without the magnifying eyepiece in place. I will compliment that the construction of the telescope and tripod and all feel of a good quality and sturdy and for the price. It was not bad based on pricing of other telescopes out there of this same design. Once I was able to focus on the moon, I found the image to be clear. At this moment, I'm indecisive if I want to keep it or send it back. I'm leaning towards sending it back because of the frustrations that i've had trying to locate celeste body's using what was supposed to be an easy design feature with the star sense app.
